Schalk back to lead WP

Schalk back to lead WP

Schalk Burger will captain WP in their semi-final fixture against the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Province skipper is one of four changes to the run-on side that faced the Pumas last weekend. Pieter Louw drops to the bench to make way for the Springbok flanker.

Lock De Kock Steenkamp takes the place of Hilton Lobberts, who drops out of the match 22 completely, while hooker Tiaan Liebenberg rotates with Deon Fourie. Outside centre Juan de Jongh also gives way for Jaque Fourie in the midfield.

‘This is one damn good team,’ WP head coach Allister Coetzee told keo.co.za. ‘I think our returning Springboks are definitely a big boost. That’s why I included them in my team last weekend, so they could ease back into our systems. It’s great to have your captain back in the starting line-up.’

There was talk of lock Rhynardt Elstadt returning for WP’s playoff games after recovering from a serious knee injury picked up during Super Rugby. However, Coetzee has revealed he’s not yet match fit.

‘Rhynardt has looked well since his return to training, but the medical team have advised me not to include him in our team. He experienced some discomfort during practice recently, so he won’t be involved at all.

‘Hilton Lobberts is fine after overcoming his shoulder injury but I’ve decided to keep Tertius Daniller on the bench as our back-up lock. His mobility gives him the edge over the locks in the WP squad. He’s also a great line-out option, shows a high level of work rate and has good distribution skills.’

WP – 15 Gio Aplon, 14 JJ Engelbrecht, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Nick Koster, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Schalk Burger (c), 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 JC Kritzinger.
Subs: 16 Deon Fourie, 17 Frans Malherbe, 18 Tertius Daniller, 19 Pieter Louw, 20 Louis Schreuder, 21 Juan de Jongh, 22 Conrad Jantjes.

    Start Danie Poolman at 14!!

Can’t see why Engelbrecht starts as he’s going to the Bulls. Poolman is probably on par with him, so the reasoning behind it is?!

What is the story with Sadie? If they’re not considering Poolman, then he could’ve been useful on the right wing.

reckon jj is streets ahead of danie… and no point in cold-shouldering the guys when we’ve still got a tough must-win match ahead of us…

the lions will be confident and very tough to beat at ellis park…

    Go WP!!

    @hendrikp(hendrikp)-1: have to disagree.
Poolman doesn’t doesn’t come across as industrious enough. Tends to float in and out of games and not really a gamebreaker. Solid without being spectacular.

  • 4.sparticus: Reply to this comment

Nooit , dont rate Poolman nearly as high as JJ !! Sorry cannot see the fuss about Pollman really , offers very little for me at wing.

  • 5.grant10: Reply to this comment

wp have no fetcher and a rickety scrum….

    Not confident….

Now, now, we don’t want to risk an injury to Sadie in WP’s last game of the season. There’s next year to think of, after all.

As for Poolman – let’s face it, you’ve been punting him over JJ eversince JJ anounced his move to the Bulls. Just because Poolman is staying doesn’t suddenly make Poolman the better player.

In fact, if he was the better player Heyneke would have contracted him instead of Engelbrecht, now would he…

WP need a front row that can scrum and not think they are centres. WP will keep
making finals but until “die vaste 5″ start performing they can forget
    about winning any trophies

Great News. Vindicates Sadie’s decision to move to Pretoria. As Habana’s contract extension vindicates JJ Engelbrecht’s move.

  • 19.Dusky: Reply to this comment

WP – Check you in the final. Your scrum will sukkel a bit against the Lions, but the week after that, your scrum will be annihilated – dismissed from this earth as a subject of mythology – that a scrum could be so hugely dominated….

I am glad to hear that bonehead will be the WP captain for this match …. I can’t wait for him to “be brave” and do something thick, according to bone template.

As for AC, let’s hope that this failure stays far far away from the Boks.

Dont agree with this team… Lobberts is much better player than steenkamp and should atleast be on the bench…also why leave Juan De Jongh on the bench! What a joke… jdv should be on the wing…no point playing JJ hes only got 2 more WP games left in his career?

    My team:

    15 Gio Aplon
    14 Jean De Villiers
    13 Jaque Fourie
    12 Juan De Jongh
    11 Bryan Habana
    10 Dimitri Cetrakillis
    9 Nic Groom
    8 Nick Koster
    7 Siya Kolisi
    6 Schalk Burger
    5 Adriaan Fondse
    4 Hilton Lobberts
    3 Frans Maherbe
    2 Tiaan Liebenberg
    1 JC Kritzinger

    16 Deon Fourie
    17 Brok Harris
    18 De Kock Steenkamp
    19 Pieter Louw
    20 Louis Schroeder
    21 Conrad Jantjes
    22 Danie Poolman

What kind of a flank is Siya, he is no ball carrier and he is no fetcher …. kind of like a light weight version of Burger … he will remember how Cilliers moered him at Newlands in the first round match, leaving him to count stars.

Anyway, yet another player who should have been playing centre.

    @Rhys7(Rhys7)-26:

You’d go in with no recognized line-out lock? Interesting. I’m no Steenkamp fan, but you’re going to struggle without him in the middle.

Also, would rather see Jaque Fourie move out to 14 and Juan de Jongh in at 13 if they had to fit them in.

de Jongh is a great player, but no 12, especially not next to an inexperienced 10.

At age group level I saw him playing against my little brother at Craven Week last year. Was devastating with ball in hand and that was how he was deployed, he seemed like he avoided rucks (bit of a Spies vibe). But he really is a light weight in when you see him here at the highest level. But let me tell you, the boy has some magic. Lets give him a year and see what he develops into when he gets his conditioning right.
