Reason to smile

Schalk Burger, the 2011 SA Player of the Year, should be the cornerstone of the Springbok side in 2012 and beyond.

Burger, who first played for the Boks in a 2003 World Cup match against Georgia, enjoyed an outstanding tournament in New Zealand, exhibiting the same abrasive energy that marked him as a 20-year-old debutant. He also made use of the experience he’s accumulated over 60-plus Tests, as well as some recently acquired skills, to leave a lasting impression.

The next Bok coach will face the challenge of building a new team and a new leadership group. Burger is certain to be one of the pillars, if not a strong candidate for the captaincy itself. Some tough decisions will need to be made by the coach, and the ageing veterans may need to make way for the promising youngsters, but a clever man-manager will realise that Burger is the kind of player he can build his new team around.

– We analyse the Springboks’ World Cup campaign and rate all the players

Richie McCaw has a phenomenal playing record, but McCaw the player is even more impressive

– We review all 48 matches of the 2011 World Cup

– The minnows made progress at the recent World Cup despite an unfair playing field

– Jon Cardinelli chronicles some of the World Cup adventures enjoyed by the SA Rugby magazine team during a seven-week sojourn to New Zealand’s rugby-mad North Island

It’s not a complete injustice. It’s happened many times before where players A is selected over player B, and certain types of fans throw tantrums about it. And it will happen many times more, in every country.

That’s the way rugby is, a team game, with a coach having to make tough decisions and balance much more than just who the fans think is currently playing better.

Oh and another thing to Ollieshampoo, Grant and all you other lunatics. It’s *YOU* guys who are carrying on, rather pathetically, about Smit. You’re incapable of letting go? Just so I know, how long can I expect you guys to bear grudges?

For the sakes of your keyboards, which must be covered in spittle and dented in the extreme, perhaps time to move on?

A site where the only other bloggers the patient would have to communicate with (after being ignored by the previous 474 inhabitants) would be the dribbling ramblings of a rabid old dog and the nauseating dutiful acceptance of his blood brother till the very cyber end JustBuggery…

That is a fair point, but the non-selection of Bismarck was a complete injustice. You are correct that fans have subjective views, but this was a completely berserk decision. In fact, PdV had selected Bismarck to start at hooker two years ago already, forcing Smit out to 3, and resulting in the best set of results under his tenure, so what happened that Smit was able to start ahead of Bismarck when he was 2 years older after a set of terrible results with a pattern of six straight defeats under Australia.

It was a terrible decision and a total injustice. I tell you what I will ask you a very simple question: Do you believe even as a Smit supporter that Smit was a better player than Bismarck?

It was a complete injustice to Bismarck, and in fact to anyone who is passed over for someone that is not as good as them. Its pisspoort Smit had his moment in the sun, and instead now Bismarck time will have come and gone, he will never be in the this sort of commanding form in 4 years time.

I’m yet to see one person on this entire site stating that… the argument is whether he is the sole reason the Boks lost the 2011 RWC… much like blaming the ref… is as much subjective ignorance as one expects from fools on this site!

That kind of ‘illogic’ is what will keep the Boks from learning from their actual short-comings and the real reason they lost…

    -two missed penalties
-having only one solution to Pocock namely including Brussouw
-failure to adapt to the ref’s ‘non policing’ of the break-downs after the second half and protect own ball with powerful cleaning out on own ball and counter-rucking on opposition ball
-heading into the last 20 minutes with over 70% of possession and territory (unheard of) not one attempt to take the several drop-goal opportunities… just persisting with blunt attack from backs and forwards against the best defensive stats in a RWC 1/4 final
-within the above they failed to even try and rolling maul from 5 out
-winning 30% of Australian LO ball, they resisted reverting back to a more tactical kicking game.

One would have thought that with Bismark, Alberts, Hougaard all coming onto the field with 30 minutes to go they’d be just the tonic for some impact… they simply were not, they missed tackles, failed to breach the advantage line and they made not one line-break… and the foolish swinging ball left-and-right continued until they lost!

But if you want to continue on like the rabid old dog and that other over-emotional fruit-cake… continue on…

Carry on defending that punk of a self centered captain of yours, the favoritist outright BLINDNESS of selecting that self centered bullshit is EXACTLY what destroyed Boks out the WC .., and THAT is IT..,

pathetic cowardly arselick cowards UP that selfish fatfucks backside looking for ALL manner of excuses and justifications outside of the ONE SOLE reason why Boks lost staring them in their condoning cowardly compromising faces…

There were MANY ifs and buts and coulda’s and shoulda’s about that game, legions of them.., like a blind as bat cowardly creep IRB stooge ref for one, or a useless strategy of having the blunt instrument non effective battering ram Burger do ALL the solo runs and ball carries to never never land, or the missed drop by Lambie, the forward pass by JDV, the missed collect by FdP over the line from a Bismark charge down, the inability of Burger to carry the ball over under the posts having FAILED again to carry it through the Aussie defensive line and have it ripped off him on the ground, the non effect of Brussow who was injury ridden before he started and who failed to protect same numbskull Burger from getting manhandled in front of his own post gifting Aussie the softest try against run of play they could possibly have dreamt of, thousands of shoulda, woulda and coulda reasons WHY Boks lost that game…, EXCEPT for the ONE SOLE shoulda woulda reason… And THAT sole reason was the ONE reason that ACTUALLY would have brought the bacon home…

Had Boks NOT gambled and COMPROMISED by playing their WEAK starters first, SMIT, SPIES, FDP, and elected to play their STRONG vanguard from kick off BISMARK, ALBERTS, HOUGAARD, It would have been an absolute whitewash and Aussie would NEVER have been ANYWHERE in that game…

THOSE are the telling shoulda woulda and coulda’s that WOULD have resulted in a RESOUNDING bok victory, and NONE of the other compromised cowardly arsecreep excuses would have EVER come into effect…

Suck it up and JUSTIFY the lame f’ng cowardly and COMPROMISED decision to play a slow ineffective self seeking Smit over a rampaging raring to go balls to the wall Bismark till nanny wipes your pathetic sniveling Smitty wet eyes and chickensh’t arses,,.. The FACTS remain what they are…, the WRONG decision to play Smit ahead of Bismark is what stuffed the Boks out the world cup.., that decision ALONE is what destroyed the Boks chances and NONE nor ANY of all the other prevailing excuses or compromising justified shoulda coulda or woulda reasons whatsoever!

If Bismarck is better then Smit, and you as a supporter of Smit acknowledge that is uncontestable, then that is exactly why so many ppl are so furious.

That is the entire matter is a nutshell.

At the top level its a matter of millimetres and by not selecting your best players to play as long as possible, you give the team a competitive disadvantage, and yes one player can make a difference, a massive difference even. And for that there are two ppl to blame, PdV for not selecting Bismack and Smit for not standing aside for the team as he did two years ago.
