Schalk Burger, the 2011 SA Player of the Year, should be the cornerstone of the Springbok side in 2012 and beyond.
Burger, who first played for the Boks in a 2003 World Cup match against Georgia, enjoyed an outstanding tournament in New Zealand, exhibiting the same abrasive energy that marked him as a 20-year-old debutant. He also made use of the experience he’s accumulated over 60-plus Tests, as well as some recently acquired skills, to leave a lasting impression.
The next Bok coach will face the challenge of building a new team and a new leadership group. Burger is certain to be one of the pillars, if not a strong candidate for the captaincy itself. Some tough decisions will need to be made by the coach, and the ageing veterans may need to make way for the promising youngsters, but a clever man-manager will realise that Burger is the kind of player he can build his new team around.

It pains me to think that we have probably not yet learned 100% from the last 4 years.
While I have also been guilty of probably letting sentimentalism guide me (my beliefs in John Smit), i am happy to acknowledge that many many mistakes were made. Now we have to learn from them:
1) The best players must play in their best positions, end of story. We must never weaken a position to supposedly strengthen another. IE, we must not move a blindside to openside, a fb to fh etc etc.
2) We need a specialist open side flanker who plays to the ball (fetcher). Brussouw is the best in the country for that.
3) We need a flyhalf who is prepared to take the ball flat and get our centres on the front foot. We can no longer ever have a fly half who is scared of getting his backs running at the advangate line.
4) We do need to pick a Captain who will dominate his position for the next 4 year

BULLET – Agree. That is exactly what White did. PDV almost got it right, but failed with his selections!!!
It is such a shame the Boks messed up this RWC we had our best chance ever of winning back to back RWCs!! Loyalty to Smit, FDP, Spies destroyed our chances. All PDV had to do was start with his super subs and have Smit,FDP,SPies on the bench!!. Also losing F Steyn was to the Boks a bigger loss than Carter was to the ABs. F Steyn would have slotted those 2 long range penalties, plus he got the Bok backline running by himself!!!

So how can you choose a player to be captain who is not assured of a start in the boks… but you say you can’t have burger as a captain because in your opinion he is not assured of a start…?

When Stormers WP gave Burger the captaincy is when they lost both the S14 IN 2010 AND S15 2011. OR CC both times we lost under his dumb fck derailed decision making and vokmavoort mayhem into nowhere.! JdV did FAR FAR better till they took it away from him to give to Burger. We only Won under JdV till Burger took over which is when we started LOSING.. Just like we LOST under Smit EVERY F’NG GAME for 2 whole YEARS!!
