Board to tackle Bok post

Board to tackle Bok post

The process for appointing a new Springbok coach is top of the agenda in an executive committee meeting of the South African Rugby Union in Cape Town on Thursday.

Among other issues on the table are the proposed six-team Currie Cup, Test match venues for 2012 and the Kings’ planned participation in Super Rugby in 2013, although keo.co.za understands that the Eastern Cape franchise are certainties. That discussion is likely to deal with details around their inclusion, not their inclusion itself.

As for the coaching role, it appears there are pre-determined favourites. Stormers and Western Province coach Allister Coetzee seems the preferred man for the job, with WP director of rugby Rassie Erasmus touted to fill a similar role at national level. There is sure to be discontent among potential suitors if Peter de Villiers’ successor is headhunted (as opposed to the lengthy process of calling for applications and interviewing shortlisted candidates it has followed in the past).

De Villiers has indicated that he will apply for the post, while others like Gert Smal, who coached the Springboks’ forwards to a world title in 2007, has also been mentioned. Smal’s successor Gary Gold last week said he would love the challenge of being the head coach.

World Cup winning coach Jake White has consistently spoken about his desire for another tenure, but others like John Mitchell of the Lions and Heyneke Meyer of the Bulls are unlikely to throw their names into the hat.

After looking at all the possible options: Mallet, Meyer, Rassie, Coetzee, Smal, Mitchell, Drotske, Plumtree and even threw Wayne Smith in the mix, my dream coach would be Ewan Mckenzie.

  • 4.Brads: Reply to this comment

If the head hunting option holds sway, then forget all the denials by the available coaches.

They can write their own terms, which would be a massive change.

  • 5.hendrikp: Reply to this comment

    Gert Smal?

Can’t help but think if they replace Allister Coetzee at the Stormers, they’ll be undoing all the good work they’ve done this season.

That being said, I think the most important role would be that of National Coaching Director. Rassie seems innovative enough.

Long as they don’t give the jobs to some joker with a poor record I’ll be supportive of the person who gets it :)

Kings really had to win the CC 1st division to be considered for the S15. Bulldogs and SWD will add zero to their chances of success at higher level.

Consider that the team who thrashed them in the final will contribute maybe one, two people tops to the Stormers squad. Just a little perspective.

Interesting that Mallett is not mentioned once in this article… He’s just turned down the England job and is heading home to Cape Town…

And also, please explain “There is a growing sense that Stormers and Western Province coach Allister Coetzee is the preferred man for the job, with WP director of rugby Rassie Erasmus touted to fill a similar role at national level.”

Where is this sense growing? Who are these idiots that think this? I reckon this is nothing more than Keo nonsense, I have heard of nothing more than a small minority who think Coetzee is the right man for the job.

Let the Kings fight their way into the competition. They need to prove they are up to the job, it;’s no good them drafting players from other unions thereby diluting the strength of those unions just to force them into the Super comp.

The whole point was to give the Eastern Cape some exposure and access, but they do not have the team (yet) to justify inclusion.

To give it to them under these conditions screams tokenism.

@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-13: I think this is where that stems from and all are valid points to be fair:

“White went on to add that Coetzee’s subsequent accomplishments had proven his readiness for the task.

“The Stormers have finished second on the Super Rugby log twice in the past two years under Allister, something that shouldn’t be shirked at. He’s been groomed by SA Rugby to do the job, and it would be wrong of them not to pick him at the last hurdle again.”

“He’s coached SA ‘A’, SA Under-23, been an assistant Bok coach – how could they not pick him? He’s gone through the ranks and has a list of achievements to show it would be an injustice if they don’t pick him,” White added.

AC should have been appointed Bok coach after White, continuity would have set the Boks up well! Oh well he may/hopefully get the job now.
AC was quoted as saying he would have continued in the Jake White way, post RWC2007,which would have been good!
Maybe he AC will ask Eddie Jones to come on board or even Gert Smal again!!!

Not to mention how many the Sharks have been stealing over the years. Until we can promise them top flight rugby, they will continue to leave, and you lot will continue to say we don’t have the quality players and the vicious circle continues with EP getting punished.

I don’t have a problem with the Kings earning a slot by firstly getting into the premier division and then being competative there for a year or two.

What about the commercial interests of the existing union that will now no longer have a Super Rugby Team?

All because the politicians have some romanticised view of the eastern cape as some unrealised potential as a rugby goldmine of talent??

Let them be strong enough to deserve it. Then they can play. If they are an additional team in a Super 16 comp that’s also fine with me.

If the Kings get into the Premier division and can stay there as one of the top 5 teams then also, I can get behind that.

EP simply also a larger growth potential than say Free State. The Lions have been a picture of medicrity for over a decade.Same with Cheetahs…

Yet the above teams are “traditional big 5″ now purely because they have superrugby status…That allows the teams to have a bigger budget and recruit top quality. yet they STILL havent used that to their fullest potential. Those administrations in those regions even with safety net of superrugby are below par.

Rebels,Force where passed as superrugby teams were passed becasue the regions are large commercial centres. If kings were granted that status pending inclusion in say 2years or so,you cant deny their recruitment powers would change greatly. Its like college football conferences where certain conferences are more illustrious due to greater TV coverage thus more sponsorships,tv money as audience is larger, national coverage etc when a team to moved or negotiates movement to pack 10 in NCAA football…The dynamics of their programme change altogether. Its a big deal.

    Similiar analogy here,

The problem was caused by SARU, when they went out to tender for the 5th Franchise after the Lions/Cheetahs split. They should never have allowed the unions to decide who they wanted to partner with.
When you consider that the EC is the largest and oldest black rugby playing province in SA, it was criminal to exclude them.
As Rossineri says, without an S15 franchise, the region will never attract the top players. Boland, by comparison to EP, is part of a Franchise and a feeder for WP and the Stormers, as you well know.

Pick Mallett with a hope that it can be an eight year run of continuous improvement, but with performance based renewal/termination. Give him clear goals and get out of his way.

That’s what you would do if the objective is sustained rugby success. But that is not the objective, and fans will have to accept more of the dim-witted decision making that made Hoskins and co look so totally incompetent over the last four years.
