Jacobs turns down Stormers

Jacobs turns down Stormers

Adi Jacobs has declined an invitation to join the Stormers’ training squad and won’t play for the Cape franchise in 2012.

After Jacobs was released from his Sharks contract, he moved to the Western Cape with the hope of representing the Stormers or Boland. Coach Allister Coetzee said at the time that Jacobs would be welcome to trial at the franchise, and given the Stormers had lost Jaque Fourie, Tim Whitehead and Johann Sadie, they could have used another experienced centre.

But on Friday, Coetzee told Die Burger that Jacobs had declined an invitation to train with the Cape team, and so has not been included in the initial training squad.

Coetzee will name a reduced squad of approximately 40 players following their training camp in Hermanus in January.

    well done adi!

    AC: uhm, come train with us and we will see if you are good enough for a contract. after all, we have sooooooo many options at centre here at wp nowadays.
    we have uhm…jaqu…uhm..no ok but we have….tim white……ag nee man…..we have sadie! what a player…..ag nee man he is gone too.

    well never mind, we have jdv and jdj, what a pair of distributors! trytime here we come, they can surely play the whole superrugby season and the 3n without injury?

    nah, adi we are sorted man thanksanyway.

    :lol:

    @rangerman-57: Actually there’s probably more to this story,

    The initial reports said that he did not respond to an invitation.

    Besides it’s never a given that a player is signed without testing etc,

    I’m just the moer-in that we are short in the depth in the first place.

    I must be honest, if I were AC I’d be thinking peter grant for the standby 12, and Adi for 2nd 13.

    That should cover it,

    @Upho-56: upho, what was your previous nic mate?

    was it ufo?

    @stormersboy-58: ja PG will be your standby 12 but the guy has played so much rugga he will start to break down this next year imo.

    its strange though, maybe wp have some new talent coming through that we dont know about?

    just quite amusing from a sharks prospective how quickly the wheel turns. just three months ago stormers fans were laughing at us as you guys had:

    JdV
    JF
    JdJ
    whitehead
    sadie
    Newman

    and the sharks had a bunch of old men and journeymen (this hasnt really changed all that much though) but now we have:

    bosman
    joubert
    whitehead
    jordaan
    possibly mjekevu
    possibly newman

    ? life is funny like that i suppose.

    how you doing ranger…? well i hope…?

  • 61.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @rangerman-59: Yes it is.

    The younger U 21 guys all show promise but the guys who were “ready to go” at senior level were guys like Sadie, Whitehead and that other Matie who went overseas (who’s name i forget) but that’s the way it goes I guess…..

    Peter Grant is a better 12 than 10 IMO.

    At 10 he is quite kuk actually.

    Jacobs is probably negotiates with some Japanese club,
    no, he is not likely to go to Europe where the centres are used as ball carriers and 1st tacklers on the fringes, not his cup of tea and a short stay is a given for him

    @stormersboy-61: too true. he is a better 12 imo too. cheers man!

  • 65.Hondo: Reply to this comment

    The Sharks lost 3 reasonable, hard hitting centres in Barritt, Andrei Strauss and Riaan Swanepoel last 3 seasons, all indications were that Jacobs being a fixture at the Sharks forced them out

    i also rated him… great on defense… tough nut…

    cheers bud… you too!!

    Hmmm, he’s probably looking for a more chilled gig with Boland and know’s he’ll have to put himself on the line every weekend with the Stormers. The dude is getting on, and we don’t know why he’s moved back to the Western Cape – most likely its a family or business situation.

    At the same time, I’m quite excited about the lighties we’ll be using next season – think about those guys, getting amped knowing they stand a really good chance to crack the Stormers side.

    Good on Adi to show WP/Stormers the finger. They did not recognize his talent when he was a youngster.

    Players like Gurthro, JPP, Ashley Johnson, should do the same if/when WP/Stormers approach them.

    Pity guys like Ricky, Hanyany Shimange and Bobo did not tell them to vokkof after they were overlooked in the first place by WP/Stormers.

  • 74.bryce_in_oz: Reply to this comment

    @nama1-73:

    WP gave those latter three extended careers they arguably did not deserve at top dollar…

    Calling Gurthro who debuted in CC rugby for the Cheetahs at 19 ‘over-looked’ is a bit rich…

    Calling JPP, who followed his uncle and cousins over to the Sharks as an 18 yr ‘over-looked’ is a bit rich…

    Or you going to name every POC teenager born in the Cape over the last two decades ‘hard-done by’ for not being given a WP jumper?

    Complex much?

  • 75.nama1: Reply to this comment

    Might be wrong but I believe Tank played a few games for WP after Gary Pagel left.

    He was not too bad. Good scrummer but not your Beast/Gurthro type frontrower around the park. More a Tommy Laubscher type.

    @bryce_in_oz-74:
    So WP contracted Ricky, Bobo and Shimange at the wrong end of their careers. Why did they not see their potential when they were younger? Remember how JW pleaded with unions to give Ricky and Ashwin (forgot about him) contracts? WP flatly refused. Why?

    “Complex much?”

    Every time I see one of these (“chip on your shoulder/over sensitive are some others) I know that I scratch at some place where it probably did not itch.

    Get another line.

    @Upho-77:

    what was the story that tommy used to carry a full grown sheep on his shoulders… or was it one on each shoulder…??? :shock:

    not the fittest prop ever but one of the few men who made chuck norris back down… :wink:

  • 79.Charlie: Reply to this comment

    If Stormers are really interested they should have offered Jacobs a contract, why wanting him to join without a guaranteed contract, his track record surely prove that he is quite loyal and not a money chaser :twisted:

  • 80.nama1: Reply to this comment

    @Upho-78:
    I watched a match where Tommy was up against Heinrich Rogers at Newlands in 1994 once. Never saw such a straight back from a TH. Every scrum was cheered by the crowd as if a try had been scored. :lol:

    You know how he became a Bok despite him not having all the skills and not being the fittest player around?

    Apparently Kitch Christie sent a questionaire to all the LH playing at that stage in which he asked them who the strongest TH was that they’ve ever encountered. The unanimous answer was Tommy Laubscher.

    He promptly drafted him into his Bok squad.

    Pity we don’t breed them strong like that anymore.

    Allister spoke to Adi once, telling him he is welcome to join them at training. Rassie never picked up the phone to find out what his plans are, or whether he is interested.

    Surely you should do more than just ask a guy to come train with you given the **** WP is in at center?

  • 86.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    @PissAnt-85: Yes that sounds a bit “slapgat” to me.

    Agree with your post 100%.

    Unless they don’t think that they are in that muck poo at centre after all……

  • 87.PissAnt: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy-86:

    Like him or not, Adi is an experienced Bok center, not some club player or youngster you ‘invite’ to a training session.

    Sit down and discuss details with him. If he has to play himself into a contract at least communicate the deliverables to the guy and what is expected?

    WP are a bunch of morons, 2012 is not going to be a very good year.

  • 88.mshiniwami: Reply to this comment

    @PissAnt-87:

    Exactly PA

    A 20 sumthin test veteran & a 2011 Bok even isnt a “invitee”

    Frikkie Welsh even got a contract with Wp a few years ago without “invite” to get a place rubbish.

  • 89.Original-Pierre: Reply to this comment

    I wish Adi could`ve joined the Stormers.
    Sure he might not have gotten a lot of game time, but he missed the opportunity to show Plumtree how big a mistake it was to stick with those cart horses instead of giving him an opportunity.
