Currie Cup latest – Peyper, Jonker to ref semis

Currie Cup latest – Peyper, Jonker to ref semis

Keo.co.za brings you news from the Currie Cup.

Peyper, Jonker to ref semis – Jaco Peyper and Marius Jonker will officiate the Currie Cup semi-finals this Saturday.

Peyper will take charge of the WP/Lions clash in Johannesburg and will be partnered by Stuart Berry and Cobus Wessels. Jonker will officiate the Sharks/Cheetahs game in Durban and will have Pro Legoete and Marc van Zyl as his assistants.

Burger escapes suspension – Schalk Burger was cited for a no-arms tackle during WP’s victory over the Pumas last Saturday and was found not guilty at the disciplinary hearing on Monday.

The tackle was made during the second half on Pumas lock JP Mostert. Burger was not given a ban at his hearing, making him available for selection for WP’s semi-final encounter against the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

It’s been reported that there was a complaint from Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse, who used it as an example of how referees ‘favour the strong over the weak’.

Elstadt set for early return – Lock Rynhardt Elstadt could make surprise return in WP’s semi-final clash against the Lions this Saturday.

The 21-year-old suffered a serious knee injury during the Super Rugby semi-final defeat to the Crusaders and was set to miss the rest of the season.

However, WP head coach Allister Coetzee confirmed that Elstadt could make the match 22 this weekend, especially with Hilton Lobberts struggling with a shoulder injury.

‘We will monitor Rynhardt and see how it goes in terms of the technical side,’ said Coetzee. ‘His knee is 100%. We have a lineout session on Wednesday and that normally puts a lot of strain on the knees.’

In other injury news, flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis missed Monday’s practice after suffering a head injury against the Pumas last weekend, but is expected to recover in time for the trip to Ellis Park. Gio Aplon and Conrad Jantjes will provide pivot cover.

Obviously with all the exitement about Elstadt, everyone forgot to remember that Steenkamp will more than likely feature against the Lions, seeing as he missed the previous game with a stomach bug… team will more than likely look like this:

@Rhys7(Rhys7)-6: Jean Div is too slow for wing ! I would keep JJ and Habs as wings. Where is the redhead prop ? Kitchoff ? I would bring on Carr in the second half in place of Kolisi and move Schalk to 7 with Carr at 6. I feel WP should easily beat the Lions , the only reason the Lions are did so well is simply becos they competed with teams that had important players at the World Cup. Sorry nothing personal , I see a WP/Sharks final to be honest.

One more thing , the Bulls fans must be a little nervous cos without their senior boks they seem to be the 5th best team in SA and as it is their senior boks are not coming back. Time will tell.

    15 Gio Aplon
    14 JJ
    13 Jaque Fourie
    12 Jean De Villiers
    11 Bryan Habana
    10 Dimitri Ketrakillis
    9 Nic Groom
    8 Nick Koster
    7 Siya Kolisi

@thesaint(thesaint)-13: oops , forgot about De Kock ! I agree he should start then but I can tell u now so will Koster. He is WP long term number 8. Loosies will be ,

    8 – Koster
    7 – Kolisi
    6 – Schalk

Wuth Carr and Louw covering on the bench , should Elkstadt be fit one of them might even fall away as he can cover lock and loosie.

  • 16.thesaint: Reply to this comment

    @sparticus

Let’s not forget about the return of Vermeulen one of these days, I think Koster does too many stupid things ie. knocking the ball in contact, getting isolated losing turnovers, backing himself to run EVERY ball, falling off tackles, agreed, he has its moment, but the future is hardly a reason to keep him in the starting XV, play him off the bench, as they do with Fourie. Koster is too much of a “Bobby Skinstad” type player than I am completely comfortable with… At the moment the WP Front 8 should look at stability ahead of dynamic, let the backs run the show, just give them the ball.

  • 17.thesaint: Reply to this comment

I like Catrikilis, with the Super 15 looming, I can easily see him alongside Grant and Van Aswegen, all three are hard on defense and choose to take the ball flat, Van Aswegen and Catrikilis can also take the ball deeper because of their prodigeous boots. Bar another injury nightmare like 2011, I think Coetzee will be able to switch them around nicely, different horses for different courses. IMO Van Aswegen will probably compete with Johan Goosen of the Cheetahs for national honours come Tri(Quad)-Nations 2012, Lambie will remain a fullback. At this time though, should Goosen pass the Super 15 baptism of fire, I can see him being a greater player than even Daniel Carter in the future…that boy has it all.

I say bring it on Lions. Lets see if you’re all that , after beating WP a few weeks ago you’re expecting the same to happen again… HUGE mistake – you bunch of toothless circus lions.

Lions are k@k and is all this hype about resurgence etc etc. The fact is the lions did well because of the best players at WC. Lions got a moerse reality check last weekend and will again this weekend

Anyone know when Vermeulen will be back?

  • 23.Horings: Reply to this comment

Ja the Bulls were a lot worse than the WP (1 point), especially the last couple of weeks in the tournament. WP will get Schalk, old Jean, old Habana, Aplon, de Jongh back for next year. Is Jaque Fourie going to play next year? the Bulls will get Hougaard, Steyn, Spies, Ralepele, Sadie and Engelbrecht. Not a big difference? Combine that with the fact that the Bulls changed their gameplan with a new coach in a couple of months’ time and still ended only 1 point behind WP.

I am not saying the Bulls will make the playoffs of Super15 2012, but if you take into account that Pienaar will coach the Vodacom Cup, and he will take some consistency into the Currie Cup, and our U19s and U21s is top of the log, although at least 4 stars of the Currie Cup season were U21s. Face it, the Bulls are setting themselves up nicely for the next era and they are already miles ahead of the other provinces in their planning.

By the sounds of it they will also employ a not too “boring” gameplan in future.

Lions lack true leadership, Joshua strauss is a very good player but not a very good captain. The ref gave a dubious penalty against lions, strauss walked to him and ask if it was a penalty and the ref said yes. Strauss walked way. Ridiculous

@Horings(Horings)-23: WP teams u19 and u21 also there and thereabouts…they had to contend with giving players up weekly because of injuries to the senior team, we even drew u19′s…, still all three of our representative teams made the cut…

Take into account also the returns of Elstadt, Bekker, Vermeulen, Grant and maybe one or two surprise buys here and there, and a lucky dip out of the Varsity Cup and Bob’s your uncle…

  • 28.NoRugbyGuru_0_: Reply to this comment

My only concern is our current tight five. They are not good enough, we shouldve invested in forwards for next year:

    Coenie
    Liebenberg
    WP Nel
    Elstadt
    Bekker
    Brussouw
    Burger
    Vermeulen

  • 29.thesaint: Reply to this comment

Jimmy Stonehouse…too much steroids in his early life. The bloody fool Pumas lock ran into Burgers chest and nearly died… someone tell him to stop doing it, I can hear the ref now, “Yellow Card for chest charging” sounds like an offence Dolly Parton might be guilty of.

  • 32.Slappes: Reply to this comment

The lions will see on saturday if they have progressed , I mean after getting drilled in the S15 they got the CC from heaven. I say Province by 15+.

  • 33.Horings: Reply to this comment

@thesaint I am not saying Province will not do well, because they have had their structures in place a while now, but to say the Bulls are the 5th best team in SA, is like saying the Lions are the best team in SA.

Province had some ridiculous luck with injuries this season, but where the Stormers are a couple of years into their era, we are starting all over again, but I do foresee us to be serious contendors in next year’s Currie Cup already, because the Bulls are rebuilding from a solid base.

I must say I think the next era will be better than the previous one as all our Unions have their house in order. The previous era had great individuals that changed the game and the next era will be built on the strides those individuals made in SA rugby. Just compare the state of our rugby in 2003 to 2011. In 2003 the Provinces were a mess, and only the Bulls started to work on a long term plan. The Sharks joined them in 2005 and WP joined in 2009. It seems as if the Lions also got some good structures in place now.

i honestly do not think the lions will do it now that the sharks, wp (consider that elstadt and possibly etsebeth is also in the frame) and the cheetahs have their springboks back but if they do i will log in and congratulate them and all their long suffering fans.

in all fairness, take note that the lions will only really be back if there is a top 4 or 5 showing in the s15 next season, but good luck all the same.

@Horings(Horings)-23: I take it you disagree with my assessment ? The point though I was trying to make is how u gonna replace the likes of Matfield , Guthroe , Botha and FDP. All four are exceptional players that are major difficult to replace , only one so far I can see is scrummie where hourgaard offers a lot on attack. Does he have the defense game ? Time will tell but I dont feel he does. As for the rest of your returning Boks , Spies and Steyn makes the team weaker and only your WP boys will offer something positive.

PS – The loss of Sadie will be more than made up by the likes of JP Du Plessis , in 2015 I predict there will be 2 players in the Bok team that will set the tournament alight bearing injuries and they are JP De Plessis and Johan Goosen. There is just something very special of these 2 guys that I have not seen for a long time in a SA player.

    My 16 cents :)

Oh and WTF re Schalk’s disciplinary appearance ? The guy literally bounced off him before he could make the tackle ! He was only halfway into the tackle and the oke fell off. Sorry for me it looked like incomplete tackle at worst , almost like giving a high tackle when the opposing players slips into the tackle , can hardly blame the tackler !

well he certainly looks the deal and is possibly an able replacement for bakkies one day. is a very solid piece of meat. i think he’s should absolutely be a four only, but others say he could be a five too, and was a wrecking ball in the u20 wc.
he’s contracted to province so its just a matter of time before he gets game time with the stormers.

apparently he’s the son of one of the ‘infamous’ etzebeth brothers…these guys were from goodwood or somewhere and were renowned for starting moerse fights with guys at newlands, in front of the grandstands, among other things.
