Wallabies to host Wales, Scots

The Wallabies will face Wales and Scotland during the June Test series next year.

Wales will tour Australia for a three-Test series while Scotland will make a trip for their first fixture against the Wallabies in two years.

The Wallabies last faced Wales in the recent World Cup third-place play-off, which they won 21-18 in Auckland. They will face Wales again during their end-of-year tour to Europe on 3 December.

‘A return to a three-Test series as we will play against Wales is an opportunity to build anticipation, excitement and momentum during the course of the tour,’ said ARU boss John O’Neill.

‘It is a long time since we have had that opportunity, to experience a heavyweight northern hemisphere opponent in our backyard for three Tests. I’m delighted too that Wales will be that opponent in 2012. I think all Australians understand what the Welsh are capable of in terms of exciting and attacking rugby.’

The last time the Wallabies played against Scotland, they were beaten 9-8 in Edinburgh in 2009 which broke a 27-year losing streak. The once-off Test will be played in Newcastle, which is known as rugby league country.

‘Newcastle has a wonderful history as a nursery for Wallabies stars, the most recent of them being Luke Burgess,’ said O’Neill. ‘So to take a Test to the area is a fitting reward for the contribution Newcastle and the region has made over a long period of time.’

Wallabies’ in-bound 2012 Tests:
5 June: Wallabies vs Scotland, Newcastle
9 June: Wallabies vs Wales, Brisbane
16 June: Wallabies vs Wales, Melbourne
23 June: Wallabies vs Wales, Sydney
