Willie le Roux and Lappies Labuschagne have finally been rewarded with spots in the Springbok training group. They are two of eight that are first timers in Springbok training groups this year. The others are Gio Aplon, Trevor Nyakane, JJ Engelbrecht, Lionel Mapoe, Wiehahn Herbst and Demetri Catrakilis. The group of players will assemble in Durban for the second training camp of the year, before the final squad for the Incoming Tours is selected. Players not considered due to injury include: JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe. ... Read Article25 May 2013
Morne Steyn kicked 18 points to beat the Sharks and end the hosts Super Rugby play-off aspirations. The Sharks looked to have conjured up a remarkable victory when Charl McLeod scored and Pat Lambie converted in the 75th minute. But within two minutes the Sharks were guilty of a lineout infringement and Steyn punished the lack of discipline. The Sharks had opportunities to sneak the victory in a frantic finish but lacked the decision-making to turn a possession and field position advantage into victory. The Bulls, thanks to Steyn's kicking, consolidated their position at the top of the ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article20 Oct 2011

What i do blame Smit for is not saying in the quarter. Guys this ref aint going to give us penalties and he is letting the Aussies run riot at ruck time.
Steyn go for drop goals when we are in the 22!!

The main sticking point on the interior renovations was the jacuzzi issue.
One faction in Cabinet supported a jacuzzi for each wife, whilst the more laissez-faire elements called for one giant jacuzzi to foster an esprit de corps.
Fearing a polokwane sized rift in the party and being a disciple of consensus politics mshlozi went for both options.
Furthermore it seems the census people stopped by at the father of the nation’s house on Monday.
Apparently they are still there.
Counting.

@captain fantail(captain fantail)-13: Cant believe you guys dont like the Throat slitter – i think it is far intense and to be honest my family turn the TV up full blast to enjoy it more ( even though my girls and better half are traitorous Saffas) … It has full entertainment value and still gives me goosebumps , maybe it is a kiwi thing but be gauranteed you will see it on Sunday

@Transformation(Transformation)-239:
This whole who is going to be future Bok captain business is futile really. There are so many players/youngsters that are built up as captain supremos that it seems that it seems to their “destiny”,sometimes has sense of entitlement to it-maybe not so much from the players themselves but their “community”. A few years ago it was Joe van Niekerk, then Gerrit van Velze,Chilliboy Rallapelle,Dewalt Potgieter,now CJ Stander…..Any trend you see???
In my opinion Juan Smith should be post rwc skipper for 2 years then pass it on to Burger till RWC 2015.(Burger is only 28) Similiar to what AB’s are goping to do i think-McCaw for next 2 years then Read from 2013-beyond.
Then next generation can jostle for leadership places within that period. But please no more talk of Bismark/Spies etc as Bok captains

So much to comment on, so little space:
@>^..^< katman(katman)-236:
What could be better than a headboy of Affies/Waterkloof type? That’s like the ultimate leadership qualities I can think of. Westpoint material.
@Transformation(Transformation)-239:
Potgieter’s sole limiting factor is his lack of size. Which is why CJ and Arno will be replacing him in the Bulls team before long. They have the necessary beef to add to their ability.
@mshiniwami(mshiniwami)-246:
Most would argue that had Matfield captained the Boks at this World Cup we would have progressed a heck of a lot farther than we did under Barney’s leadership. So your argument doesn’t really make sense.
To conclude:
These are future leadership candidates. I’m sure other provinces have equally talented individuals, but if these individuals are of the same age as Stander and Botha, they were captained by the above two individuals at junior level.
Anyway, a lot will still happen in the next few years. Quite exciting, really.

Just watched the throast slitting stuff on the nz herald site , man the guys from Tonga were really up to it and really aprecaited the Ka Mate .
Forget who should be captain, pick the bok coach first …!

@stew(stew)-253:
no, its the long pauses inbetween the dancing that puts me off the new one.
i like the throat slitting bit and in fact think they could be even more explicit about it.
but, as i said its the long pauses like when they go on their knees and just hang there mid haka…why stop?
it would look better and be more appealing imo if they did it in one gracefull continuous routine with minimal short stops.
you know…like the tempo and rhythm needs working on, but otherwise its fine.
20 Oct 2011, 11:01 am
To make sure we don’t end up with another Smit / Teichman / Pienaar incident, we should have a squad of captains who are then individually appointed to captain certain tournaments or tours.
That way, we have the freedom of dropping a captain that doesn’t make the team and we empower more than one leader.
In such a case, I’d pick Burger, Smith, Bekker, de Jongh, Lambie and Bismarck to form our leadership core

@Tacitus(Deucalion)-263:
Bekker is a Mr Sicknote and so is Brussouw.
Mine as well get used to them being on the side-line
Let’s hope Brussouw takes extra time to recover and comes back injury free. We need him

Best world cup 1995 without a doubt. Far more tries scored in the knockout section, final excepted. Jonah lomu’s performances, and such an intense final going to extra time!
This tournament has been good, but I don’t think the rugby from the big teams has been of the same standard.
Best player ever – I don’t see how you could choose. Nice of you saffas to pick cullen, but there are other candidates including Ella, Jonathan Davies, matfield, gerber, etc.
It was a shame Cullen missed he 95 world cup, it was a travesty to play him at centre in 99. He probably should have gone in 99 as well, tho injuries had robbed him of his topend speed by ben.

The tri nations games between the ab’s and boks will be somethin to look forward to next year. This year’s TN was pretty lame with understrength teams playing. new coaches for boy rams next year will see some full on confrontations between the old foes.

@grant10(grant10)-270:
Applying basic logic, Miitchell does not want it !!, Mallet does not want it, Meyer does not want it , Venter won’t be offered it , Rassie won’t take it, Gatland re-signed with Wales, White also unavailable, that leaves:
Plum , Coetzee, PDEV
Think we need to make peace with the fact that reality will dictate that AC will get it, just cannot see any other coach getting it.
I personally lay the blame at the doors of some of the egotistical coaches above who are all bek but are not willing to put their hands up !!

@Tacitus(Deucalion)-257:
Whether Matfield captained Boks at RWC 11 is irrelevant, there was no ways Boks were going to win that quarter final game with Lawrence reffing breakdown in the manner he did.Matfield also wouldnt have changed that,he has never had a good rapport with any of the refs really, often gets upset & loses his cool-many a time have seen him told to step away by refs so he was unlikely to sway Lawrence in any favourable manner to Bok cause.And missed opportunities from Du Preez,fwd passes etc wouldnt have been changed by Matfield “captaincy”.Same with Smit on that day.
So that argument holds little water neither. If you and others want to blame Smit for quarter final loss-go ahead but its hardly accurate nor is it objective.
@Helen(Helen)-260:
Not a big fan of that way of thought. Big fat success Smith has been,instead his tenure as Proteas captain was possibly the most controversial with the most upheavals and formation of player cabals etc especially early in his career hubris of youth plagues his captaincy.Not a great leader in my books.Warburton cost his team in the biggest game of Wales rugby history with a red card.
So those 2 arent good examples….

Even if you look past the lavishness (does he need a sauna room?), how on earth can any of that cost that kind of money?
