Steyn targets SA return

Frans Steyn is expected to link up with a South African franchise after his contract with French club Racing Metro expires next June.

Steyn’s agent Gerrie Swart told Die Volksblad the veteran of two World Cups is considering a move back to his home country in 2012. It’s believed that the Lions were courting Steyn in early 2011, but Swart refused to confirm exactly which franchise is expected to secure the Bok centre’s services next year.

Meanwhile, Steyn is in France recovering from a shoulder injury incurred at the recent World Cup. If all goes to plan with regards to his rehabilitation, he should be back on the playing field for Racing by January.

    Please be the Sharks.

    10. Lambie
    11. Mvovo
    12. Steyn
    13. Mjekevu
    14. JP
    15. Viljoen

Looks like a two horse race between the Sharks and the Lions.

Doubtful if the Cheetahs can afford him, Bulls unlikely to take him (and I can’t see him fitting in with their playing culture) and Stormers recruiting lately? Well, let’s just say it leaves a lot to be desired.

I am sure that the ponies will want to make a play for another centre as well.
Cannot see the Bulls making a move. He is a little too creative for their thinking.

Lions were courting him early in 2011 when they still had open checkbook from Robert Gumede….Not anymore.

Not sure also if Steyn will fit in with Draconian Mitch…as he seems not to have a penchant for “troublemakers” as mentioned by Lions fans….Steyn is very much a free spirited, supremely confident bloke who knows his value….Doubt he will fit in amongst the “footsoldiers”…Plus they sign him he will cost a pretty penny, which will limit their ability to increase overall strength of squad which they need to do.Budgetary provisions while not dour as before they cant be at the level during short Guma Group stint at Lions where Gumede bankrolled the entire union’s costs for almost 6-8months(as he confirmed a few months ago on Metro FM interview)…

But we shall see.Maybe Steyn wont look for a massive paycheck since he would have earned close to 50 million rand from his stint in France.

Sharks dont think they get him, dogsh*t recruitment over last 2 years & his previous tumultuous relationship with the union doesnt inspire any confidence in them attaining his services….Plumtree & Straeuli dont seem to like decent midfielders….

Big thing with steyn is that he is a farm boy and he want to live close by. Like the Dup Brothers. So unless the stormers can move newlands too the free state they got no chance.

    @Sasuke(Sasuke)-13: Agreed.

Steyn showed his value at 12 during the WC.

I venture to say that if he had played in the QF things may have gone a different way,

@garth(garth)-12: Tell me about this Swiel Character?

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-15: Yip Steyn showed his value at 12 and Lambie showed his value at 15 during the WC.

I think it is a bit premature to include Swiel in next year’s backline. Although surrounded by such experienced players he might come good.

Ajay Sooklal, chairman of Cricket SA’s legal and governance committee said he had noticed from January that Cricket SA lacked ethical leadership and he was “appalled” when he was told that the salary of the national cricket coach was a secret. Gary Kirsten was recently appointed coach, but no details of his salary have been revealed.

“We know the salary of the president, high court judges and chief justices but here we had a salary of a national coach that was secret against [the principles of] good governance,” said Sooklal.

i would not be surprised at all if it were indeed wp.
all the elements are there for a marriage of convenience:

mercenary tendencies on the part of employer and employee.
laid back spliffy culture not too disimilar to durbs.
    good climate and great scenery.
a recent spate of losses of good young (and old’ish) players from wp’s books.
a seemingly genuine opening for midfielders or fullbacks to ply their trade (see above).
a history on the part of the union of throwing big money at big name players to lure them to wp.

ja….i can definitely see it happening…

but it would be good for province all the same though…

You have to give it to these sports administrators.

Years ago Gerald Majola was horrified when he learnt that the then SARU President, Brian van Rooyen was out earning more than twice over.

And did Majola get his increase to match it? Hell yes. And then some.

If anyone thought sports administrators really cared about sport, they’re living in cloud cuckoo land.

    You gotta follow the money.

why are you so twitchy about kirsten’s salary?

why should his salary be a secret, is it internationally accepted best practise?

we know fabio cappello earns £7 million a year but gary’s pay is a secret :D

    Sascoc chief in Lotto trouble
    WERNER SWART | 04 December, 2011 02:04

THE country’s most influential sports administrator is under fire over claims that his company received commission on a R26-million Lotto grant to Cycling SA.

Gideon Sam is a director of sports marketing company, Accelerate Sport SA, which helped the sports body when they applied for a grant from National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund’s distributing agency on sports and recreation.

But Sam, the president of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), also chairs the agency’s sports and recreation unit which allocates lottery funds to sport organisations.

On Friday, Sam denied any wrongdoing saying he had recused himself when the application came up for discussion.

He said he was a non-executive director in the company and therefore not involved in its day-to-day operations.

The Department of Sport and the National Lotteries Board (NLB) confirmed Sascoc had alerted them to the claims of a conflict of interest against Sam.

Accelerate Sport SA’s marketing director, Gary Grant, confirmed it assisted Cycling SA in its application for Lotto funding. The company, whose other directors are former SA Rugby bosses Rian Oberholzer and Songezo Nayo, said it was so far paid R162223 for their work on the application.

But yesterday, the organisation said in a statement it would pay commission only on 50% of the Lotto payment and that the overall commission due to Accelerate would not exceed R1-million of the R26-million grant.

Cycling SA claimed all payments to Accelerate would come from its “operational budget” – but a senior sports administrator scoffed at this claim, telling the Sunday Times: “If they pay it from the Lotto money or from their other income, it’s one and the same thing.”

Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy confirmed that “certain allegations” have been brought to their attention.

Reddy said: “We had to give them [the Sports Department and NLB] an indication of the inferences that have been made. I must be very clear that we are not saying the president [Sam] did anything wrong, we merely had to report it.”

NLB chairman, Professor Alfred Nevhutanda, confirmed he was aware of the allegations against Sam. Nevhutanda said: “We will now look at the contents of the allegations first and then the matter will be dealt with by the board.”

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s spokesman, Paena Galane, said “the matter is being discussed internally”.

Galane said Reddy had already met with the department’s director-general, Alec Moemi. The Sunday Times has learnt that the red flag was raised when, after Accelerate signed on Cycling SA in May last year, the federation’s Lotto grant tripled from R8-million over the past three years to R26-million for the next three years.

But Sam maintains that he declared all his business interests to the NLDTF and recused himself when funding for organisations in which he has a stake came up for discussion.

“I’ve resigned myself to the fact it is always going to be an issue. But you need people with knowledge of sport to serve on the committee,” he said.

He said cycling was one of the sports the agency felt deserved more money in the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games. Accelerate’s Grant said it helped Cycling SA “to decide on which [of its] projects and focus areas to prioritise in the application”.

Grant and Cycling SA president Greg Till denied that the company was paid a percentage of the Lotto grant, saying it was merely given “a fee” from its operational budget.

But NLB spokesman Sershan Naidoo said the board “discouraged” the use of outside consultants taking a piece of the Lotto cake. “We discourage the use of consultants who charge a percentage of the grant received,” Naidoo said.

On Sam’s dual role as a director of Accelerate Sports SA and chairman of the distributing agency, Naidoo said it was up to the member to declare his interests and they would then have to “recuse himself from the adjudicating process”. Asked about Sam’s involvement in the awarding of the grant, Till said: “It has been explained that he managed the conflict of interest, and it was made clear that his involvement would in no way influence the outcome of the allocated amount.”

Said Sam: “In terms of cycling, whether I was there or not, they would have gotten that amount.

“We decided before that some sporting organisations would get category A status to prepare them for London 2012 … including cycling.”
