All Blacks crowned kings of the world

All Blacks crowned kings of the world

JON CARDINELLI, reporting from Eden Park, watched the All Blacks beat France 8-7 to secure their second World Cup title.

Four million New Zealanders have had to endure 24 long years in between World Cup titles. On Sunday 23 October, they had to endure a further 80 agonising minutes as their beloved All Blacks edged slowly and, at times tentatively, towards the elusive gold.

The energy of a nation was channeled in the New Zealand national anthem, and the All Blacks played their part with a spirited rendition of Kapa o Pango. France responded through Thierry Dusautoir’s passionate gesture during the Tricolores’ call-to-arms, and through the team’s decision to advance towards the hosts while they laid down the traditional challenge.

The message was clear: France would not be intimidated by the All Blacks, their media or the New Zealand people’s pre-match assertion that they had no place in this final. Their march on the All Blacks would signify a collective up-yours to all the non-believers, and their efforts in this match would underscore their passion and belief that they could indeed upset the world’s top-ranked team.

It was this fiery attitude and physicality that had the All Blacks rattled at stages. Tony Woodcock scored a simple try for the hosts when a smart lineout move opened up the French defence, but Piri Weepu failed to make the conversion. In fact, Weepu would miss all three of his attempts at goal and the All Blacks would miss out on eight points as a result. It was this lack of composure that so nearly cost the hosts the game.

The All Blacks were resolute on defence, but then so were the French. They matched the hosts at the collisions which limited the All Blacks’ attacking platform. Morgan Parra stopped Ma’a Nonu from breaching the gain line early in the first half, and paid the price for his bravery. He was able to return to the field for a brief spell but was later pulled when he failed to recover from what was a big knock.

The All Blacks would lose their own flyhalf before the first period was through. Aaron Cruden was caught between two French defenders in the 34th minute, and proceeded to hyper-extend his knee. Suddenly the All Blacks were without Cruden, their third-choice pivot, and looking to Stephen Donald, a player who wasn’t even in the country until a couple of weeks previously. If the All Blacks were going to pull this one off, the forgotten man of New Zealand rugby would have to steer them home.

Donald relieved Weepu of the goal-kicking duties and took his first opportunity early in the second half. But the 8-0 deficit did little to dampen the spirits of the French, who continued to clatter into the collisions and breakdowns with masochistic intensity.

They also persisted with their ball-in-hand tactics, and their searing counter-attacks stretched the All Blacks on numerous occasions. It was one such counter-punch that would provide the spark for a massive moment, which Dusautoir took expertly to help close the gap to 8-7.

It was during this time that the All Blacks must have been thinking about the failures of the World Cup teams of yesteryear. Weepu had shown a lack of composure in the first half through his inability to convert three very kickable opportunities, and as the French swelled with confidence, the All Blacks grew frantic.

It was a situation tailor-made for the French, and undoubtedly a worse-case scenario for the hosts.

But as plucky as the French were, they were just as erratic as in previous matches at this tournament. Credit should go to the All Blacks defence, but had France shown more composure and patience with ball-in-hand, they may have taken the lead and inspired some real panic in the New Zealand ranks. Had they converted their own goal-kicking chances, they would have assumed control as the clock wound down.

Dimitri Yachvili missed a penalty attempt early in the second stanza, and Trinh-Duc pushed a long attempt wide in the 65th minute. The replacement flyhalf also made a telling mistake when he overcooked a garryowen late in the game. It marked the end of long spell where France had pinned the hosts deep in their own territory.

It was during the remaining minutes that the All Blacks, spurred on by the thousands of desperate but patriotic Kiwis in the crowd, showed their composure. Through the determined efforts of their forwards and the collective discipline on defence, they were able to douse the French flame.

France swept from side to side for several minutes in hope of milking the penalty that would win them the game, but the All Blacks stood firm. They won the turnover, and attempted to play for time, and when referee Craig Joubert handed them a penalty, it signified the beginning of the end.

The All Blacks won the ensuing lineout and another penalty after mauling the French back, and at this point, Eden Park erupted in celebration. It will not be remembered as the most convincing performance, but it will be remembered as the day the All Blacks ended a 24-year drought and assumed the mantle of undisputed champions of the world.

the All Blacks surely by at least 20, but then again, its the French, by a country mile the most unpredictable side in world side in the world. Can there forwards create pressure on the AB’S, can the AB’S 9/10 axis work going backwards, will Parra at 10 by awesome or awful, and thats just the players, what about the ref, surely this world cup will be remembered by all, except the eventual winners, for the refereeing calls, in some big matches really poor. Surely the All Black supporters are feeling positive, but the wee little bit of doubt, if we blow this one we will never be able to look the rugby world in the eye for ages……….

Finally!!!! The greatest Rugby Team on the planet get to win a tournament designed to destroy it. Lets hope that Joubert is equallly interested in becoming the best referee in the world by blowing a fair and competent game. Joubert stands at the edge of the abbys. He can show the world that Rugby’s design is not congruent with its spirit or he could sink into the cesspool of evil alchemy.

Rise All Blacks Rise!!! One final blow!!!

  • 47.ET.: Reply to this comment

The moment of destiny and potential glory has arrived for the finalists. Only one team can win it and that team is the one who has the most points on the scoreboard by the time the referee blows the final whistle.

France can do it, only if they play a highly specifiic game for a long time, but they are unlikely to be permitted to do so by the most dominant team, certainly, in the last two years, the Mighty All Blacks.
By the end of this game we are likely to say that the world of rugby union has gone full circle and that N.Z. once again will be leading us into the next 24 year cycle as they did in 1987 when a racist S.A. was fittingly denied participation into the new competition because its majority, voteless millions demanded it to be so.

France will have to play, as they did in the first 9 mins. of the pool game, competitive rugby but for at least 65 mins. to be in with a shout of victory. But they cannot as they will be suffocated and pressured to finally capitulate. Where their Gallic minds are is the key question and who but they can truly know that answer?

At the very least we can hope for a tough, initially tight and exciting game leading to the crowning of a new, worthy and humble RW champion. I say that worthy champion will be the New Zealand All Blacks.
Many people in S.A., and especially in places like Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Kimberly, will be extremely happy with just such an outcome.

Only time now can unfold the truth.

Situation is perfectly set up for France. If they lose – well, they weren’t expected to win. But if they win? What a bonus! Like winning the lottery.

AB got their long awaited precious but France deserved it in the end

Set up nicely by the diabolical refereeing fiasco in the 1/4 final AB’s only had to deal with their own bogey team in the end and they almost faltered again at the hand of their nemesis but eventually 1 point and a missed penalty by Trun Doc stood between the greatest close call win and another famous loss.

France should not have taken off Yachvili with 5 to go was the new scrummy who knocked on with 3 min to go and handed back possession to the AB’s.

This will no doubt be good for NZ, and they were the best team at the tournament. For that I congratulate them. However and its a BIG HOWEVER, the IRB had a lot to do with the win, with the selection of cheating refs. Steve Walsh the drunken Kiwi who has popped up in Australia, could well have been in line to ref the final. Unfortunately this World cup will always be tainted.

They did what they had to do even if they played an uncharacteristic game forced on them by France.

Carter and even Cruden were missed for those kicks(for points) but Donald was the last point scoring hero with that kick.

France will leave New Zealand feeling that they let themselves down. Had they the belief that they could have done the nigh impossible, today could and would have belonged to them.

Well so the World Cup is over and the ABs are the world champs. Congrats to them…

Now its time to sort out this mess we can rugby. Refs are far to influencial in rugby. That is because the rules are open to interpretation and it needs to be addressed, now. All rucks are 50/50 calls, a penalty at any of them would not be technically incorrect. Scrums are a mess, this crouch-touch-pass-engage….
And all of the defenses are always offside, never allowing a proper attacking game.

This is what needs to be done:
    1. Sort out the scrums……
    2. Reconsider Stellenbosch rules. Mainly at the rucks: I think if you are on your feet and onside you should always be allowed to compete for the ball. That will force defenses into the ruck and not standing offside to defend and create more space for the backs.
    3. Get 2 refs on the field.
    4. Make penalties kicks only count 2 points, the team with the most tries should be the winners.

@473 cap fantail – justice has indeed been done. I was at the match, and the ab’s were the better team – just – despite being down to our 4th choice no.10 due to severe injuries. The ab’s showed amazing bmt to win the cup, and for that the south African rugby supporters should applaud us as we applauded your one point win over wales.

This isn’t the best attacking team the ab’s have fielded, and overall our 1995 and 2007 teMs were better. But this team played positive rugby, beat every team in front of them, and had the mental toughness and belief in each other to win the world cup/

We are deserved world champions. The springboks are no longer world champions, they were generally woeful since they won in 2007 and could only scrape their way to 8th place this WC.

I am over the moon for Graham Henry, smith, Hansen and McCaw. They were crucified in 2007, but had he fortitude and sheer courage to go amoher 4 years. Congratulations guys.

France played a massive game today. But it was not to be.

Today belonged to the All Blacks and this was their crowning glory. They showed why they are the no.1 ranked team in the world. They had to dig really deep to pull this one off. But that’s what champions are made of. And they have a good core of players who will stick around with the AB’s for another year or two.

Savour the moment. It doesn’t come around often.

Well done NZ enjoy it but sadly you must realise that this world cup is going to be remembered for Englands off the field antics, and diabolical refereeing and blatant refereeing bias and not for the rugby or who won it.

NZ may have won two world cups just like the Aussies and South Africa but they have never won a wc away from home and that is the real mark of a great team winning it without home ground and refereeing advantages and favouritism.

The French were heroic today and threw acid in the face of all their dumbed down critics; it’s a game that could have gone either way and Dusatoir was by far and away Man of the Match; just magnificent.

I’ve got no gripe with this result but give France their due and respect – 8-7 at Eden Park is something I personally take my hat off to and the bloggers on this site who knew that France would come to play are the ones that know their rugby.

If they did it was not at the ultimate winners South Africa’s initiative.

This was more deliberate and planned.

Bryce was sent in with specific instructions which he executed.

As a South African one can only hope that the standard of refereeing improves as South Africa right now has a limited chance to get refs that can handle a game of this magintude.

It will always be remembered that New Zealand eliminated one of their toughest rivals in world cup rugby in that way. This is the hour where they should be congratulated but there is a decidedly bad taste in the mouth of many today.

    Fair contest.

Craig gave them that, but Bryce did not. I will remind this forum of this for another 4 years.

As high as the skills levels of coaches and players of NZ, so pathetic is their refs. Lets see if they can win this thing away from Auckland, I doubt it….

Mate, I watched a game today handled by a superb ref where the French dominated your team for most of the game.

They looked more composed and no doubt the better team on the night.

But I’m a lot bigger than that. The result stands because Craig Joubert ensured a fair contest.

In the end I was happy for Ted and even Wayne Smith – note the omissions.
Ted is the leading coach in world rugby, a simple man but very astute.

I would actually love for Wayne Smith to come and coach in South Africa. He has achieved his life goal now – I know he will however be involved with a kiwi team.

    My scorecard for NZ:

    a. Hosting : 9 out 10
    b. Commentary: 6 out of 10
    c. Refereeing: 1 out of 10
    d. ABs play: 7 out of 10

Point c above refers mainly to the efforts of Paddy O’Brien and Bryce Lawrence

Congratulations to the ABs, the pressure must have been massive, no one could know how much.

When we look back the ABS will be champs, the refereeing of the tournament will be a major point of interest, just for the sake of the game.

Scrums have become such a sideshow what function to they perform? They are supposed to give the ascending team a platform to go forward but the way it is refereed it’s a lottery so why not uncontested restarts.

South Africa aka. “Sprengboks” are a disgrace and should be boycotted from international games from here on. It’s no good for the expansion of rugby if these afrikaaner clowns continue. Their style of rugby is killing the game and putting everyone off. They deserve to lose. Their participation in the 3 nations is an absolute joke and should be replaced by the Pumas. Imagine the expansive play rather than breakdown cheating and overall misconduct.

New Zealand has shown an inability to win the RWC away from home; they need to play at Eden Park and need 60,000 fans to shout ‘All Blacks’ for most of the game.

They also need to manipulate the referee allocations and ensure that they follow a path where there is little or no resistance.

France confirmed my suspicion today that there was an irrevocable belief in the AB camp that the Boks are physically superior to them. France made them look decidedly ordinary.

Happy that the awkward Stephen Donald could land that penalty or did he? It looked for all money that he missed, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

As the rugby professional I am i recommend South African rugby focus on the grassroots side of things. They have no platform to create great rugby players, they produce breakdown cheats such as brussow and complain that Bryce Lawrence (In my eyes a respected IRB Referee) penalises him for cheating. I don’t understand. South Africans can count themselves lucky, a quarter final for your country? Should be proud!

Nope, NZ won today, and France gave them a pretty good run for their money. In case you did not notice, the Boks are back in SA, playing CC.

And quit speaking as if you speak on behalf of all South Africans. I’ve been supporting the Vrystaat and the Boks for as long as I can remember, and will continue doing so. That does not prevent me from seeing that NZ has a better team at the moment – one that knocked out Australia in the SF, who knocked out SA in the QF. You can play the victim all you want, but it won’t change a thing about the fact that they’ve got the cup for the next four years, and deserved it.

So you curse us? You dont even know what a curse is.

The deeper concern I have about the tournament is that countries’ take-away will be that to win this thing you have to host it and cheat.

Rugby nations world wide have to accept the result but there is profound lesson here which I believe is to the detriment of the game, the fair contest.

Coaches, managers, administrators and the like would have seen how NZ went about their business. One can only hope and pray that this way does not become the blueprint going forward.

That’s how it is in life: often the cheaters get away with it… Win or lose we have to demand the fair contest.

    Congratulations NZ.

And well done to France for making this – in my view – the most memorable RWC final since 1995.

Now, let this NZ win be a hard lesson to SA.

    What lesson?

From 1992 when SA re-entered international rugby until today, NZ had inexplicably failed to win the RWC whilst SA had lifted the trophy twice in that period. That record gave SA an artificial sense of their importance and strength in world rugby.

    In that same period:

    1. SA has seen it’s proud 50/50 record against NZ slide
    2. NZ has won 10 3Ns, SA has won a paltry 3
    3. NZ achieved an overall 80%+ record against all comers whilst SA underachieved with an overall 65%.
    4. SA lost for the first time ever against Wales.
    5. SA has seen regular defeats at the hands of Ireland, England, France and Scotland.
    6. NZ regularly achieved Grand Slams in the NH whilst SA never did once.
    7. There were some unspeakable results against our main rivals – 52-16 v NZ; 49-0 against Aus and 53-3 against Eng. Do you ever see NZ losing that badly?

The plain truth is that SA used its success at RWCs to cover up and hide the obvious failings in its annual results. We heard “judge me at the RWC” from our coaches… we were told losing 3N games was acceptable in “building for the RWC”. And the majority of fans bought it hook, line and sinker.

NZ just proved how wrong this belief is.

SA just lost the single trump card they held over NZ since 1995. And now what do we excuse our regular defeats to NZ and Aus (at home and away) to, and the defeats in the NH? We no longer have the “another 4 years” or “we win when it matters” excuses…

SA needs to rediscover that winning EVERY match matters and that the World Cup, whilst important to win, is not the ONLY thing that matters in rugby. Win consistently – as NZ have done in the last 4 years – and the World Cup will follow.

SA has run out of excuses. From now on, the Boks need to focus on winning every game. That starts with the 4N from next year. A record of 3 triumphs in 16 years is inexcusable. We must win a Grand Slam the next time we have the opportunity – we should beat those NH teams in our sleep (NZ do, why can’t SA?).

The new coach, whoever he is, MUST have performance clauses in his contract. There will be NO free ride to RWC 2015 and the Boks MUST get up to 80% winning level.

    There is no excuse anymore.

    @wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-712:

Happy with those comments; perhaps dont agree with every fact but I agree with your overall summary.

NZ will need to do one more thing though and ensure that they can field the kind of refs that we can take seriously.

It is better for me to lose 50 – 0 but see that the contest was fair.

Our shortcomings in my mind as follows:

    * Lack of creative backline play
    * Inability to groom/nurture creative 10′s
    * Attacking players as oppose to space
    * Attacking with forwards which means there is time for defence to regroup
    * Supporting the ball carrier and running intelligent lines

If our next coach can address these – I’m afraid to say that I dont know of any SA coach that can address this- then we will make progress.

We have a new world champ and that is how it is; we have to accept it.

There are broader issues at play especially biased reffing which even Laurie Mains (another fantastic kiwi coach) questioned.

Or then we need to agree that going forward ‘cheating’ is the way; in other words, get the result you want no matter what.

The RWC is a strange affair.Throughout the tournament the French play poorly and win . On the big night they play outstandingly well and lose. Sacre Bleu!

Its taken NZ 24 years to learn how to win ugly. They have been for too long the most attractive almost team at the RWC. The only team to have never lost a pool match since its inception. finally the bounce of the ball goes their way.

Its reward for the last two years and the consistency achieved . Cheers to all the true rugby fans who acknowledge that.

SA will be back. Both teams will lose the old brigade and next year will be a fresh start for both. Australia may be the team to beat next year in the 3N and I hope Wales capitalize on their success moving forward.

For now its sweet for the NZ fans. Its been a long time coming for a nation used to their team winning everything but the ultimate prize.

There are very few countries in the world that Union is the number one unifying passion across all walks of life.
We do take it too seriously, we do get arrogant about the ABs and are terrible losers when they fail.
But when you are or have been a great union player regardless of where you are from (and I witnessed this a number of times during the RWC) and you walk the streets in New Zealand you will be recognized and acknowledged. You may even be a distant memory in your own country but in Aotearoa people will still want to seek you out and shake your hand.

That makes me prouder about NZ rugby than any AB victory.

Chch, are you a kiwi? Are you hating on Graham Henry?

I was at the game and haven’t seen a replay, but I wonder if we kicked because the pressure of the French tackling forced us into it. Certainly the French tactic of keeping the ball in hand cut out a significant part of the aerial advantage we had over Aussie. Clever French.

There is no need to bring Mains in to justify my ‘claims’ ; I’m saying that even he questioned it, credit must go to him for taking a stand. I feel sorry for him though as he will most probably have to leave the country now.

You cannot honestly say to me that Bryce handled that game fairly.

Dont try to say he missed things for both sides; as it is not true.

I assure you that if it was not for Bryce I would have been the first to congratulate the ABs. However, he did what he did and forever we will know that World Cups going forward will not be the same again.

Host countries will increasingly look to cheat and manipulate etc just as long as they get the result. Then afterwards they plan extensive self-congratulatory parades etc and the rest are sour losers. You’ve set that standard now you will be required to live by it.

I guess what bothers me that one could choose to support a team that wins a RWC every 24 years but only at home. You have to question the logic; it would for instance make more sense to support the Wallabies – who have won 2x RWCs

Perhaps its misguided support for the Maori and non-Pakeha peoples; well then rather support the French who has a black captain – in short it seems the support is race based which is not in line with modern standards

I really want to know if Ellis had a brain failure or if he was told to kick up-and-unders over and over again.
In hindsight Jimmy would have gone well today.

I would have thought that playing Cory Jayne at 10 would have been better than dropping a player into a final after missing earlier games and indeed the team in general.
Even when Cruden was injured we could have put on Ellis and moved Weepu to 10. Dagg could kick penalties.

Weepu was a good ‘fat controller’ when Carter was injured and despite being off form today served us well. The public hype must have effected him at least a little.

Guys, NZ won. We didn’t. Time to move on and stop the childish bickering.

Rather put all your energies into getting the Boks back up to where they belong – winning the 4N next year and competing with NZ for the No. 1 IRB ranking on an annual basis.

    - which coach will best offer us that opportunity?

I for one am sick of the Bok excuses and mediocre 65% win ratios… let’s get our team to a place where we don’t need to constantly make up excuses.

Remember, the kiwis want you to fight amongst yourselves… perhaps one day when we can put all our provincial differences aside we can match NZ.

But for now, let’s make sure we make enough noise and let SARU know we will settle only for the best coach for the job.

Then Australia in the semis, which were pulverised by the Boks and the entire nation of New Zealand targeted Quade Cooper; that was actually quite pathetic and just about sums up so much of what we have come to expect from the kiwis

Today they were tested and somehow some way they got there; France maybe just needed a more reliable goal kicker and they would have been there

In the big scheme of things the Boks prolly deserved more to be in the final than the French

I did post before the game that I was concerened that simply bringing in the boks wouldn’t automatically solve the problem. We saw that with the Bulls last year against a team that was used to playing well together. This Lions team is the same.

Sharks looking strong mentally though, that will stand them in good stead at Ellis Park next week.

I reckon they just have too much class and quality for the Lions – will probably shade the forward exchanges and win by 3-7 imo,in fact I am quite sure they will win.

    @stormersboy(stormersboy)-865:

The mental aspect of the game is prolly the biggest aspect that a coach should prepare his charges.

The physical conditioning is pretty much on par at the prof level; Test rugby just that 20-30% higher intensity but then its down to the mental prep; the alertness and being switched on.

France was switched on to absorb the pressure from the ABs but somehow did not simulate it in their minds to win; somehow they could not go there and is a function of their form (not consistent)

Province has been poor over the last 10 yrs; Rassie started something but the cupboard remains empty. Why do they have so many injuries – its speaks to poor conditioning.

Allister for me too much of an optimist to really change it around; it focuses on the positives while top coaches focuses also on weaknesses of opposition.

It was interesting for instance that Mitch said after the game that Province were ‘not ready’ for certain of the things they did. Just like France was not ready for the 2 pod line out of the ABs.

It is now officially 10 yrs since Province won the Currie Cup and there is nothing to suggest that they will win it next year or the year thereafter.

I was not even disappointed as I expected that if they beat the Lions then the Sharks will beat them fairly easily.

Problem is that the work they do really only show results after 1 year.

Unless the coach has a strong ability to deal with the mental aspects himself; the professional era is highly specialised so you need all the help you can get

I remember PdV stating before he became coach that no psychologist will ever work with his team. Not sure whether he changed his mind but a blind spot like that can have detrimental consequences.

Sport psychologists can add a lot of value to a team’s performance.

If you listen to Mitch carefully you appreciate the man’s knowledge and insight.
So then you can come with your 5 yr old cliches like ‘we did not pitch’ ‘ the guys dd not put their hands up’ etc but it’s meaningless

You are then outclassed by a smarter opponent for example who can give you clear instructions on nullifying say a Gio Aplon

It will be interesting to see how he approaches the Sharks game as these guys have brought their Springbok game (takeing up with big forwards) into the Currie Cup now. So they should get the upperhand in the 2nd half ; my guess is that Mitch will get them to spread it wide with loose trio running supporting lines

Elton Jantjies will be key in executing but he does have Butch if the occasion is too big

You should really look at the number of prof rugby players per nation to make an apple for apples comparison

For eg you cannot look at 50million population of SA as only between 4 and 7 million really into rugby, anyway thats my estimation

I still maintain that our isolation years denied the country’s rugby to move with the times. Our players skills levels is what let them down esp under pressure

Ironically the 24 yrs of pain for the Kiwis made hungrier and from what I can see they have moved a good 15-20% ahead of other rugby nations; esp with coaching – no wonder they had 75% of coaches in the last 4 at RWC2011

Not sure where the ref side of things went south; prob Petty’s leadership

Gary Kirsten from what I can see can be that change agent for Cricket SA, who will that coach be for rugby?

We have to get smarter otherwise pain and more pain will be our portion

I was saying the same thing after the Boks crashed out of the RWC and I got called a poephol and told to shut up and that I was too stupid to comment on this blog because I was called for the next coach to have performance clauses in his contract and that 80% win ratio should be what we as fans accept.

Its unbelievable how short-sighted a lot of Bok supporters are. Hendrikp was laying into me because I said PdV was a weak kak coach and we should get a Kiwi to be the next Bok coach. He and many other were saying that Coetzee is the best option for the Boks.

If Coetzee becomes coach we will see better defence but that’s it. Our win ratio will remain at 65% or less. We will still struggle to score tries. We will pick slow wingers and unimaginative, one-dimensional centres and continue to play crash-ball, run-into-traffic, zero offload rugby. Nothing will change.

Unfortunately it seems that this will happen because I think Hoskins sold his soul to the ANC in order to keep the top job and he made assurances to them that from now on Bok coaches will be picked on transformation criteria and not on merit. To the world it looks like the ANC are transforming rugby in SA when really it is window-dressing for a lack of investment in grass-roots sports development.

Only children with money can afford to play rugby. That is why the rate of transformation is so slow.

Saru is run by a bunch of souless, money-grabbing autocrats who are prepared to sacrifice SA’s rugby reputation in order to get rich and fat off ANC hand-outs.

Craig Joubert definitely helped Richie and Ted overcome one more famous choke which was STARING them in the face.. if this WC was not tainted by setup ref’s you can rest assured France would have won today (SA time) yesterday (NZ time)

Go check it again.. late into second half and Frenchies were ALL over AB’s like a f’ng blanketed rash and AB’s were goeing wal like NEVER before

French went through 15 or 18 phases on the halfway line busting through some tackles with Harinorduquey, Dusetoir and Bonnaire making Richie, Read and Kaino there proverbial biatches until Joubert came through and saved the day.

On minute 74 France came storming through about 35 mts out, and AB’s sealed off and lay all over the breakdown ball off their feet and sprawled gasping for all they were worth.. right there was a penalty if ever there was a moment of panic stations hitting the entire rugby world seeing AB’s go down to Les Bleus once again when it mattered most.. and Craig Joubert didn’t have the balls to pull out his penny whistle and blow the right call…

That would have been the ball game and the WC in its glory.. and Joubert goeied wal alongside Richie, Kaino, Whitelock, Thorn and Read for all he was worth.. because France would have nailed that last nail through AB’s last hope coffin like never before..

Go check it again.. from minute 40-80 it was ALL France and not a glimmer of an AB hope with Rougerie and Mermoz repeatedly making Nonu and Smith look like kindergarten playmates in the midfield and Traille owning Dagg with Trinh Duc and Yachvili cleaning up Weepu, Ellis and Donald Cluck…

If ever there was an IRB miracle conspiracy shoring up the hopes of a nation for evermore.. this was IT.. and everyone close enough to the action know it.. Till Lievermont had one more of his brain implosions by replacing Yachvili with a debutante rookie scrummy with less than 5 to go and one more time Rougerie bust through Smith and Nonu with AB’s sprawled in defensive disarray and the rookie scrummy providing AB’s with the lat turnover that sealed France’s inevitable setup fate..

It’s not all about coaching, 80% of winning consistently at test level is looking after your best players so they are able to take the field in every test. Until SA manage sort that they’ll never be as consistent as NZ and will be relying on the odd good year or big WC performance. NZ have all that off-field structure sorted, they rarely field a weakened team.

  • 906.ashampoopaloo: Reply to this comment

Craig Joubert was the hero of the day he also avoided blowing a blatant high tackle by Donald on Mermoz earlier in the one sided French dominant half and allowed AB’s to seal and slow French ball refusing to blow the daylight rule at the breakdown just like Bryce before him…

IRB done their homework well to assure an AB eventual relief from the blessed choke because it was DEFINITELY ON.. the choke was visible right before everybody’s eyes.. only CJ couldn’t bring himself to bring it on with far too much national psychological disorder staring the poor NZ folk in the eye…

if EVER the once rampant AB’s were fckd up absolutely solid for an entire 40 minutes of rugby last night was the night in the WC final on their home turf in front of their own baying praying hoping gnashing fans and calling on every last ounce of reserved faith that the rugby gods and the bought ref wouldn’t put it into them again… AB’s were absolutely and totally dominated by a French outfit that simply OWNED them all 80 minutes long in that one sided French dominated second half…

shades of 99 and 07 all over again.. only difference was this time they had the ref inside their back pocket and the sentiment for a loss was just THAT too far over the precipice for even a so called professional ref from blowing them over the last hope cliff and into the abyss of despair forever…

@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-902: the stakes were high for them at this WC skop, NZ and Oz are both in the red financially, they’re hemorrhaging test players to Euro clubs and spectator/viewer interest in the sport is dying both nations. The RWC 2007 was a disaster for the coffers, another blow like that would have left their rugby in a perilous state. SA were sacrificed for Oz and France for NZ, to keep their heads above water, it is what it is.

Regarding the NZ team, we expect better due to their consistency between WCs and the style with which they play but I just don’t think they have three big WC knockout performances in them. It’s been the story of the past 24 years and if that match today took place anywhere but NZ they would’ve lost. That is the closest WC winning margin on record. I suspect we may not see another NZ WC win until they host it at home again (if ever).

But last night (NZ time) France deserved the victory and they were in fact the deserving champs… however the sentiment and perhaps the financial implications (heaven forbid it ever gets disclosed) was such that IRB simply could have it no other way with NZ hosting the tournament and the ailing aching psyches that would simply drown beneath the south pacific ocean if the gods and the powers that be would have ruled it absolutely justly and dispassionately…

They did battle in the second half and with their goal kicking (if they had kicked better the game would have been won by half time) but defended well and proved they can win when things are not going according to plan unlike NZ teams in the past. Winning three tough knockout games in a row is tough for any team. We nearly blew it against Fiji in 2007 and even battled for awhile against an average England side in the final. The pressure on NZ in this World Cup was massive and they would not be human if some of it did not get to them. I think now that they have the WC ****** off their backs they will be very tough to beat in future tournaments. The boks are going to have to choose wisely when selecting a coach or we are going to fall behind.

AB’s seal off.. hands in ruck and Joubert refuses to blow AB’s out the game.. because right there it was tickets and AB’s would have been left ruing another close shave choking loss to their Nemesis.. but this time where it mattered most right at home where the blood and guts would have spilled on the Auckland streets at another demeaning defeat where the costs were just that little bit too far beyond the scope of the hopeless hopes had it to come about…

@malcolm(malcolm)-930: there were two teams playing though Malc, France showed a lot of heart too, written off and insulted by everyone, even by their own crazy coach, they took the criticism, united and played NZ away from home in their own WC lost by a single point (and they missed penalties too) dominating possession and territory. It was a close game and unfortunately the chief deciding factor was the man with the whistle.

@Big Hit(Big Hit)-935: The French played very well. I had a feeling with the way they faced the haka that this was going to be a big French performance. Where I disagree is that the ref was the deciding factor. I think Joubert had a very solid game. He did make a few mistakes but on both sides. If anyone looks at any game from only one perspective you will always be able to pick up mistakes to justify ones view about any ref.

The France scrum-half, Dimitri Yachvili, had no such qualms. “The referee was under a lot of pressure,” he said. “He did not want us to win.

just coz the french had one good game in the comp does not mean they deserved to win it. sure they were marginally better on the night, the ABs looked fatigued in the second half and nearly choked, but they were the best team in the competition and consistently the best team in the world. of course the ABs deserved their victory. it would have been a travesty had france actually won.

congrats ABs. a loss last night would be beyond contemplation! we’d have a nation in mourning.

836 If France did not want to win in the pool stages surely that amounts to match fixing and downright cheating as well as disrespecting the tournament. Don’t you find it strange, you trying to be fair and speaking on their behalf about the supposed “injustices”. I could list instances were ABs had dubious decisions against them

  • 951.ashampoopaloo: Reply to this comment

set UP…anyway you wanna look at it that’s what it is.. Rugby is one game that is easily controlled and manipulated by the man with the whistle and where outcomes are easily and sometimes surreptitiously influenced to go the way of pressurized sentiment.

These people, these refs are human and they cannot dissociate their inner or outwardly applied preferences or pressures from their decision making, and Joubert as reasonable a ref as he may be succumbed to those pressures when he was faced with them like most others will.

AB’s are/were the darlings of the rugby world and IRB hierarchy more so than France.. So France became the convenient sacrificial lambs at the alter of NZRU and IRB stakeholders desires and wishes at the cutting edge of the fine knife edge between prestige and failure.

France were due a couple penalties through the last 15. Minutes when AB’s were scrambling for all they were worth to save their last prevailing hope. The stay of execution was granted by the man with the whistle who saw them home to the relief and perhaps even the overall sentiment that over the long term AB’s are/were the deserving champions.

But on the night they weren’t,.. France were.

A blogger called, er, Munki Boy
    Was grumpily chucking his toy.
    As Kiwis prevail
    And poor Yarpies trail
Fate sucked out all of his joy.

In oh-seven’s gold days of yore
The Boks fluked the easiest draw.
    No Aussies to beat
    No ABs to defeat
Die bekertjie’s ours boys, for shore!

So, while they did mock and deride
    A patently superior side
    For four years they’d scoff
    And expect that cough
From Kiwis who’d choke and subside.

But now that the champion’s throne
Belongs to the All Blacks alone
    The best they can do
    Is “blame the ref, boo!”
And strike up a whiny old tone.

So Tack’s now your laureate poet
And Keo, Ry and Jon they all know it.
    They really should pay
    For such verse, no delay
Here is a fine chance, don’t you blow it!

Time to break free and go for gold on every front not only once out of every 4 years .. time to take Bok rugby back to where it supposed to be up there where winning was a culture at every turn and every test and running the ball was uppermost in gaining supremacy across the advantage line..

Treu, Du Plessis, and Proudfoot or Mitchell as the 3 coaches with perhaps Venter or Meyer or Erasmus as technical management consultant

  • 1009.ashampoopaloo: Reply to this comment

@TheTackler(TheTackler)-1007: rugby head coach is more about player management and insight and less about direct technical input and ability which should come from the specialists assisting…

Treu has enough common rugby knowledge and sense to know who to pick where to pick them and how to gel a winning combo together as long as he has highly qualified and astute assistants pulling for the same cause…

So I ain’t phased about his lack of 15 man game expertise.. I’m more concerned with his personal player management abilities and his winning psychological character which I believe he has in spades.. and that counts for more than the technical input which he can gain and glean from well chosen assistants surrounding his head coaching portfolio…

Even I could coach successfully with the correct surrounding structures and that is with very limited technical know-how or input.. head coach in modern setups is far more about overall broad picture perspective and strategy and ability to recognize strengths and weaknesses and steer an overall course, and less about technical analysis and detail which is best left to those employed for their specific specialist input which is what they should be directly accountable for

Yeah me too.. fresh new ideas and fresh new brave decision making with far less conservative fear should be the way to go.. get rid of this pathetic fear of failure at WC’s its a misnomer that should be put into its perspective of the lucky packet Russian roulette type setup it actually is and build a winning performance based strategy across the entire spectrum of Bok rugby through every phase and every test.. WC’s actually spoil the rest of the tenure because of this inane desire to be king of the heap once in 4 years and bugger the rest of the time..

anyway best I be out now its late enough here ..

@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-1009: Player management? Then hire a good senior nursing sister from Bara Hospital. A rugby coach must have a proven ability to SUCCESSFULLY coach 15 man rugby, not the 7-man ping-pong faux variant. See how Treu will do in charge of Griquas, Boland or WP and how he fares against serious 15-man heavy-hitters like Mitchell, Meyer and Plumtree.

@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-1009: Gordon Tietjens has run rings around Treu as a Sevens coach and developer of talent. And Tietch has a huge raft of world titles to prove it. Yet he’s not deemed fit to even be head-coach of a Super 15 team!

@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-1006: PDV was kinda left field. Actually more like another field another field all together. Le’s get a decent coach that has the experience.
