Lions bolster squad

The Lions have already made several signings during the off-season as they head into next year’s Super Rugby campaign.

It’s been reported that seven young players have joined the Currie Cup champions since the end of the domestic season.

The Cronje brothers, halfback pair Guy and Ross, have left the Sharks for the move to Johannesburg. The 22-year-old twins from Michaelhouse have been in the KZN structures since 2006, but after a lack of senior opportunities, they’ve decided to move on. This takes the count of former Sharks players in the Lions squad to seven, as the likes of Pat Cilliers, Michael Rhodes, Waylon Murray and Warren Whiteley have all made the same transfer recently.

The Lions have also recruited a second set of brothers in scrumhalf Whestley and centre Bradley Moolman, who represented the Leopards and Bulls U21s respectively this year. Other signings include Maties duo lock Stephan Greef and hooker Callie Visagie while lock Hendrik Roodt also joins after spending the year with Griquas.

Sounds like one of those supporters who pretends he has all the solutions and really wishes he had the opportunity to set Rassie and co. straight.

The ability to reason doesn’t seem like a common trait among Keo bloggers.

It’s gotten to the stage where grant wants the reserve loose-forward for Namibia (yes, the same team that got hammered in the World Cup by everyone) to be the starting openside for the Stormers, because it’s more important to have a player who claims to be a specialist on the field, then to play someone who is effective.

    I pity the fool.

    6. Louw

    @hendrikp(hendrikp)-255: Play the Sarries guy?

Look at the Stormers we get quite desperate, but Grant is an emotional prima Donna that sounds like a stuck record, regurgitating the same thing over and over and over and over and over

  • 259.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

Pieter Louw was doing an excellent job as a fetcher until this year when he struggled with injuries.

    Why should that change??

I still rate the guy very highly.

For me he shoudl play 6, with Vermeulen and Schalla playing 7 & 8 or 8 & 7, doesn’t matter.

Koster, NFW, Kolisi and co can come through gradually. On rotation.

    That’s how i see it,

Pity Vermuelen got injured before the World Cup. Could have given Spies a run for his money.
Really would love to know why PDV favoured Spies so much. Must have been Vic and Du Preez influence.

No just a mate of mine who is quite plugged in through his work to the WPRU.

No one is saying anything about the new coach saga. Apparently there’s some meeting tomorrow, national one I think so they may make some decisions there and we may hear something.

    Then again, maybe not :)

Funny how some can personally insult a certain player on a daily basis for years but can’t tolerate any criticism of another certain player.

Man, John Smit is a thousand times the man Luke Watson will ever be.

    My opinion.

    Entitled to it.

Don’t even bother trying to change it, heard it all before.

    Deal with it.

    Thanks.

If i were a lions supporter i wouldn’t be too stoked with those acquisitions. Just hope mapoe can stay injury free, he looks a quality player. Need some more boeuf in the props. Maybe heinke can be lured back from ireland?

John Smit and Victor Matfield were given a really nice send-off at the SARU awards. May both go on to achieve other professional milestones wherever their careers take them. True South African rugby heroes.

Hendrik roodt is a solid gain for the lions, wonder if jean deysel will stay at lock for sharks considering they have kankowski, alberts, daniel, coetzee etc

  • 288.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

@frozen wolf(frozen wolf)-287: kankowski is the weak link in that lot, closely followed by Daniel.

Of those loose forwards I’d play:

    8 Alberts
    7 Deysel
    6 Daniel

however the Sharks DESPERATELY need a true fetcher in the mould of Brussow or Pocock. Daniel just doesn’t do it in this regard.
