Steyn targets SA return
7 Dec 2011
Frans Steyn is expected to link up with a South African franchise after his contract with French club Racing Metro expires next June.
Steyn’s agent Gerrie Swart told Die Volksblad the veteran of two World Cups is considering a move back to his home country in 2012. It’s believed that the Lions were courting Steyn in early 2011, but Swart refused to confirm exactly which franchise is expected to secure the Bok centre’s services next year.
Meanwhile, Steyn is in France recovering from a shoulder injury incurred at the recent World Cup. If all goes to plan with regards to his rehabilitation, he should be back on the playing field for Racing by January.

12. Steyn
13. Mjekevu
14. JP
15. Viljoen
Looks like a two horse race between the Sharks and the Lions.
Doubtful if the Cheetahs can afford him, Bulls unlikely to take him (and I can’t see him fitting in with their playing culture) and Stormers recruiting lately? Well, let’s just say it leaves a lot to be desired.

frans steyn won’t go to the Lions, he is 10 times the “troublemaker” mjekevu is alleged to be, mitchell won’t take his kak
7 Dec 2011, 09:55 am
I am sure that the ponies will want to make a play for another centre as well.
Cannot see the Bulls making a move. He is a little too creative for their thinking.
7 Dec 2011, 10:04 am
Lions were courting him early in 2011 when they still had open checkbook from Robert Gumede….Not anymore.
Not sure also if Steyn will fit in with Draconian Mitch…as he seems not to have a penchant for “troublemakers” as mentioned by Lions fans….Steyn is very much a free spirited,supremely confident bloke who knows his value….Doubt he will fit in amongst the “footsoldiers”…Plus they sign him he will cost a pretty penny,which will limit their ability to increase overall strength of squad which they need to do.Budgetary provisions while not dour as before they cant be at the level during short Guma Group stint at Lions where Gumede bankrolled the entire union’s costs for almost 6-8months(as he confirmed a few months ago on Metro FM interview)…
But we shall see.Maybe Steyn wont look for a massive paycheck since he would have earned close to 50 million rand from his stint in France.
Sharks dont think they get him,dogsh*t recruitment over last 2 years & his previous tumultuous relationship with the union doesnt inspire any confidence in them attaining his services….Plumtree & Straeuli dont seem to like decent midfielders….

@Transformation(Transformation)-3:
dont think Doppies is a genuine 13. can do a patch job there but best suited for 13…Now 12.Steyn 13.Mapoe…That would be interesting

Big thing with steyn is that he is a farm boy and he want to live close by. Like the Dup Brothers. So unless the stormers can move newlands too the free state they got no chance.
7 Dec 2011, 10:31 am
@Kietzphat(Kietzphat)-2: Stormers were holding out for the big catch! Stormers have the money as well. Also JDV will be on his last next year and Steyn will slot in perfectly.
7 Dec 2011, 10:33 am
@patch(patch)-9: Lots of wine farms for him to play on.
7 Dec 2011, 10:43 am

7 Dec 2011, 10:51 am
@garth(garth)-12: Steyn at 12 man. Aplon/Pietersen at 15.
7 Dec 2011, 10:54 am
@mshiniwami(mshiniwami)-6: Draconian Mitch? You’re worse than Plod’s Grantie. You’ve basically declared a Fatwa on the guy based on nothing but the fact that he didn’t extend a contract to your latest favourite black hope. Kom nou, man.
7 Dec 2011, 10:59 am
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-13: Agreed.
Steyn showed his value at 12 during the WC.
I venture to say that if he had played in the QF things may have gone a different way,
@garth(garth)-12: Tell me about this Swiel Character?
7 Dec 2011, 11:03 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-15: Yip Steyn showed his value at 12 and Lambie showed his value at 15 during the WC.
I think it is a bit premature to include Swiel in next year’s backline. Although surrounded by such experienced players he might come good.
7 Dec 2011, 11:06 am
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-16: Don’t know him. What’s the big deal?
7 Dec 2011, 11:09 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-17: Bishops flyhalf. Top points scoring for the past two seasons. He is currently training with Stormers larger training group. He just finished matric a few weeks ago!
7 Dec 2011, 11:10 am
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-17: Apparently he is very good. Has a natural feel for the game. Good runner. I havent seen anything concerning but if the reports are to be believed he is the next Cape Hope.
7 Dec 2011, 11:11 am
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-18: Ok got it now. I actually saw a video compilation of him the other day.
Who knows.
Maybe he’ll make it, maybe he won’t.
Certainly not next year.
7 Dec 2011, 11:14 am
Hope Steyn fulfils his enormous potential – he was playing really well and looked like he was njoying it at world cup great shame he got injured.
7 Dec 2011, 11:50 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-14: you’re fudging issues Mshini has had reservations about Mitchell even before the guy BEGAN coaching the Lions. you’re making this about Mjekevu and it’s not.
7 Dec 2011, 11:57 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-22: MiniShwarma quickly made his Mitch issue about Mjekevu. It doesn’t take a Forensic Googologist to figure that out.
7 Dec 2011, 12:09 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-19:
Don’t you mean the next Bulls hope?
7 Dec 2011, 12:14 pm
I know this latest story came from Beeld, but what happened to the last one where Steyn said he’d prefer joining the Cheetahs?
7 Dec 2011, 12:15 pm
@David(David)-24:
Oops, Volksblad.
7 Dec 2011, 12:20 pm
I would put my money on Frans Steyn returning to the Sharks.
Imagine this squad to take on the Super 15 next year…
15. Riaan Viljoen.
14. J.P. Pieterson.
13. Marius Joubert.
12. Frans Steyn.
11. Lwazi Mvovo.
10. Patrick Lambie.
9. Charl McLeod.
8. Ryan Kankowski.
7. Willem Alberts.
6. Jean Deysel.
5. Alistair Hargreaves.
4. Ross Skeate.
3. Jannie Du Plessis.
2. Bismark Du Plessis (c).
1. Tendai Mtawarira.
16. Eugene Van Staden.
17. Craig Burden.
18. Jan-Handre Marais.
19. Keegan Daniels.
20. Conrad Hoffman.
21. Jacques-Louis Potgietor.
22. Wandile Mjekevu.
7 Dec 2011, 12:26 pm
@ShaunSwindon(Karma-zaf)-27:
No Botes?
7 Dec 2011, 12:32 pm
@ShaunSwindon(Karma-zaf)-27: not bad but i would prefer either jordaan or wandile at 13.
let the new kids rock the midfield.
eish, i really hope Fransie comes back to Durbs.
the best saffa 12 for the last 4 years by far.
7 Dec 2011, 12:34 pm
I am a long time sharks supporter, but I fear that Steyn is still about 7-8 years too young for the sharks centre strategy…unless its changes from the past 2 years
7 Dec 2011, 12:44 pm
@BULLET(BULLET)-30: so he will play centre at 32?
no man, he was already the no 1 12 in the s14 2009 before ruan got injured and he shifted to 10.
the kid can become a superstar at 12.
7 Dec 2011, 13:12 pm
according to die burger steyn is already on his way to cape town! lol
7 Dec 2011, 13:13 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-29: and he didnt even play there much. jdv in 2008 will argue with you.
7 Dec 2011, 13:15 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-32: Hope so!
JdV, Steyn, Adi and JdJ. Quality rotation!
7 Dec 2011, 13:26 pm
@Michael(mikeybrass)-34: Yes! It will help alleviate the loss of Jaque Fourie
7 Dec 2011, 14:20 pm
JdV and Steyn as 12s, Adi and JdJ as 13s. Established quality and players who know each other well.
7 Dec 2011, 14:42 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-31: quite right, he was the “no.1 12″ AT THE SHARKS, not in SA.
7 Dec 2011, 16:15 pm
@David(David)-28: Yip no Botes
7 Dec 2011, 16:34 pm
wherever he chooses to lay his hat for his home south african rugby is the better for it.
7 Dec 2011, 17:14 pm
Ajay Sooklal, chairman of Cricket SA’s legal and governance committee said he had noticed from January that Cricket SA lacked ethical leadership and he was “appalled” when he was told that the salary of the national cricket coach was a secret. Gary Kirsten was recently appointed coach, but no details of his salary have been revealed.
“We know the salary of the president, high court judges and chief justices but here we had a salary of a national coach that was secret against [the principles of] good governance,” said Sooklal.
7 Dec 2011, 17:33 pm
@au revoir mon tout noirs, au revoir…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-39: And by that you obviously mean Western Province.
7 Dec 2011, 18:00 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-40: Well, I actually see this both ways.
Not sure where I stand on this.
7 Dec 2011, 18:12 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-41:
i would not be surprised at all if it were indeed wp.
all the elements are there for a marriage of convenience:
mercenary tendencies on the part of employer and employee.
laid back spliffy culture not too disimilar to durbs.
good climate and great scenery.
a recent spate of losses of good young (and old’ish) players from wp’s books.
a seemingly genuine opening for midfielders or fullbacks to ply their trade (see above).
a history on the part of the union of throwing big money at big name players to lure them to wp.
ja….i can definitely see it happening…
but it would be good for province all the same though…
7 Dec 2011, 18:29 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-40:
So he only noticed it from January?
And only with regard to Kirsten’s salary?
Ja well no fine.
7 Dec 2011, 19:30 pm
hayi bo the artist?
Was corrie van zyl’s salary a secret? If not why is gary’s a secret then?
Are you suggesting that CSA practise selective transparency?
We know what jake earned, we were told what pdv earned everytime he nogotiated his contract, now what valid reason would one have to keep kirsten’s salary a secret?
Nc nc
7 Dec 2011, 19:40 pm
Who cares. Throw the secrecy bill at it.
7 Dec 2011, 19:43 pm
What was mickey’s salary
7 Dec 2011, 20:28 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-45:
You have to give it to these sports administrators.
Years ago Gerald Majola was horrified when he learnt that the then SARU President, Brian van Rooyen was out earning more than twice over.
And did Majola get his increase to match it? Hell yes. And then some.
If anyone thought sports administrators really cared about sport, they’re living in cloud cuckoo land.
You gotta follow the money.
7 Dec 2011, 20:42 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-45:
Oh I’m sorry I didn’t realise he was in charge of corporate governance at saru as well.
I thought it was just cricket south africa.
So he was only concerned about kirsten’s renumeratlon not majola’s?
Mmm selective much?
7 Dec 2011, 20:55 pm
It’s a dynamic!
