Cecil Afrika suffered a rib injury during the Springbok Sevens’ win over Japan and could miss day two of the Gold Coast Sevens.
The Blitzboks enjoyed an unbeaten run on day one of the Australian World Series leg as they beat USA, Japan and the hosts to top Pool B. They’ll face France in their Cup quarter-final fixture on Saturday. However, there is bad news following the successful start to the tournament with Cecil Afrika picking up a rib injury.
This is the IRB Sevens Player of the Year’s third injury over a year. He broke his cheekbone against Wales in PE last season, then suffered the same injury against Argentina during a warm-up match in Stellenbosch several months ago.
However, initial calls believe the extent of the damage to Afrika’s ribs is not too severe and head coach Paul Treu hopes his playmaker will be able to feature on day two.
‘He is going for a scan and we will just wait and get feedback from our medical team,’ said Treu. ‘It is better to have him on the park and part of the World Series. I don’t want to preempt things but if he is fit to play and cleared by our medical team then he will definitely be picked.’
