Former Bok flank murdered

Former Bok flank murdered

Solly Tyibilika was shot and killed in Cape Town on Saturday night.

The news broke via Twitter on Sunday that the 32-year-old Tyibilika had been murdered on Saturday. Supersport commentator Kaunda Ntunja said on his Twitter account: ‘Makhaya Jack [a former SARU player and currently a Supersport commentator] has just come from Sollys home in PE and he has confirmed…Solly Tyibilika has passed away.’

It has now been confirmed that Tyibilika was shot at a tavern in the Cape Town township of Gugulethu. Police confirmed a shooting but had not formally identified the victim on Saturday night.

A witness from the scene told the Daily Voice: ‘This was not a robbery because they left all the other patrons alive and killed him – there was no conversation, they just shot him. And Solly clearly didn’t expect it because he didn’t show any sign of fear while sitting there.’

A number of coaches and players have expressed their sadness on social networking sites, and Saru has also released a statement lamenting the loss of an important player.

‘Solly was a trailblazer among black African Springboks and if the reports are correct, to lose him so suddenly and in this brutal manner is very distressing. The casual disregard for life in our society is shocking,’ said Regan Hoskins, president of Saru.

‘His emergence was a demonstration of what can be achieved when talent is combined with opportunity in what is always a very competitive position in Springbok rugby. I remember a very talented player and an immensely likeable young man who rose far and fast to become a Springbok early in his career.’

Tyibilika played eight games for his country, the last of which was as far back as 2006. He struggled to play regularly at Super Rugby level after that, and was until recently coaching the U19A side at Cape Town club Hamiltons.

Having read all the above comments…

‘No single, essential difference separates human beings from other animals.’ So began a feature article on evolution in TIME magazine (‘How Man Began’, March 14, 1994). The more I thought about this sweeping statement the more I began to warm to it.

For example, like humans, apes have well formed rational faculties. Their ability to develop an argument, follow a line of logic, draw conclusions and frame hypotheses is quite remarkable.

Also like humans, apes have a marked faculty for language. (This, of course, is intertwined with their powers of reason.) Their vocabulary is enormous, their grammar complex, and their conversations deep and meaningful.

The apes’ ability to codify language in writing is further proof of their close relationship to humans. In this respect, it was most gratifying to see the number of apes who wrote to TIME magazine in response to the article on ‘How Man Began’. I was particularly interested to follow the line of reasoning of the orang-utan who argued that apes had evolved from humans, not vice versa.

Like humans, apes also have a strong spirit of inquiry. Their research in the fields of astronomy, mathematics, medicine and physics is noteworthy.

Apes also (again, like humans) yearn for meaning in life. This is why they devote so much of their time to philosophy, theology and ethics. The religious sentiments and practices of all apes can be traced back to their intense and endless quest for meaning.

Apes are concerned about questions not only of origin but also of destiny. The best proof I can offer for this claim is the maxim by one famous ape philosopher who said, ‘Whether my life leads ultimately to the dirt or to the Judgment, either way, I’ve got a problem.’

Apes also have, like humans, a refined aesthetic sense. They admire beauty and long to surround themselves with it. When an ape cultivates a garden, puts flowers in a vase, or hangs up a painting, what is it doing if not expressing a love of beauty?

Again like humans, apes have a strong creative impulse. This is seen in their poetry, painting, dance, drama and music. To a lesser extent their creativity is also evident in the way they gather in weekly craft groups to weave baskets, spin wool, knit shawls, and cover photo albums.

The sense of humour shared by all apes is another proof of their close kinship to humans. Their delight in the ridiculous and their love of a good laugh is plain from the popular ape jokes they tell.

    … en so aan….

imo… lots of apes registered here on Keo….

    “We were deprived of dignity…”

    as George Benson said…

“No matter what they take from me, they can’t take away my dignity…!” these are very true and wise words…

point being, no one can take away or deprive you of your dignity… you can only give it away or surrender it…

just ask Luthuli, Mandela, Sisulu, Mbeki, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Malcolm X…

yes, apartheid was despicable, indefensible, an abomination…

but all people are defined by their dignity… it characterizes them…

to say you were deprived of dignity is a cop-out like saying the devil made me do it…

yes.. you were deprived of your freedom and rights and land and opportunities and eduction and many other things… for which we can all rightly condemn the apartheid government…

how people reacted to the injustice and abuse and deprivation had everything to do with their own personal dignity….

but the only person who can deprive you of your dignity… is you…

he was a BOK, a lot of people including myself interacted with him personally when he was part of the now-defunct SARU rugby academy at UPE and were proud of what he’s achieved. now this might not mean fokkol to you and you’d rather be up the arse end of john o’neill but that’s you.

if you’re not interested don’t comment on the thread or go to ruggaworld where they only have RUGBY-related articles, oh i see they have an article there on Solly but you didn’t act like a d!ck there did you…peophol.

The other two accused in Solly’s unlicensed/concealed firearm case were also killed by gunshot – both within the last three weeks. Add to that the fact that the shebeen gunmen told patrons to move aside as they only had business with Solly, and it starts to sound like someone lived by the sword.
