Baby Boks head into second phase

Dawie Theron named a 48-man SA U20 provisional squad for the team’s second camp in Stellenbosch, which includes four SA Schools players.

After naming a 100-man training squad for the opening camp hosted in Kimberley earlier this month, Baby Boks head coach Theron has selected a smaller provisional group for a second camp to be held at Stellenbosch University’s brand new Sport Performance Institute.

Ten players who weren’t present in Kimberley have also been invited to Stellenbosch. Four of them – Jan Serfontein, Dries Swanepoel, Siyabonga Tom and Hlanhla Hlungwane – are from this year’s SA Schools side while Guy Alexander, Paul Jordaan, Allan Dell, Steven Kitshoff, Johan Goosen and Kevin Luiters are the other six additions.

‘We’ve always planned to spread the net as far and wide as possible and by inviting the players that missed the camp in Kimberley but have always been on our radar, it gives us even more insight into the depth and talent at our disposal,’ said Theron.

‘Where we played a number of trials matches in Kimberley, this camp will be very different. We’ll be introducing our game plan to the players and will work on position specific training, while also focusing on defensive and attacking structures.

‘With most of the players currently busy with pre-season preparations at their various unions, it would not work to do intense contact sessions, so we will be concentrating more on technical and tactical preparations.’

The camp starts on 27 November until 7 December.
