    “Auckland – Australia coach Robbie Deans fears the Rugby World Cup may never return to New Zealand as the International Rugby Board places commercial returns over the rugby experience.

    While the World Cup has been firmly embraced by rugby-obsessed New Zealand and its financial targets will be met, the country’s small population base of over four million and modest sized venues have limited tournament profits to the IRB, rugby’s global governing body.

    This World Cup has exceeded by 11 times the revenue of the previous largest grossing event in New Zealand sporting history, the 2005 British and Irish Lions tour, but that is still dwarfed by the commercial returns available in major European rugby markets.

    The next World Cup in England in 2015 is expected to be the most profitable in the tournament’s history, with increased broadcasting revenues available as matches will be played in peak British viewing slots and bigger crowds expected in larger stadiums, with some leading football grounds set to stage matches.

    But Kiwi Deans is concerned his homeland – which this year is staging only its second World Cup after co-hosting the inaugural tournament in 1987 – and other similar-sized rugby nations will miss out on hosting future editions because of the dash for cash.”

    Aich…why does the iRB insist on trying to prop up the poorer nations. Just give it to South Africa. This Third World country has it all..atmosphere, infrastructure, money and a positive rugby culture to fill stands of 60 000 and more…on a REGULAR basis.

    It has been a great World Cup by New Zealand. I have enjoyed it but the IRB does need money to grow the game worldwide. So Financial Gain makes sense in the bigger scheme of things. NZ might co-host with Australia again in future. The World Cup needs to come to S.A in 2023 we havent had it since 1995.

    I would love to see small knockout tournament between ten or 12 of the best teams. Every game must be knockout therefore the team that wins will be unbeaten. This tournament will only be 6 weeks and much more interesting than the EOYT

    Unless all the theatrics in the French camp have been a bluff. Just kidding, AB’s out-class this french team by a country mile.
    Only SA or OZ could have beaten this AB side in a final, and thats a big ‘could have’.

    Premenstrual and JL1 seem to think it ALL comes down to stadium sizes and how much revenue the IRB make, as to how success is judged. Tell us then, when does the ‘fans experience’ come in to it ?

    Seriously, we saw last nite why neither SA or Aus could have made it through….and saw it from the beginning of the tournament just how fragmented their play was against Wales, Samoa and Ireland.
    The AB’s have been the only team that has functioned as a purebred winning all of its pool games with no ‘shadows’ or questions left to ask.
    SA have had four bloody years to prepare for their defense…FOUR YEARS… and this was it? Disgraceful by all accounts for such a rugby proud nation. WTF is going on over there. If this was GH and co they would have been totally lynched and dont bother using the ref excuse, they should have been good enough to have the margins up so one wrong call wasnt the decider.
    Four Years notice and you get kicked in quarters?
