Joubert to ref final

Joubert to ref final

South Africa’s Craig Joubert will referee Sunday’s World Cup final between the All Blacks and France.

Joubert, who took charge of the New Zealand versus Australia semi-final, becomes only the second South African to take charge of the grand final after Andre Watson, who has enjoyed the responsibility on two occasions. The appointment was made by the IRB’s Match Official Selection Committee in Auckland on Monday following a thorough review of performances during the knock-out phase.

Joubert will be joined by Alain Rolland (Ireland) and Nigel Owens (Wales) as assistant referees and Giulio De Santis (Italy) as Television Match Official.

Meanwhile, Wayne Barnes will take charge of the Bronze Final between Australia and Wales on Friday. The Englishman will be supported by assistant referees Romain Poite (France) and George Clancy (Ireland) with Shaun Veldsman (South Africa) as Television Match Official.

IRB Referee Manager Paddy O’Brien said: ‘The IRB Match Official Selection Committee was delighted with Craig and Alain’s performances in the semi-finals. Alain will perform the reserve referee role should he be required.

‘We may be nearing the conclusion of what has been a truly superb Rugby World Cup, but our focus remains firmly on consistency, penalising the clear and the obvious and tackling the ‘big five’ areas.

‘Collectively we continue to work together as a unit and maintain a zero tolerance attitude towards infringements and foul play across the key areas of the game. In that regard, I would also like to thank the coaches for their buy-in to the process during this tournament.’

Joubert said: ‘It is an enormous honour to get the final and I would like to thank Paddy and the Committee for giving me the opportunity. The whole team has performed superbly, assisted each other and bonded over the course of the last six weeks and I would like to thank them for their support and best wishes. I am now really looking forward to getting out there and enjoying the occasion.’

Moaning ?? can you read ?? , I could not give a continental of what happens between Aussies and AB’s??? I was asking for clarity on the rules and yes I believe Craig was harsher on the Aussies in this aspect of the game.

All the AB’s have to do is put on a german accent, drink the frenchies wine and shag their women. The frogs will surrender in seconds and hope that the poms will pop over and bail them out the **** yet again.

@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-52: that should be included under ‘All Blacks’ poephol!

Shall we go on stats? Particularly WC, seeing that’s what the topic is? Boks have won 2 out of 5. NZ maybe 2 out of 7. Up 2-1 vs half-Aussies. Only time when AB’s won WC was without Boks. NZ can only win WCups when hosting them. NZ have never beaten Boks in WC and then going on and winning it. Boks have never blamed being poisoned with food by a mysterious woman on losing a WC ;(

yeah lets talk stats, grow up man.
Only stat you have is RWC, nothing else, its a stat that happens once every 4 years in a 6 week period. Well done but you are being left behind.
Most the guys on here would like to actually start winning more 3 nations and grand slams.
Thats where you get the tag as the best in the world. Thats where you get feared as a team.
Like the old school Boks. Every game was to win, not a 4 year tournament and lose the next 3 years.

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-63: why do you assume I am a Bok supporter or South African? Also my stats-post was actuallly tongue-in-cheek you humourless jerk. Read it again.

Who in the world (except on the 7th state of Aus aka NZ) remembers who won the TriNations in 2003? How many people know who won the WC that year? Same for 99 and 07. Sorry to say. Most people don’t even know what a Grand Slam is or when they happen….

  • 67.Rugbyprof: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-63: do you have such an obsession about the Boks that you automatically assume that anyone who critisize NZ or ABs are naturally a Saffa? Wake up dude!

    @Rugbyprof(rugbyprof)-66:
So going on that, dont bother winning as no one remembers.
Sorry i would rather do it the way the ABs have been doing it lately.
So who won the 6 nations 1999? How won the game in 2005 against Wales and France?
Sorry but if you want to only win things that people remember then so be it.
You will find whatever team you support further down the ranking than you really want to be.

  • 69.Rugbyprof: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-63: even though the ABs are respected and feared in the rugby world, and even those SA Cape people support them & the Saders vs their own, doesn’t mean everyone wants to wear the black jersey and perform moves before the game when they grow up.

I am at such peace this morning. Ab’s were wonderful yesterday morning. Cleverly making Pocock the one to make the tackles knowing that Samo and Elsom would not pose a poaching threat. Nicely done. Israel Dagg. OMG Fantastic! Cruden, nice stuff. Showed no fear and did a bit of magic too. Richie, a giant as always. Jerome Kaino, my personal WC hero.

Now for the final, and a tough one it will be. I cannot believe that the French won’t want to give it their all, considering the main prize is at stake. Also, the last team to beat the blacks at Eden Park are the Frenchies, so you just cannot discount them.

GH and McCaw have lost to this crowd before and they will not take them lightly. I just feel like this world cup is exorcizing all past demons in one 7 week period, and a tough period it has been as this Ab’s team has had many adversities this year. One more game boys, and you’ll be there.

Sorry for missing the little wink.

The AB’s will win it and the dry spell will be broken but what won’t change is this. This has most likely been the poorest WC in years, not because of NZRU, or the NZ public or because of the AB’s but rather because of the the IRB, Samoa (one player), and the IRB officials. Too many games made headlines because of the ref’s poor decisions and that has left us with three knock out games featuring unworthy teams.

All Blacks gonna win it, but it is a hollow experience for the neutrals.

  • 73.Helen: Reply to this comment

Based on performance, the most fair final would have been:

    NZ vs SA
    or
    NZ vs Wales

My world ranking after world cup would look like this:

    NZ
    SA
    WAL
    Aus
    Ire
    Fra
    Arg
    Eng
    Scot
    Sam

  • 74.rossoneri: Reply to this comment

@Rugbyprof(rugbyprof)-67: It’s a fair assumption as you are defending the Boks so ferociously. Don’t worry. I know it still hurts.

  • 75.Rugbyprof: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-68: that’s a stupid statement. We were talking about tournaments not individual games. But if you want to swell there : everyone knows who won the game in 99 between NZ and Fra, and SA vs NZ in 95 (heck, they even made a movie about it! ;) )

Also don’t assume if I’m not a Saffa and say nasties about ABs then I HAVE to be from the northern hemisphere…

Eureka !! I’ve got it ! Why don’t we just do without refs completely ?? We don’t need “assistants” or “TV” officials either……..just programme the rules into a PC and let technology do da bizniss, yeah !! Even better…..why worry with opposition ?? Each team can just play with themselves (…ahem….) or against da computer. Imagine that…..no bitching about the opposition, the refs, “Suzie” the dragon, Pocock, McCaw, Brussouw or anybody else. Hell, what would all of you morons spend your days whinging and whining about then ?? The mind boggles……

People can moan about the refs the standard of officials etc, but one thing is for sure – the best team in our side of the draw is in the final and I will be supporting them to keep the southern hemisphere flag fying high. A pity one of the weaker teams is in the final. That said the AB’s would have won no matter who were they were going to play.

The team that wins consistently surely deserves the tag of World Champions as well.

Not my favourite ref in the world… but… have to put past feelings aside and congratulate Craig Joubert sincerely for a faultless display on the weekend.

You know the ref has done a great job when he’s hardly mentioned and the only mentions I can remember about him were that he had made the right calls, took the right actions and let the game flow.

    So well done Craig.

Just and deserved reward for your fantastic game by being giving the final.

With all the negativity about refs in this world cup… you have made me proud as a South African to be considered and adjudged by the public, players and ref committee alike… to be the best referee at the world cup…

    Good for you!

  • 90.Helen: Reply to this comment

So far, the RWC captains have only been those who have reached legendary status:
    Farr-Jones
    Pienaar
    Eales
    Johnson
    Smitt

I really don’t see the name Dusoutar along these. It will be a crime if Richie’s name is not added to this list.
Also, a shame that Fitpatrick is not on the list.

Just think how this world cup would’ve turned out differently if Hook’s kick was judged to have been over?

That one moment probably changed the course / complexion of this tournament more than any other single event

@Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-85: Bill I’m certain there are the Ab’s haters that would love France to break NZ hearts on Sunday, but in my view I’m with you. It will just be so unfair for a team that lost two matches in this competition already to lift the trophy.

Also, I enjoy the French, but what they did on Saturday was not rugby. It was negative. They played listlessly, and I remember saying to a friend of mine, “Are the French seriously going to just hold out and defend 1 point?” Saturday’s match must have been the worst game of the tournament. It became error ridden with bad decision making from both sides. Stephen Jones is ****, and Yachvilli played like man who didn’t give a ****.

We had the VERY SAME Quarter Finalists for this WC
as we did back in 87 for the inaugural WC.

We also have the very same Finalists.

So much for the South Africans who persist in claiming they would have won in 87.

Richie is a great guy / captain / player.
I would be happy to see him lift the trophy, even if the romantic in me would like to see an upset.

If the kiwis aren’t leading by more than 10 points after 60mins, they’ll choke.
