Bronze for Blitzboks
26 Nov 2011
The Springbok Sevens beat Australia 17-5 in the third/fourth play-off while Fiji downed New Zealand 26-12 in the Cup final on day two of the Gold Coast Sevens.
After being thrashed 28-5 by the defending World Series champions on day one, Fiji recorded a 26-12 victory over the Kiwis to claim the top prize – their first Cup triumph in two seasons. Their last tournament win was back in the 2009-2011 campaign in Wellington.
Meanwhile, the Blitzboks dominated the match against the hosts. Chris Dry, South Africa’s star at the tournament, opened the scoring with his seventh try over the two days. Despite being reduced to six men after Bernado Botha was harshly yellow carded for a high tackle, Paul Delport put the Blitzboks 12-0 ahead at the break.
Boom Prinsloo then scored the points that sealed the win in the second half before Aussie speedster Pama Fou ran in for a last-minute try.
Earlier in the day, the Blitzboks were thumped 24-7 by Fiji in the Cup semi-final.
The Pacific Islanders’ victory was built on a strong first half showing, as they totally outplayed South Africa. They spent the entire stanza in the Blitzboks’ territory and their physical superiority saw them rush in three tries through Jimmy Naikadawa, Osea Kolinisau and Setefano Caku for a 19-0 lead at half-time.
Emosi Vucago sealed the victory shortly after the restart. Dry grabbed his sixth try of the tournament for some consolation.
The Springbok Sevens also claimed a 14-5 win over France in the Cup quarterfinal.
Dry scored the only points in the first half before Robert Ebersohn dotted down after the break for a 14-0 lead. France grabbed an unconverted try at the death through Terry Bouhraoua, but Paul Treu’s charges held on for victory.
Blitzboks’ fixtures and results, day two:
Cup quarter-final: SA 14 France 5
Cup semi-final: SA 7 Fiji 24
Third/fourth place play-off: SA 17 Australia 0

Blizboks lost in the semi to Fiji not the quarter.
No disgrace losing to Fiji in the semi.
Play off against Oz at 11:30am.

@Gunther(gunther)-5: Not many will beat Fiji.
They made the semi in the first game of the new 7′s season. Not a bad start at all. Our best player (Cecil) was on the bench too with a rib injury.
We just beat Oz in the play off and we came 3rd. Not bad I think. We pick up some very valuable points here. Season is still very long.
So for me it was a good start.
Well done to our BlitzBokke.

Nice seeing Fiji win…
Immensely satisfying watching the panic in Kiwi eyes as Fiji dismantled, out physicalled and outplayed them…
Hail Fiji.

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-9:
Nice seeing you jumping of Fijis side now.
Strange how you really dont like your own country that much.
You live away from SA. Pray for teams like France and Fiji to win yet while your own country self implodes.

@bokke baiter(bokke baiter)-10: @Hurricane(Hurricane)-11: its immensely satisfying knowing we hold Bill for the next four years and that this is just the start of HG’s bitterness… (though truth be told its always been there)..
he must be scared of the massive echo that reverberates through SARU’s trophy cabinet… seems no one wants to visit the big top anymore lmfao..

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-25:
Fiji are a good sevens team and always have been.
As for being at the top where they belong means that NZ is also at the toop where they belong in the 15s version. Glad you see it like that.
28 Nov 2011, 19:23 pm
@Hurricane(Hurricane)-28: Nope. That is where the Boks belong, but you have the leasehold at the moment.
28 Nov 2011, 22:57 pm
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-29:
Interesting, never heard of a lease thats lasted this long.
Have your say
