Reason to smile

Schalk Burger, the 2011 SA Player of the Year, should be the cornerstone of the Springbok side in 2012 and beyond.
Burger, who first played for the Boks in a 2003 World Cup match against Georgia, enjoyed an outstanding tournament in New Zealand, exhibiting the same abrasive energy that marked him as a 20-year-old debutant. He also made use of the experience he’s accumulated over 60-plus Tests, as well as some recently acquired skills, to leave a lasting impression.
The next Bok coach will face the challenge of building a new team and a new leadership group. Burger is certain to be one of the pillars, if not a strong candidate for the captaincy itself. Some tough decisions will need to be made by the coach, and the ageing veterans may need to make way for the promising youngsters, but a clever man-manager will realise that Burger is the kind of player he can build his new team around.
Also in the new issue of SA Rugby magazine, on sale this week:
– We analyse the Springboks’ World Cup campaign and rate all the players
– Why the Springboks must adapt their game plan in order to achieve consistent success
– Richie McCaw has a phenomenal playing record, but McCaw the player is even more impressive

– We review all 48 matches of the 2011 World Cup
– The minnows made progress at the recent World Cup despite an unfair playing field
– Jon Cardinelli chronicles some of the World Cup adventures enjoyed by the SA Rugby magazine team during a seven-week sojourn to New Zealand’s rugby-mad North Island
– The SA U18 Sevens’ success at the Commonwealth Youth Games bodes well for the 2016 Olympic Games

@G10 – 646,
Fair point. I felt that they were poor. I expected more from the returning Boks.
8 Nov 2011, 08:09 am
@grant10(grant10)-646: hey i kid you not.
jellyfish are incredible creatures
8 Nov 2011, 08:10 am
@650 Ollie le roux,
I am not doubting that I am a Smit fan. Always was, always will be. I also did say before the QF’s and after the Wales game that Bissy is having more of an impact on the game and should start.
You are very lucky to have hindsight to hide behind. All you bloggers were predicting a Sharks QF exit versus the Irish. None of you predicted anything about an exit to the Aussies. You forget that.
8 Nov 2011, 08:10 am
@652 Staal – carefull.
Ollie le roux will start swearing
8 Nov 2011, 08:12 am
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-576: Backs were never brought into the game …..
You speak such massive shite its quite unreal. If you watched the game you would have seen that it was 2 backs that both should have scored tries if not for forward passes and knock ons …
you fool ..
8 Nov 2011, 08:14 am
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-647: Boks got 2 home games to start off with.
8 Nov 2011, 08:15 am
Dr Dre, – 655,
He is really Ollie Le Roux masking as Ashampoopaloo.
Phonetically it is similar, and their hatred for Smit confirms this belief.
8 Nov 2011, 08:16 am
Did you see ‘em talkin’ ’bout it on the web keo
Could your eyes believe the writing on the blog?
Did that voice inside you say I’ve seen it all before?
It’s like Deja Vu all over again
Day by day I hear the voices rising?
Started with a whisper like it did before?
Day by day they insult the truth by lying
Pick apart the players cause their lives are such a bore…
with apologies to John Fogerty

@grant10(grant10)-649:
thats just the most ridiculous statement ever….
8 Nov 2011, 08:18 am
its these SAME Guppieyuppie SharkieVarkie neanderthal idiots who are STILL singing the Teichman chorus about how Mallet fckd up in 99, least Mallet made it to the semi extra time WITHOUT his captain and his No.1 fly half.
This time was EXACTLY same fckup COMPROMISE .. But in Reverse!!
This time by CARRYING this aura arsehole self seeking schmuck TOO f’ng FAR, Boks SOLD OUT!!
WHERE exactly did this sentimental bullshit hogwash ACTUALLY Get the Boks… OUT the WC on their EAR and on the plane HOME to play in a watered down CC’ THAT’S WHERE the COMPROMISE of playing Smit over Bismark got the Boks…
And any dumb fck SharkieVarkie Smitty arselick apologists who is STILL thinking anything to the contrary is ABSOLUTELY blinded by his fucked up loyalty just as PdV was and is STILL Fckd in the head!!
Sorry to have to tell you so f’ng BLUNTLY.. Because you IDIOTS don’t wanna open up your Smitty condoned cocoon eyes.!!
8 Nov 2011, 08:18 am
@659 – au revoir,
Its just emotional from G10. Thats all. He has no calmed down yet after the QF exit.
He is normally very sensible and factual. This will return eventually, but for now, we need to let him rant like Ollie Le Roux for a bit.
8 Nov 2011, 08:20 am
@660 – Ollie Ollie Ollie,
Are you going to copy and paste this piece into your article on Friday?
Are you taking journalism lessons from Stuart Barnes?
8 Nov 2011, 08:21 am
@grant10(grant10)-644:
Actually it doesn’t really bother me that much at all… poor decision-making in the last 30 minutes LOST the game and they simply persisted with YOUR call for ball-in-hand till the very score-less end, without Smit and Matfield there…
I’ve got a life… I’ve not lost a wink of sleep over it… you and the rabid old dog on the other hand have started your EVERY day howling and moaning with thousands of repetitive posts… EVERY day since the exit…
Life must suck for you two!
8 Nov 2011, 08:21 am
@BULLET(BULLET)-657: Agreed. I have said before that he needs to give himself over to Eskom so that they can stick a cable up his bum to harness all that swirling, dark and confused energy in his mind and use it to power south africa.

a little positivity never killed no one…

@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-660: You are an utter fool. Time and time again you bury yourself with your rabid thoughts and confused mindless tripe you type here.
You are the fool on the hill that the Beatles wrote about!

@dr dre(dr dre)-667:
Say no to shamoo.
Insist on REAL poo
8 Nov 2011, 08:26 am
farken disgracethat Plod
Legacy farked
a lesson to us all
He talked a good game….team first, etc
when it came right down to it his snout was so deep in his own gravy train sense of self worth he showed his true self ego colours…..and doomed us all.
8 Nov 2011, 08:27 am
@Helen(Helen)-669: A sham is indeed the brand of poo he peddles.
A sham poo peddlar. Sad.
8 Nov 2011, 08:29 am
@grant10(grant10)-670:
Dude, take a chill pill and get over it, ok?
Fact is that we were 2 poor ref decisions away from making history with this team you cuss every single minute of every day.
Things could’ve worked out very differently and I believe we had the right team on the park, but were just tripped up by a ref that denied us our dues.
Considering that, if we had lost to the kiwis in the semi, we would’ve been proud of our team.
8 Nov 2011, 08:30 am
@Helen(Helen)-668: This is for WP, right?
8 Nov 2011, 08:32 am
@grant10(grant10)-670: John did not have a bad world cup at all and Bissie and the other impact players were excellent when deployed.
No, John did not lose us the world cup and neither did the tactics on the day.
The gameplan was effective with us hammering the Aussies!
The referee was DIABOLICAL (I have watched the game quite a few times now) AND a few players made huge mistakes when faced with clear scoring opportunities which the team and game plan provided.
You are a broken record fool and every day your metamorphosis to ultimate fool is nearer completion.
Sham poo is still the king! You are close old sport.
8 Nov 2011, 08:33 am
Ho hum.
Same kak same culprits.
8 Nov 2011, 08:34 am
@grant10(grant10)-670:
Grant, I think you need to consider the alternatives.
Plod was probably our best coach since readmission.
During his tenure, SA’s reputation soared way beyond what we ever thought possible. There were no racial, provincial or off-the-field incidents and our discipline (rules and foul play) exceeded even our worst critic’s expectations. Plod was a great ambassador for the game and yes, we didn’t win, but we certainly won the hearts of the world under Plod.
And, keep in mind Plod could easily have made sure that Bissy is not even in the squad, let alone his replacement!
Also, as far as pure hooker duties are concerned, Smit was probably the better player.
Bissy offered more beyond the scope of the position, but when you play finals rugby, you want to focus on doing the basics well, which Smit did exceptionally well.
8 Nov 2011, 08:35 am
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-628: Burger is twice the player Alberts is. He was everywhere against Australia and easily the Boks best player. Alberts looks spectacular, but just doesn’t keep up with the play in the same way Burger does. Its a pretty tough job doing well in the back row when you effectively only have 2 because Spies is just swanning around doing nothing, Plus Plod adding to the all round slowness and ineffectiveness of the pack.
Burger is not a leader, but he is essential to the Boks immediate future.
8 Nov 2011, 08:35 am
Sorry, Freudian slip…… best CAPTAIN, not coach
8 Nov 2011, 08:37 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-673:
No, for WP I’d go with a team that includes Jerome Paarwater, Chester Williams, Breyton Paulse and Bolla Conradie
8 Nov 2011, 08:38 am
@Helen(Helen)-676: Agree.
I insist that our players and gameplan was a word cup winning recipe.
Given the opportunity for a final with NZ … I think that we would have been in with a good chance of winning.
Properly F*ck the IRB for delivering such corruptness to the competition.
8 Nov 2011, 08:39 am
@HongKongSlong(HongKongSlong)-677: Burger can’t do what Alberts does. He can’t crash across the gain line, making 5 or 10 extra meters every time, dragging three players with him. Burger pulls a nasty face before turning his back on the tackler. And then he collapses on the very spot the tackle was initially attempted. Every time, without fail.
8 Nov 2011, 08:41 am
@Helen(Helen)-679:
You could have added Thinus Linee there as well …
Is Rassie currently Allister’s boss the WP setup?
8 Nov 2011, 08:41 am
@Helen(Helen)-679: Well, 11 out of the 14 names on your list are from WP.
Let’s try again, shall we?
8 Nov 2011, 08:42 am
@grant10(grant10)-670:
Grant, you need to respect a player that gave his all and did what he could to win.
Other than spitting fire on here every day, what have you done to make sure we win?
John Smit is a legend.
I was also calling for Bissy to start some of the big games, but it was a close call and the coach did what he thought was best at the time. There is no guarantee that we would’ve won with Bissy on the park. We don’t know if he’d have another brainfart and throw in like someone in the blind retards darts derby
8 Nov 2011, 08:43 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-683:
Ja, I know, it is a sad day….
BUT, we are sitting with some quality coaches in the cape, just none with the posture of a head coach like Mitchell
8 Nov 2011, 08:45 am
@Sheriff(Sheriff)-682:
Rassie is not really his boss.
Just because AC makes Rassie’s first cup of coffee in the morning and rubs his feet after a long day in the sharp newlands sun, doesn’t mean that Rassie’s his boss.
Oh, and what about Deon Kayser and Quinton Davids??
8 Nov 2011, 08:48 am
@Helen(Helen)-686:
No, Kayser played for the Sharks. Are you aware of this?
Maybe you considered other factors when suggesting him.
Why do you find the Cape Cullert accent so repulsive?
8 Nov 2011, 08:48 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-681:
Ja, he is a one dimensional runner.
What I liked about him at the RWC was that he started toying with the idea of offloading in or just before the tackle. Mostly, that was when Vic yelled “pass die bal, doos!”…..
8 Nov 2011, 08:49 am
@Sheriff(Sheriff)-687:
Oh, I thought we were listing cullards… my mistake.
8 Nov 2011, 08:51 am
@dr dre(dr dre)-680:
I agree.
our gameplan for the qrt final was near-perfect.
If only 2 of the 7 or 8 bad reffing decisions went our way, the picture would’ve looked very differently and our tails would’ve been up for the kiwi clash.
8 Nov 2011, 08:53 am
@grant10(grant10)-670:
“Legacy farked” – in your “mind”, In the “minds” of a few rabid tosspots of a similar lunatic fringe.
50 years from now, John Smit will be remembered as one of the greatest springboks of all time. 50 years from now you’ll (maybe) be remembered as the embarrassing uncle in the family no one wants to talk about – ja, that one.
As for skopskiet – he won’t be remembered at all, beyond perhaps suchlike odes:
Under the spreading chestnut tree
The village idiot sat
Amusing himself by abusing himself
And catching it all in his hat.
8 Nov 2011, 08:54 am
@Helen(Helen)-689:
3 mistakes then:
1- The one you pointed out
2- Not answering the last question
3- The incorrect spelling of ‘cullert’
8 Nov 2011, 08:54 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-681:
ja, but you’re not giving him any credit for what is really a smart move. its actually an inverted turbo reverse which when implemented correctly in fact gains meters forward as opposed to meters backwards.
the guys basically taken a negative manoeuvre endemic to the stormers setup and turned it into a positive set piece and/or open-field play.
8 Nov 2011, 08:55 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-673:
8 Nov 2011, 08:58 am
Nevertheless, I thought the weather in Cape Town was quite nice after it was a bit chilly on Saturday upon arrival.
Banhoek Valley remains one of the most beautiful areas.
The only thing I regret was that I forgot to order the quince juice.
8 Nov 2011, 08:59 am
@Sheriff(Sheriff)-692:
What can I say, I am the world’s only walking, bleeding, eating, drinking mistake…..
8 Nov 2011, 09:05 am
@au revoir mon tout noirs, au revoir…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-693: Ah, I see. So we can expect the Stormers scrum to pack down with their bums facing the opponents pretty soon?
And please no homophobic jokes. Unless they’re really funny.
8 Nov 2011, 09:06 am
@Helen(Helen)-696:
Are we not a bit hard on ourselves now?
It’s not about mistakes, but recovery from. ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again…’ typa-thing
keo.co.za remains one of the key learning platforms in SA and indeed internationally.
Why do you think these kiwis come here day after day, it is with the sole purpose of learning. People want to better themselves.
8 Nov 2011, 09:07 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-681: When the pace steps up against the high quality teams, Alberts just can’t keep up. In a tight slugfest maybe he’s better, but I see him more as a 2nd row, or impact player.
8 Nov 2011, 09:09 am
this Dr Dread is one fckup moron who thinks the sun shines out his self absorbed A. Hole you dumbfck idiotic schmuck need to be taught how LITTLE you actually know you moronic fckup dunce!! Backs were played OUT the game by FdP and Burger taking all 2nd phase ball to the gain line or into the air, hardly EVER did M.Steyn get given latitude to send backs away it was 80% Burger playing first receiver after first phase attack.
As for twatass Bullet talking HINDSIGHT the only cn’ts talking HINDSIGHT are these self same Smitty arselick apologetic idiots who only AFTER the Fact realize that it was absolutely IMPERATIVE that Bismark started over Smit otherwise we were going DOWN .. and so it went EXACTLY down to script… We went DOWN CARRYING SMIT … As I absolutely KNEW we would.. no f’ng hindsight about it ONE LITTLE BIT!!
Furthermore both HKschlong and Katman are correct BOTH of Burger and Alberts were required as well as Bismark,,., because then its a 3 prong forward offensive and NOT solo Burger trying to be suoerman all by himself… Burger was absolutely ineffective attempting to breach the advantage line for 80 minutes solid.. Burger is the duracell bunny rabbit that gets around the park effecting cover tackling but Bismark and Alberts were required to bust the Aussie defense NOT Smit and Spies who are both ineffective in the loose.
