Jacobs eyes Cape future

Jacobs eyes Cape future

Adi Jacobs has expressed interest in continuing his career with the Stormers or Boland.

The 31-year-old centre’s 10-year tenure with the Sharks has come to an end after his contract was not renewed. Jacobs has confirmed that he will return to the Cape, where he was born in Kraaifontein, with his family. However, it is not yet known where he will play his rugby.

Jacobs’ told Die Burger that he hopes to join the Stormers or Boland next season.

‘The Cape is my home and I wouldn’t easily say no if the Stormers are interested. I have talked to Boland but haven’t heard back from them yet,’ he said.

Jacobs made 156 appearances for the Sharks since 2001, 71 of them in the Currie Cup and 88 in Super Rugby. He also represented the Bulls and Cats before making the move to Durban.

They were ‘happy’ letting Sadie go ‘assuming’ they still had Jaque (without securing a contract with him) so why pay two huge salaries for 2 centers? Fair enough – but then why assume Jaque would just stay? That came back to bite them in the *** – I reckon I knew Jaque was talking to Japanese clubs before they did.

But to answer your question – no-one you will know.

Without insinuating anything – ok maybe I am – he has not exactly proved to be the most loyal of players in the past. Making assumpitons about keeping him was probably not the brightest of moves.

Some refer to him as Rassie, others, ‘Honest’ Rassie…

A nickname he apparently gained from Cheetahs days already.

For sure – the way his relationship ended with the Lions was not great PR. Don’t know the guy at all though.

Were you serious the other day about Stormers coaches taking their lawyers along to press conferences?

@Tacitus(Deucalion)-53: how has he “NOT proven to be the most loyal player in the past”, by playing his rugby for the same franchise that molded him as a youngster until about 2 years ago?

you insinuations are baseless and churlish in this instance.

Whatever. Signing a contract and then looking for technical loopholes in it in order to pursue a better offer is not exactly the most upstanding of behaviour.

The gained JP du Plessis from the Rebels– he played SA schools 2 years ago and was seen as the next big thing but left for Aus to play league after they offered him a huge contract- he then left for the rebels but is back in CT and played the last few matches for wp under 21. Some people rate him even more than they rate Sadie but lets see how he goes.

Besides that they also have Brache and Burton Claasen but they are still very inexperienced.

Habana may be slower than at his peak in 07′ but the man is NOT slow. He is quicker than 90%(at very least as quick) of the wingers in international rugby.Give Habana enough space he can still finish past like of Engelbrecht,Ndungane,Basson. JJ Engelbrecht now is probably at peak speed wise in career yet he still isnt quicker than Habs NOW.

Some of those analyses you have made are notable/true but one can say the same of say Saders-who have lost SBW,Brad Thorn.Carter & McCaw injury prone-wont last season & Guilford is a mess mentally-alcohol problem etc Yet Saders still odds on favourites

Reds are the only unaffected but have lost their playmaker Cooper to a major injury till midway of S15…A big part of why they won last yr was Genia-Cooper. Dont see Samo making same impact as last yr,at 37 yrs old & look off the pace in RWC onwards.

Bulls having lost Guthro,G.Botha,Bakkies,Matfield,Rossouw,du Preez,J.Pretorius, van den Heever….All the leadership cornerstones as well..Last year they didnt finish in playoff contention(Top6) and didnt make CC playoffs AND currently in process of changing playing pattern…They are much weaker for next yr even with Addition of JJ,Sadie,Cronje etc Rebuilding indeed-Tough year ahead in 2012

He’s a key factor in organising the backline, which is made all the more obvious when he isn’t playing,

Always rated Adi’s play making abilities, exciting to watch. Pity the shoulder injury came at the wrong time but to be honest, he was never really given a fair shot at the no.13 jersey in his career at the Sharks.

Having said that, I dont think WP is the best option for his last few years as they already have Jacque and Juan. Adi should have moved to the Bulls last year and seen out his career there

I looked at the stormers squad and it seems quite strong.. most stormers players had good world cups…

I would actually like to see Bolla Conradie play a few games this year and help mentor Duvenhage…the number 9 shirt is still a worry for me

It would have been nice to hold onto CJ Van Der Linde and Francois Louw…as I think the team would have been competetive with them in there

I would go for this stormers team as my strongest line up but this year alot of rotation will be needed..

    15 Gio Aplon
    14 Gerrard Van Den Heever
    13 Jaque Fourie
    12 Juan De Jongh
    11 Bryan Habana
    10 Peter Grant
    9 Bolla Conradie
    8 Duane Vermeulen
    7 Siya Kolisi
    6 Schalk Burger
    5 Andries Bekker
    4 Rynhard Elstadt
    3 Frans Malherbe
    2 Tiaan Liebenberg
    1 Deon Carstens

    16 Deon Fourie
    17 Steven Kitschoff
    18 Hilton Lobberts
    19 Nick Koster
    20 Dewaldt Duvenhage
    21 Joe Pietersen
    22 Jean De Villiers

    23 S Ntubeni
    24 Brok Harris
    25 De Kock Steenkamp
    26 Ruan Kitschoff
    27 Nic Groom
    28 Burton Francis
    29 Adrian Jacobs
    30 Conrad Janjtes

    31 Wickus Blaauw
    32 Naazim Carr
    33 Louis Schroeder
    34 Gary Van Aswegen
    35 Danie Poolman

Geez mate, I once said you were a sceptic, I withdraw my statement and replace it with ‘downright depressed’. WP has made some sh*t choices insofar as player management goes, but who hasn’t?

On the one hand everyone on the planet wants to give the youngsters a go to prove themselves, but on the other hand, everyone wants to scream if a team doesn’t hold on to its older players.

The new springboks has to come from somewhere, and the Currie Cup just isn’t good enough anymore, all your top players are withdrawn, so you have outstanding youngsters having to play in a second tier competition, in fact playing in a glorified Vodacom Cup.

Fact is, Superrugby is an ideal situation to start off a youngster these days, you always hear about guys being confidence players, which is a ball of ****, ANY player needs to play with confidence, if a youngster isn’t mentally tough enough to handle super rugby off a bench, he probably isn’t ready to play at all.

You misunderstand my concern with WP Rugby.

It is not who is being bought and let go this year, last year or the year before – well not in the sense that you think.

There is quite a difference between contract and player management, and cattle trading – and WP rugby is following the latter example.

It is not who is bought and lost this year, it is the trend WP rugby has followed over the last 6 or 7 years which is clear for anyone who is willing to see, it obviously not working.

I would also recommend you listen to what some of the older ex-WP players are saying about the union, and how the union has lost its identity and culture.

The most important aspect when buying and ‘selling’ players is how it endorses or strengthens the union’s (note not just team or players) character and culture.

WP currently has none, they are just trading cattle.

  • 82.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

@daydreamer(daydreamer)-81: You make a good point.

    BUT……….

It is only an indication of how WEAK the Shark’s midfield strength really is that people are up in arm that Jacobs has left the Sharks. I mean, c’mon, Jacobs is a decent enough player but nothing to get your knickers in a knot over.

The Sharks seriously need to find some centre quality from somewhere. Bosman is useless and Joubert is over the hill big time (the new Oupa now that Terblanche has FINALLY retired).

  • 83.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

There is a turnstile of players leaving the Sharks

    Jacobs
    Murray
    Barritt
    F Steyn
    Pienaar
    S Meyer
    Kockott
    Rhodes
    Cilliers
    Muller
    Sykes
    Mostert
    Strauss
    Adongo

    Retirements: Smit, Terblanche

with very few players of quality replacing them…

    Ludik
    Potgieter
    Joubert
    Bosman
    Skeate
    Hoffman
    Whitehead
    ?
    ?
    ?
    ?
    ?
    ?

At this rate the Sharks will be competing with the Cheetahs and Lions in the bottom half of the S15 next year!

    Word wakker NRU….

im so grateful dead wood is finallly leaving my union, yes terblanche and adi have been great servants and i thank them but its time the sharks started playing some rugby that aint played at my grandfathers pace!!!!! i hope with adi gone this might c the inclusion of JLP more often though i still doubt it, plum clearly doesnt get on with him, and im gonna go back to my usual point, thanks sharks and sa rugby for stuffing around with a talent like barritt who would still be here right now if he wasnt forced to move aside for the adi in 2008!!!!

  • 86.gr8 white: Reply to this comment

@seabiscuit(seabiscuit)-85: I agree fully with you – good servant but since his shoulder injury has not regained his form…was good attack player but lacked in defense department. Also agree on the Brad Barritt point…although he also had his short comings was much stronger on defense and attack wasn’t bad…be it a little one dimensionable. Personally think that it is good to get rid of the old dogs…we will see some new wood sprout…maybe not this year at the Sharks but it will come…Plum is a little conservative!

  • 87.lepel: Reply to this comment

@gr8 white(gr8 white)-86: Sharks should’ve held onto Barritt. I don’t think he’s quite the superstar people thought he was going to be, but he was good. It’s not too long ago that the Sharks had an exciting young centre pairing in Barritt and Murray. They would’ve been 25/26 now… in their prime.

I reckon given time Paul Jordaan and Lindique might form a decent pairing. Better than anything the Sharks have at the moment.

And so say all of us.

I think the Sharks were lucky to make the CC final this year.
They`re forwards orientated game plan is well known to everyone who watched more than 2 matches this year.
They`ve got the weakest mid field in the country, and the worst part is . . . they`re just sticking to what didn`t work in the Neo-Africa series already!

Mark my words they won`t win anything untill they have a better mid field combination. Meyer and Marius will only shine if they play in the Vodacom Cup.
