Mjekevu, Newman given Sharks trial

Centres Wandile Mjekevu and Morgan Newman will join the Sharks on Monday for trials.

With the loss of Stefan Terblanche and Adi Jacobs, the Sharks will have a look at Mjekevu and Newman as they aim to bolster their centre ranks.

After falling out of favour in Johannesburg, 20-year-old former Baby Bok Mjekevu will have the opportunity to earn a contract at the Sharks. The KES old boy featured for the Lions in Super Rugby in 2010, playing 10 out of their 13 matches at wing. His highlight was a hat-trick in the 72-65 loss to the Chiefs. However, following injury, he has failed to regain a spot in the senior squad and spent this season with the Lions U21s.

Newman, the 2008 Nations Cup-winning Emerging Boks skipper, has successfully recovered from a broken leg that he suffered with the Stormers against the Bulls during the 2010 Super Rugby campaign. The 25-year-old spent this year with the Cheetahs in the Vodacom Cup, where he scored four tries in nine matches. Newman is expected to train with the Sharks’ Vodacom Cup squad.

It is reported that a decision on both players will be made before the Christmas break.
