Former Bok flank murdered

Former Bok flank murdered

Solly Tyibilika was shot and killed in Cape Town on Saturday night.

The news broke via Twitter on Sunday that the 32-year-old Tyibilika had been murdered on Saturday. Supersport commentator Kaunda Ntunja said on his Twitter account: ‘Makhaya Jack [a former SARU player and currently a Supersport commentator] has just come from Sollys home in PE and he has confirmed…Solly Tyibilika has passed away.’

It has now been confirmed that Tyibilika was shot at a tavern in the Cape Town township of Gugulethu. Police confirmed a shooting but had not formally identified the victim on Saturday night.

A witness from the scene told the Daily Voice: ‘This was not a robbery because they left all the other patrons alive and killed him – there was no conversation, they just shot him. And Solly clearly didn’t expect it because he didn’t show any sign of fear while sitting there.’

A number of coaches and players have expressed their sadness on social networking sites, and Saru has also released a statement lamenting the loss of an important player.

‘Solly was a trailblazer among black African Springboks and if the reports are correct, to lose him so suddenly and in this brutal manner is very distressing. The casual disregard for life in our society is shocking,’ said Regan Hoskins, president of Saru.

‘His emergence was a demonstration of what can be achieved when talent is combined with opportunity in what is always a very competitive position in Springbok rugby. I remember a very talented player and an immensely likeable young man who rose far and fast to become a Springbok early in his career.’

Tyibilika played eight games for his country, the last of which was as far back as 2006. He struggled to play regularly at Super Rugby level after that, and was until recently coaching the U19A side at Cape Town club Hamiltons.

Times like these make you understand that the feelings we have towards players’on field performances are really irrelevent in the bigger scheme of things.

We get so worked up about 15 guys chasing after an egg shaped ball, but what does it really matter when life itself is at stake?

We really take sport far too seriously.

That said, tomorrow I will be back at it again, bursting a blood vessel at the latest “BIG” rugby story.

When rugby really is no more important than the latest play station game you engaged in over the weekend.

Perspective is the important thing, I guess.

SARU shocked by Bok’s murder Former Springbok shot dead All Black star in drunken spree Cape Town – In the wake of the murder of former Springbok flank, Solly Tyibilika, reports suggest that his death was not an accident.

VIDEO: Rest in Peace Solly Tyibilika

According to the Daily Voice, Tyibilika was at a local drinking hotspot in the New Crossroads township in Gugulethu at around 14:20 on Sunday afternoon when three gunmen walked up behind him while he was drinking and shot him in a rain of gunfire.

“I was in the kitchen when I heard the gunshots, then when I went to check what happened, Solly was injured, but (then) he died on the scene ,” the owner of the shebeen told the tabloid.

The owner could not confirm the number of gunmen who entered the premises.

Another witness recalls how one of the gunmen instructed him to move out of the way and said that Tyibilika was targeted.

“One of them came to me and told me to ‘move to the side’. He said he wasn’t here to shoot me, but Solly who was sitting behind me,” said the unidentified witness.

“I ran and went under the table and then I heard them shooting too many rounds to count.

“After that they left, but I was too scared to move and I could hear him (Tyibilika) struggle to breathe.

“I waited until people came to see what happened and ran to my car and went home.

“This was not a robbery because they left all the other patrons alive and killed him – there was no conversation, they just shot him,” he added.

“And Solly clearly didn’t expect it because he didn’t show any sign of fear while sitting there.”

It is further reported that two other patrons in the shebeen were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Tyibilika, along with Sandile Maqungu and Simon Shumane, were arrested last month after police stopped Tyibilika’s vehicle after noticing he was driving without his headlights switched on, they then found a firearm hidden in his glove compartment.

They appeared in Athlone Magisrates’ Court on October 19, where they were charged with the illegal possession of a firearm. Tyibilika was released on bail of R800. A week after their release, Shumane was fatally gunned down.

Meanwhile, no suspects have been arrested in connection with Tyibilika’s murder, which was confirmed by SAPS spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk.

“Yesterday (Sunday), two unidentified men entered a tavern in a New Crossroads, in Gugulethu, and shot at the people inside,” he said.

“They then ran out and one was seen jumping into a cockroach taxi and another ran in to the direction of KTC.”

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Crime Stop on 086 00 10111.

There are several tragedies here with the shocking death of Solly.

1stly – he never reached his full potential; he would have matured over the years like most players do

2ndly – questionable decisions; if one reads that he was arrested for the illegal possesion of a firearm you get the sense that they came specifically for him, executed him and left

3rdly – And I guess this is the toughest one; one only has one life -it would have been beautiful to see him making a come-back at some stage

    RIP Solly Tyibilika.

I remember Tyibilika’s first Test had tears running down his eyes during the anthem & scored try on debut-the delight on his face was palpable
    Loved the game.Proud Springbok.

His best game was in 2005 vs Australia at Loftus I think. In the 1st half he was immense, covered every blade of that pitch.was weirdly taken off by Jake White which made NO sense whatsoever.he was everywhere.

So a nice versatile utility player.

And if he is a grafter, he can replace Fudge and be most useful indeed. Especially given our need for another lock as backup to Flip and Juandre.

Adongo is a exceptional athlete, like Transie said he was a winger for much of his age group days.Bigger fella, not an ounce of fat on that 112 kg frame.avg accelerattion but very good top end speed much like Spies.

Still learning the intricacies of fwd play though. He is a project type player. He still needs a lot of work but the physical tangibles are there…aplenty.

Don’t expect anything from him from next 12-18months though at superrugby though. But with right coaching,mentoring-he will be a valuable asset to Bulls. At the moment he is still very much a canvas, now real work begins.Naturally gifted athlete tho as said earlier.

Dude, you have a very immature approach to life. Let me set you straight.

The measure of maturity is not wisdom, it is not even good judgement or moral certainty. It is the ability to hold 2 opposing view in tension without falling for the temptation to throw your total weight behind or the other view.

Therefore, be a grown up and realise that there is good in SA rugby as there is bad in SA rugby. The same goes for our opinions of people. Non-one can be ONLY good or ONLY bad. If we are mature we’ll hold these opposing views in tension within ourselves and do justice to both.

A child can only hold one view at a time, we are not children. I have the same issue with Poppa, ET and Grantie. Their views are childish.

You are trying to save the world, but I’d suggest that you grow up first and see the world as grey and not black/white as you do.

    Use it, don’t use it

Your ignorance of black life and the associated arrogance of claiming to know better is despicable in relation to the incident and the memory of Solly Tyibilika.. Let me remind you that your worldview was formed by racist thinking drilled into you by an apartheid government and the protectors of its legacy. SARU remains the latter. I’m devastated, not just because we saw a young life taken too early but also because SA Rugby failed him. Because I have no doubt if Solly was still playing now he wouldn’t of been driving around with illegal firearms in his car and this whole tragic incident could of potentially been avoided… There’s no question he was a talented player, yet he was treated as a political tool by the faceless cowards in charge. FFS we had Jake White come out and say in 2006 and basically say Solly was only in the team for “transformation” reasons, I mean how is that supposed to make a guy feel coming from your own coach? Knowing your only in the team because of your skin colour? How can your teammates respect you?

Now anybody who has half a brain knows his stint at the Lions was not all what it seemed and it must of been the final straw for him. The saddest thing is solly wasn’t the first and he certainly won’t be the last one, these guys are thrown in after only a handful of games unprepared and unready and then cast out as soon as it doesn’t work out most never to be heard again. How about some accountability from SARU rather than the usual generic press release?

Your ‘agenda’ and self importance is just way too important for you. One day you too will understadn that LIFE is precious and when it comes to an end, it is NOT an opportunity for you to get some mileage and grind axes. You, my friend, know nothing about life, me, reaching out, being black. Cut your losses and get out of this argument, because you are heading for a quick and short putting-in-place.

@Steel Shark(Steel Shark)-109: white used solly as his pawn to get away from picking luke, who was arguably the best opensider in the country in 2006.

    Watson: I support transformation

Bok reject Luke Watson does not want to be perceived as a “victim” of transformation.

On Monday, Bok coach Jake White said he could not include the Vodacom Western Province captain in the team ahead of Saturday’s clash against the All Blacks, because “we need to be honest about the sensitivities of the make-up of the team.”

“We have got a guy like Solly [Tyibilika] and we need to show that transformation is happening in our country,” White said.

Watson said he had not been distracted by the massive controversy and was concentrating on Western Province’s match against the Valke in Brakpan tomorrow.

“I don’t want to be seen as a victim of transformation,” he told the Cape Times on Thursday. “I’m a child and supporter of transformation.”

Having read all the above comments…

‘No single, essential difference separates human beings from other animals.’ So began a feature article on evolution in TIME magazine (‘How Man Began’, March 14, 1994). The more I thought about this sweeping statement the more I began to warm to it.

For example, like humans, apes have well formed rational faculties. Their ability to develop an argument, follow a line of logic, draw conclusions and frame hypotheses is quite remarkable.

Also like humans, apes have a marked faculty for language. (This, of course, is intertwined with their powers of reason.) Their vocabulary is enormous, their grammar complex, and their conversations deep and meaningful.

The apes’ ability to codify language in writing is further proof of their close relationship to humans. In this respect, it was most gratifying to see the number of apes who wrote to TIME magazine in response to the article on ‘How Man Began’. I was particularly interested to follow the line of reasoning of the orang-utan who argued that apes had evolved from humans, not vice versa.

Like humans, apes also have a strong spirit of inquiry. Their research in the fields of astronomy, mathematics, medicine and physics is noteworthy.

Apes also (again, like humans) yearn for meaning in life. This is why they devote so much of their time to philosophy, theology and ethics. The religious sentiments and practices of all apes can be traced back to their intense and endless quest for meaning.

Apes are concerned about questions not only of origin but also of destiny. The best proof I can offer for this claim is the maxim by one famous ape philosopher who said, ‘Whether my life leads ultimately to the dirt or to the Judgment, either way, I’ve got a problem.’

Apes also have, like humans, a refined aesthetic sense. They admire beauty and long to surround themselves with it. When an ape cultivates a garden, puts flowers in a vase, or hangs up a painting, what is it doing if not expressing a love of beauty?

Again like humans, apes have a strong creative impulse. This is seen in their poetry, painting, dance, drama and music. To a lesser extent their creativity is also evident in the way they gather in weekly craft groups to weave baskets, spin wool, knit shawls, and cover photo albums.

The sense of humour shared by all apes is another proof of their close kinship to humans. Their delight in the ridiculous and their love of a good laugh is plain from the popular ape jokes they tell.

    … en so aan….

imo… lots of apes registered here on Keo….

yes, apartheid was despicable, indefensible, an abomination…

yes.. you were deprived of your freedom and rights and land and opportunities and eduction and many other things… for which we can all rightly condemn the apartheid government…

how people reacted to the injustice and abuse and deprivation had everything to do with their own personal dignity….

The other two accused in Solly’s unlicensed/concealed firearm case were also killed by gunshot – both within the last three weeks. Add to that the fact that the shebeen gunmen told patrons to move aside as they only had business with Solly, and it starts to sound like someone lived by the sword.

You do have some valid points,as much as we mourn the death of Solomzi “Solly” Tyibilika, let us not lose sight of his ill treatment by SA Rugby in general. There are more white players who behaved a lot worse than Solly but they got help their coaches were patient with their boozing and their other off field shenanigans.SA Rugby at large let Solly down and I can assure you Solly is not the only one. This is a legacy of apartheid and we still have a long way to go before we can trully say we have turned things around.I have pasted an article that shows two of Solly’s friends were also gunned down, one of them also had potential to become a sports star.

Cape Town – The murder of former Springbok player Solly Tyibilika at a Cape Town tavern on Sunday came just days after two of his friends were also shot dead, The Cape Times reported on Tuesday.

Simon Dan Shumane, 25, and Sandile Magunqu, 27, were arrested together with Tyibilika on October 17 when police found a 9mm pistol in their car, the newspaper reported.

Gugulethu police had stopped the car when they saw it driving slowly at night with its headlights switched off.

Tyibilika, Shumane and Magunqu appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court two days later and were released on bail of R800 each. They were expected to return to court on January 26.

However, Magunqu was shot dead along Tom Street in Gugulethu and Shumane was shot dead a week later.

Shumane was part of the Western Province’s Rugby Academy in 2004 and was a promising cricketer in his teens.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk told the newspaper that he could not confirm whether the murders were linked.

“Currently the cases are being investigated separately, but should a link be found, the investigators will combine the cases,” he said.

For all those thinking Solly was maybe involved in criminal activity or something. Tyibilika & his other mates had no criminal records. All were former sportstars to a certain level. There was ONE gun found amongst all 3 of them yes illegal but no big arsenal etc

I will tell you what most likely happened: Nothing criminal at all. If you have lived/hang out in the locations/townships and especially in taverns etc one will come into contact with people who are bad news & are resentful or who you are(sports stars/model C boys etc) and already you are vulnerable. Some of these people are the neighbourhood hoodlum, gun wielding nothing to lose types. And all it takes is a argument/misunderstanding when drunk or taking someone’s girl to lose your life in that environment. You get into a scuffle,f*ck somebody up while your boys jump for you etc then ALL of you are targets.Threats are made against your lives, get a weapon to protect yourselves-cheap in the hood(probably illegal).

You get caught on your lonesome….And its over for you. As all 3 were executed.

If you understand the dynamics that exist in township then this story will make sense.
