Fourie set for Japanese stint

Fourie set for Japanese stint

Jaque Fourie has agreed a short-term deal with Japanese club the Panasonic Wild Knights.

There have been reports linking the Springbok and Stormers centre to a move to Japan over the last fortnight. After discussions between the player and the WP union, it has been decided that Fourie will be released to play for the Wild Knights for the duration of their domestic season.

The 28-year-old will return in time for the Stormers’ Super Rugby campaign, that kicks off on 24 February. However, with the Japanese domestic season only ending on 5 February, it means Fourie will head straight into Super Rugby preparations with no break after a busy 2011, which included an extended Super Rugby season, Tri-Nations and World Cup tournaments.

Fourie is the second Stormers player to be sent out on loan to a Japanese club. Flyhalf Peter Grant is currently playing in his second campaign for the Kobe Kobelco Steelers, and will also rush back into Super Rugby next year. Springbok and Bulls scrumhalf Fourie du Preez and lock Danie Rossouw have both signed two-year deals with Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath.

This site has it on good authority that there is an opportunity for Fourie to make a permanent transfer to Japan after Super Rugby. Fourie will have the opportunity to experience Japan and their domestic rugby from October to February, and could be open to a longer deal.

This really doesn’t help the Stormers.
At the start of the last S15, their flyhalves were getting crocked as frequently as
    NZ’s at the RWC.
Stormers were desperate to get Grant back, but his Japanese team made the play-offs
    and they had to wait.
Then there was the worry that he’d be played into the ground.
    He returned and played well.
Although, if memory serves, he also got injured.
But the point is it did the Stormers’ preparations and planning absolutely no favoours.
    Van Aswegen is clearly injury-prone.
So Catrikilis (promising but no S15 experience) is likely to be first-choice at start of S15 season.
What if he gets injured. He also seems to be prone to the odd niggle.
What then? Coleman, Dollie, Lane? Please no.
And what if JDV and/pr JDJ get injured?
    Eish.

Another Mickey Mouse contract. Nice one Province.
Why do players make the move to Province then move overseas?
Do WP fck up these players so badly that no other union wants them back?

Stormers 1st choice 22 makes for formidable reading:

    1. Kitshoff 2. Liebenberg 3. Malherbe 4. Elstadt 5. Bekker 6. Burger 7. Louw 8. Vermeulen 9. Duvenhage 10. Grant 11. Habana 12. De Villiers 13. Fourie 14. Van Den Heever 15. Aplon

    16. Fourie 17. Harris 18. Etsebeth 19. Koster 20. Groom 21. Catrikilis 22. De Jongh

But how often will they be able to prepare for and compete in matches with this 22?

no one but himself to blame if he breakdowns in 2012. Wonder if he’s now on a ‘pay as you go’ contract at the stormers and if he will be awarded with a bok contract in 2012, or be on the same pay/play deal. The risk of injury is surely up 25% with zero break.
The new bok coach wont be impressed.

I have to question this okes integrity. If you look at Guthro, Fourie Du Preez and Danie Rossouw’s manner in which they negotiated their new contracts. They were transparent and had the integrity to be as loyal as possible to the union that paid their salaries. JF signed a contract with the Lions and went back on his word to play for the Stormers. We all know how that played out. Now, The Stormers paid big bucks for this clown and JF is not worried about WP’s title aspirations in the S15! How will he be able to compete at that level after coming back from Japan with no rest…..If I never see this clown in a Springbok jersey, it will be to soon!! Trust me…this is good riddance! Juan De Jong will now at last proof his worth!

The frogs went well beyond that, and I remember thinking on Sunday that they were going to get some censure for that,

I think it’s ridiculous personally, but in their defense, the ‘blacks stand well away from the Half way line, behind the 10m line even.

I remember an incident with our guys where someone was advancing on Jonah lomu when he was doing the haka and they almost climbed into each other as it ended.

For the next two years, for sure.
Don’t know whether Juan Smith and Schalk Burger have another world cup in them, considering how much rugby they’ve played – defs not Juan Smith.
And I reckon, after two years, you may find the likes of Jacques Fourie, Steenkamp etc. being usurped by younger players.
Boks have a ton of youngsters set to come through:
Kitshoff, Oosthuyzen, Elstadt, Etsebeth, Kruger, Minnie, Strauss, Kolisi, Goosen, Engelbrecht, Venter, Sadie, Taute… to name a few (not to mention other younger more established players like Mtawarira, Brussow, Hougaard, Mvovo, Lambie who deserve more consistent game time).
    So future is looking bright.
Now all that’s needed is the right coaching staff to harness and guide the talent.

    @stew(stew)-35: Rugby World Cup 2011

    France fined for haka breach
    2011-10-24 14:07

Dublin – France have been hit with a £10 000 fine by the IRB for advancing on the New Zealand haka prior to Sunday’s Rugby World Cup final.

VIDEO: Haka prior to 2011 Rugby World Cup final

France broke IRB rules by not staying the prescribed distance away from the haka and therefore incurred the fine.

Speaking before the fine was confirmed, Marc Lievremont said his captain Thierry Dusautoir tried to prevent his team-mates from crossing the halfway line.

Lievremont told reporters: “He tried to stop them, there was a bit of movement bringing them forward.”

Meanwhile, Richie McCaw claimed that he was not surprised by the French team’s actions, saying: “We talked that they’d bring something different and they did, but the game doesn’t start until the whistle blows does it?”

I think players based abroad wont be picked bar Steyn. So Ruan, Johan Muller, BJ etc looked to have had their last days in bok colours…cant say im complaining. I also hope we find a better replacement than CJ, he has stacked up the cash in bok caps for his ‘versatility’ to play on both sides of the scrum. Pity he doesnt know what a ruck or maul is.

Thing is, and this is where the IRB have a point, is that if it’s allowed to be challenged that way unchecked, that one day soon there will be a ‘contact” incident and all hell will break loose. That would be a very bad day.

The apposing team can do basically whatever they like, as long as it’s in their own half. They can ignore, stand in a circle, face them, turn their backs, it’s all been done at some stage.

Just stay in your half, the AB’s after all stay in theirs.

I don’t see the problem quite frankly

Coenie Oosthuyzen must be nurtured as the ideal Bok prop cover on both sides of the scrum – fantastic talent.
As far as I know, the rule is 3 overseas-based Bok players can make a Bok squad.
I still think Steenkamp and of course Frans Steyn have a lot to offer.
Gerhard Mostert too, although the young second row stocks are looking good, which I am very relieved about considering the Boks have just lost 3 of the best locks in world rugby (if not THE best).
Not sure what the ruling will be re players who have one foot in the country and one foot out the country ala Sarel Pretorius and Jacques Fourie.
Boks are suddenly looking a bit vulnerable at scrumhalf beyond Francois Hougaard, so potentially both Pretorius and Ruan Pienaar will be in the mix next year.

Rugby World Cup Limited Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

The Frenchman stated that the tournament had achieved the key goals of furthering the profile of Rugby and New Zealand around the world.
New Zealand’s 8-7 victory over France in the Rugby World Cup 2011 Final brought down the curtain on a tournament that achieved all ticketing, sponsorship and broadcast targets as more than 100,000 international fans joined New Zealanders in attending matches at Rugby’s showcase event.

“New Zealand 2011 will be remembered as an exceptionalRugby World Cup. It has been a tournament where New Zealand’s rich culture and heritage has gone hand in hand with Rugby’s tradition and values.”

“New Zealanders should be proud of their event. They made it special by embracing the tournament the length and breadth of the country, welcoming all 20 teams and 100,000 international visitors with open arms. It was quite remarkable.”

Lapasset also praised the Tournament Organisers and the spirit of close collaboration that has delivered one of the great Rugby World Cups.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Brian Roche, Martin Snedden and the Rugby New Zealand 2011 team, the New Zealand Rugby Union and the Government for their vision, dedication and hard work in delivering Rugby World Cup 2011 in partnership with the IRB team.

“Their reward is the successful hosting of what will be remembered as one of the great Rugby World Cups, a sporting and operational success.
“New Zealand 2011 has positioned the country as a major event host, a superb tourism destination and a great country. It has also taken our sport to new audiences and has set the bar for future hosts.”

As long as JF is back in time for the S15… I’m not too fussed by him playing in Japan…

It’s hardly the toughest league in the world and he’s unlikely to get injured… and it may be a way for him to keep ‘match’ fit and in touch with his game and he could come back more ‘ready’ than other S15 players in all teams who ‘veg’ over the festive season… although obviously most squads will be in some sort of training…

As far as France getting fined for advancing on the haka… it’s ridiculous…

I’ve always been okay with the haka… although rib some of our kiwi posters about it…. but if the IRB makes laws that the Kiwis can do their haka and prescribe how teams may or may not react to what is, after all, a challenge… then (sorry my kiwi friends…) it is time to get rid go the haka…

how the hell can there be laws in rugby that so obviously favour one team?? (okay four teams but the rule was made for the ABs…)

@ufo(ufo)-82: IRB chief executive Mike Miller told the Herald that teams cannot disrepect traditional aspects of a nation’s cultural heritage by reacting in certain ways to a haka or war dance, and that a harder stance will be taking by the game’s governing body in the future.

“It’s a traditional part of the game,” Miller said.

“If people want to develop something – not a response, not a war dance, but a traditional sporting or cultural way of engendering that team spirit for a match – great. They should be able to and we should create the space to do it.”

“It would be a shame if people said: ‘Let’s do away with it’ or felt the need to do some response that took away from the dignity and power of it.”

“There is the protocol that says let them have the space. We discuss it with everyone before. We say: ‘We are serious about this and that there is a fine’ if they do it. So they can’t say they didn’t know and most people respect that. These cultural parts of the game are important. We should respect them.”

it’s there though and i quite like it and for me the french or any other team should be allowed to respond/accept the challenge in a manner they deem fit as long as it is not seen as over the top – keep the 10 or 15m distance.

    Rassie, Allister: We’re not available

    Mon, 24 Oct 2011 16:19

No thanks: We don’t want Divvy’s job. (c) Gallo

The Western Province duo of Rassie Erasmus and Allister Coetzee have declared themselves unavailable for the Springbok coaching job and have no interest in the position at this time.

Erasmus and Coetzee were widely regarded as the frontrunners to take over from Peter de Villiers and become a new coaching team at the helm of the South African side.

Erasmus has been with the team as the technical advisor during the World Cup, but has stated that he only intended to stay with the side for the duration of the tournament and will continue to work as Western Province’s Director of Rugby.

Coetzee – who had a four-year stint with the Boks as one of Jake White’s assistant coaches – has indicated that he has another year to run on his contract with Western Province, which he intends to honour. Therefore, he has made it known that he is unavailable for the job.

The game will always be there to be followed and appreciably enjoyed without being a mere jersey colour follower.
This past RWC was the best for me ever and I have no jersey colour prefereence other than the truth. Next RWC I see the Aussies or Frenchies(they deserve one) or again the ABs in that order leading the charge.

Just be truthful as that is what got me my seven for seven and much enjoyment in this last tournamment.

The blue and white hooped, non-professional W.P. u/19s and u/20s will always be value for money and give you enjoyment and even much more success than disappointments. Thereafter concentrate on individuals. That explains why I can appreciate a Jean De Villiers more than a Skunk Burger.

Shadow might not be such a bad signing. He was probably cheaper than what Engelbrecht is costing the Bulls, and having wing that can play 15, in todays game, is quite an advantage. He would be a far more attacking option than Conrad is currently. Besides, if Riaan Viljoen is headed for Durban, who I believe was Rassies first choice, there wasn’t much left to choose from.

    @fantasticbarnsmell(fantasticbarnsmell)-245: @PissAnt(PissAnt)-247:

    Actually forget that.

I have been playing with the idea of changing our approach in this matter altogether.

I still firmly believe we need a Director of Coaching in SA Rugby looking after all national teams (U/19, U/20, Emerging Boks and Boks) as well as being the national co-ordinator between Super Rugby coaches.

His role will not be hands on so much, but ensuring the Bok coach gets as much support as possible from all feeding structures. And there is only one man in my view for this job.

Secondly, appoint a ‘coach’ or ‘manager’ for the Bok team. He can still be the main cookie in the jar but it has to be an individual with experience (obviously) but more importantly implementing a structure, game plan, style of play (call it whatever you want) so his management of players, skills in taking something from a whiteboard (and panel of consultants) and implement it practically in a live environment, and management of the media also being crucial.

But perhaps it is time to break away from the traditional ‘assistant coach’ mould.

Why not identify a panel of experts you require in the modern game (forwards expert, backline expert, defense expert, attacking expert, kicking coach, mental coach, skills coach, contact coach, fitness coach, etc) and then employ them as consultants only (no permanent contracts).

You then have the DOR and Bok head coach (manager) running the show on permanent contracts and then simply pull in experts on a consultancy basis?

Any ‘coach’ in the world under permanent contract with any other team can easily, with permission, consult with the Boks for short periods in their off-season.

It will keep ideas fresh, trends fresh, players challenged with new ideas all the time and get rid of damn routines and a sameness we so easily (and constantly) fall into and cannot get ourselves out of.

DOR and head coach (manager) are still held accountable for those they pull in and results achieved – but it is a whole different approach which the more I think about, the more I like.

Still need to get over my own pre-conceived criticism of such an approach though, but that’s just it – I think we should challenge ourselves more and think outside of the box – or think like there is no box…

This something we’ve discussed over the years here and both of us realise that the DOR or DRC would be fighting a losing battle against the franchises. Although technically, SARU own the SA S15 Conference rights and has to approve the appointment of franchise coaches and ensure that the top 150 players are involved, the reality is that they’ve allowed the franchises to operate independent of SARU influence.

  • 259.fantasticbarnsmell: Reply to this comment

@PissAnt(PissAnt)-254: one question with the consultants… what happens if say you have your forwards coach who’s been working well with the guys, but suddenly he becomes unavailable for whatever reason (being without a contact, this is likely to occur at some stage), then you need bring a new coach in… would you not lose some of that continuity… would this not be a problem?

  • 260.Loyal Lion: Reply to this comment

We have the best talent available in this country. Our coaches are unfortunately very limited and like someone mentioned earlier, players are calling the shots. The Lions had that problem for years and as soon as Mitchell took over, the jano’s and co did not like this. JF is overrated and greedy and his integrity sucks. We need players in the Bok team that will die for that jersey again, JF is not one of them. Cheers Mossie, jy het jou naam weer met ‘n plank geslaan.

    @Loyal Lion(Loyal Lion)-260:
What Mitchel seems to have done is to develop a squad where nobody is sancrosanct. All the players are competing for their positions and need to prove themselves every game. The Boks under Jake and PdeV only had their senior players and reserves.

  • 262.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@David(David)-261: That is very true. Mitchell has dropped jantjies, Francis and Jame when their form was lacking. Doppies even.

That is a very strong positive about his management this year. It seems to have done the trick too!

  • 263.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    @fantasticbarnsmell(fantasticbarnsmell)-259:

Whatever knowledge, structures or ideas any consultant brings in won’t be lost once he leaves.

If the management (coach, DOR at the time) believes he should be involved on a more permanent basis for whatever reason – then make the guy an offer.

The thing about a consultant based approach is you never get stuck in a specific way of thinking or doing things – rugby is such a dynamic game which evolves on a weekly – forget yearly basis!

It is a case (for me) of keeping what works, forgetting what doesn’t without the fear of pissing off personalities or ego’s while doing it.

It will put a whole lot of responsibility on one or two people but in my view we already have that (coaches are first in the firing line when **** goes wrong).

But as David said above – the general idea is not new, some have been asking for this type of approach for years but this comes down to the fact of whether SA Rugby has the balls (or know-how) to do this – especially on the DOR front.

  • 264.David: Reply to this comment

    @David(David)-261:
BTW, I’m not advocating a Strauli approach, but a squad of at least 30 players of equal, although different ability, who are competing against each other. The ABs only had two players who were guaranteed of starting and I cannot believe that the provinces and the Boks only have 15 standout players who are automatic choices.
