Mark Lawrence will officiate the Currie Cup final between the Lions and Sharks in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The 46-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from Test match refereeing after being excluded from the recent World Cup, will take charge of his second domestic title decider. He reffed the 2007 Currie Cup final between the Lions and Cheetahs, as well as the 2009 Super Rugby final between the Sharks and Bulls.
‘Mark has consistently been one of the best referees in South Africa, if not the world, and his appointment to the Absa Currie Cup Final is just reward for his superb performances not only this season, but throughout his career,’ said Saru manager of referees Andre Watson.
‘The decision has not been easy as we are blessed with some very good referees who are capable of refereeing finals. The performances of Marius Jonker and Jaco Peyper in the semi-finals are testimony to this.’
Lawrence will be helped by assistants Stefan Breytenbach and Christi du Preez while Johan Meuwesen has been appointed as the TMO. Marius Jonker is the reserve referee.
The final will kick off at 17:00.
