Jacobs turns down Stormers
9 Dec 2011
Adi Jacobs has declined an invitation to join the Stormers’ training squad and won’t play for the Cape franchise in 2012.
After Jacobs was released from his Sharks contract, he moved to the Western Cape with the hope of representing the Stormers or Boland. Coach Allister Coetzee said at the time that Jacobs would be welcome to trial at the franchise, and given the Stormers had lost Jaque Fourie, Tim Whitehead and Johann Sadie, they could have used another experienced centre.
But on Friday, Coetzee told Die Burger that Jacobs had declined an invitation to train with the Cape team, and so has not been included in the initial training squad.
Coetzee will name a reduced squad of approximately 40 players following their training camp in Hermanus in January.

Hope Adi gets a offer from a overseas club.
Go make some big cash Adi you deserve it.

looks like the stormers were hoping to get him cheap, cheap…

Why no article about the Lions imminent financial collapse?
According to Tank Lanning, the Lions only have money to pay their players up to December. And apparently all of the players are looking for other jobs now.
Or was this discussed under some other thread in the last couple of days?
9 Dec 2011, 09:49 am
@Tacitus-3: Because it’s a load of ****.
9 Dec 2011, 09:49 am
@Tacitus-3: Lions deny it. Tank won’t name his “reliable source”. No one doubts they are making losses, maybe a bit of exaggeration on Tank’s part.
9 Dec 2011, 09:54 am
If the Kings could actually win a Division 1 title there would be more pressure on the Lions.
9 Dec 2011, 09:57 am
Tank is not a journalist’s foreskin. Anyone who takes his “reporting” at face value deserves the disillusionment that’s no doubt in store.
9 Dec 2011, 10:00 am
@Simon-4:
Oh, ok.
But I still don’t get what disqualified it from being an article on this site then…
9 Dec 2011, 10:03 am
It seems the Lions imminent financial collapse is about as likely as Butch being a certain starter in the Bok World Cup team.
Not worthy article material for this blog. Oh wait…

hey puma…
hope you’re well bud… sorry about a week or so ago… when you posted to me but I had already left for a meeting…
wasn’t ignoring you…
i agree with you… adi does deserve a good ‘retirement’ package… he’s been loyal to the sharks… to a fault even…
@>^..^< katman-7:
he wasn’t a prop’s foreskin either…
he’s always punted as an “ex-wp prop”… but for the life of me i just can’t remember him or his name in terms of province rugby EVER…
does anyone know if and when he actually played for province…? and how many times he played…???
9 Dec 2011, 10:09 am
what I want to know is, who the **** is actually going to buy butch james’s book? i mean, what can he have to say that is actually of any interest?
9 Dec 2011, 10:09 am
@Upho-10:
Hehe.
Yeah. I’ve always taken Tank’s credentials paragraph on News24 as a bit of a personal insult. Because I tend to think I’m reasonably knowledgeable about SA rugby, but for the life of me I can not remember ever hearing about Tank Lanning prior to his face popping up on News24 as rugby columnist.
And yet he is apparently this legendary WP prop.
It’s been bothering me for a couple of years now. How could I have missed his entire career?

President Zuma, as part of his Climate Change charm offensive visits a synagogue in Durbs to check on their recycling initiative.
The father of the nation sees a pile of empty kosher wine bottles and asks the rabbi what they do with them.
The rabbi replies – when we have enough we send them odd to recycling and we get new ones in return.
The pres then sees a alarge bin full of melted down candles as asks the rabbie what they do with them.
The rabbi replies – when we have enough we send them to recycling and they send us some new candles in return.
The pres then sees a large box marked foreskins that is empty and asks the rabbie what happened to the foreskins.
The rabbi replies that once they had enough foreskins they sent them off for recycling and they were sent a President in return.

Golf fence
A little old lady was walking down the street dragging two large plastic garbage bags behind her. One of the bags was ripped and every once
in a while a $20 fell out onto the sidewalk.
Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, “Ma’am, there are $20
bills falling out of that bag.”
“Oh, really? Darn it!” said the little old lady. “I’d better go back and see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me officer.”
Well, now, not so fast,” said the cop. Where did you get all that money? You didn’t steal it, did you?”
“Oh, no, no”, said the old lady. “You see, my back yard is right next to a golf course.
A lot of golfers come and pee through a knot hole in my fence, right into my flower garden. It used to really tick me off. Kills the flowers, you know. Then I thought, ‘why not make the best of it?
So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, real quiet, with my hedge clippers. Every time some guy sticks his thing through my fence, I surprise him, grab hold of it and say, ‘O.K., buddy! Give me $20, or off it comes.’
“Well, that seems only fair,” said the cop, laughing. “OK. Good luck! Oh, by the way, what’s in the other bag?”
“Not everybody pays.”

My word, says the Pom, you aren’t wearing any knickers.
That’s because you are so cheap I don’t have money for any she replies.
Well, here is a fiver go and sort yourself out he says.
Next up the Irishman’s wife bends down to tee her hasbands ball up only to display a gleaming dark brown bush.
Begorrah says Paddy you aren’t wearing any panties.
That’s because you are so cheap I have no money for them she replies.
Well for the love of Mary here’s a fiver go and buy some immediately he says.
Next the Scotsman’s wife bends down to tee her husband’s ball up only to display a rampant ginger minge.
Why are you nae wearing any panties woman exclaims the Scot.
Because you are too cheap to buy me any replies his wife furiously.
Well don’t just stand there, the Scot says, her’s a comb go tidy yourself up a bit.

Tank graduated from UCT in Social Science, majoring in Economics, with a post-graduate diploma in Marketing Management, this former Ikeys student and first team star is no stranger to the media, as he is the editor of one of SA’s leading sport news source – Sport24.
Rugby, as one would expect, has always been Tank’s first love.
After many happy amateur years at UCT, he made his Western Province debut in the late 1990s; however, a serious neck injury cut short a promising first-class rugby career.
“It was difficult having to deal with that, but I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved (with rugby) on the media side,” says Tank, who describes himself as a “once diabolic student, with nothing but rugby and a good old beer on my mind”.
Tank has made peace with his past and his present, however, adding in conversation with varsitycup.co.za: “I love writing, enjoy the commercial side of things and generally love my job.”
He started as a picture researcher and marketing novice in the sports and lifestyle publishing industry, followed by heading up their sports photo agency, before starting the online division. Later he became part of the Touchline Media family before switching across to sport24.co.za. Lanning covered his media bases through a Media and Management course he completed from Stellenbosch Business School, as well as a ‘Publishing on the Web’ course at Stanford University in California.

@Upho-10: No problems ufo. How you doing buddy? Hope well.
Yeah I really hope Adi picks up a nice contract with a overseas club. The way to go in your last years of playing rugby. Need to earn as much as you can.
He was very loyal to the Sharks. So wishing him all the best,

you guys interested in any media business…?
9 Dec 2011, 12:26 pm
well done adi!
AC: uhm, come train with us and we will see if you are good enough for a contract. after all, we have sooooooo many options at centre here at wp nowadays.
we have uhm…jaqu…uhm..no ok but we have….tim white……ag nee man…..we have sadie! what a player…..ag nee man he is gone too.
well never mind, we have jdv and jdj, what a pair of distributors! trytime here we come, they can surely play the whole superrugby season and the 3n without injury?
nah, adi we are sorted man thanksanyway.
9 Dec 2011, 12:31 pm
@rangerman-57: Actually there’s probably more to this story,
The initial reports said that he did not respond to an invitation.
Besides it’s never a given that a player is signed without testing etc,
I’m just the moer-in that we are short in the depth in the first place.
I must be honest, if I were AC I’d be thinking peter grant for the standby 12, and Adi for 2nd 13.
That should cover it,
9 Dec 2011, 12:42 pm
@Upho-56: upho, what was your previous nic mate?
was it ufo?
@stormersboy-58: ja PG will be your standby 12 but the guy has played so much rugga he will start to break down this next year imo.
its strange though, maybe wp have some new talent coming through that we dont know about?
just quite amusing from a sharks prospective how quickly the wheel turns. just three months ago stormers fans were laughing at us as you guys had:
JdV
JF
JdJ
whitehead
sadie
Newman
and the sharks had a bunch of old men and journeymen (this hasnt really changed all that much though) but now we have:
bosman
joubert
whitehead
jordaan
possibly mjekevu
possibly newman
? life is funny like that i suppose.
9 Dec 2011, 12:46 pm
@rangerman-59:
yeah bud… still is… just was mucking around and put the ph in for the f… so people say the word as opposed to spelling it out…
how you doing ranger…? well i hope…?
9 Dec 2011, 12:49 pm
@rangerman-59: Yes it is.
The younger U 21 guys all show promise but the guys who were “ready to go” at senior level were guys like Sadie, Whitehead and that other Matie who went overseas (who’s name i forget) but that’s the way it goes I guess…..
Peter Grant is a better 12 than 10 IMO.
At 10 he is quite kuk actually.
9 Dec 2011, 12:57 pm
Jacobs is probably negotiates with some Japanese club,
no, he is not likely to go to Europe where the centres are used as ball carriers and 1st tacklers on the fringes, not his cup of tea and a short stay is a given for him
9 Dec 2011, 13:00 pm
@stormersboy-61:
paul bosch…??
agree with you about grant…
9 Dec 2011, 13:02 pm
@Upho-60: ah, was wondering ok cool. ja all good. gonna go for a beer now so chat laters mate.
@stormersboy-61: too true. he is a better 12 imo too. cheers man!
9 Dec 2011, 13:02 pm
The Sharks lost 3 reasonable, hard hitting centres in Barritt, Andrei Strauss and Riaan Swanepoel last 3 seasons, all indications were that Jacobs being a fixture at the Sharks forced them out
9 Dec 2011, 13:04 pm
@rangerman-64:
cheers bud… enjoy…
9 Dec 2011, 13:13 pm
@Upho-63: That’s the one. I always rated him but he had a couple of bad injury breaks.
9 Dec 2011, 13:17 pm
@rangerman-64: cheers bro also out
@Upho-66: have a good weekend boet!
9 Dec 2011, 13:24 pm
@stormersboy-67:
yeah… he played in that semi against the bulls and did really well…
i also rated him… great on defense… tough nut…
cheers bud… you too!!
9 Dec 2011, 14:21 pm
Hmmm, he’s probably looking for a more chilled gig with Boland and know’s he’ll have to put himself on the line every weekend with the Stormers. The dude is getting on, and we don’t know why he’s moved back to the Western Cape – most likely its a family or business situation.
At the same time, I’m quite excited about the lighties we’ll be using next season – think about those guys, getting amped knowing they stand a really good chance to crack the Stormers side.
9 Dec 2011, 15:19 pm
Thank GOD we did not buy him- held my breath for a while
9 Dec 2011, 16:01 pm
@Vundu-70: He is a born and bred CT boy, his entire family is here , I think even his wife and kids stayed in CT .
10 Dec 2011, 01:40 am
Good on Adi to show WP/Stormers the finger. They did not recognize his talent when he was a youngster.
Players like Gurthro, JPP, Ashley Johnson, should do the same if/when WP/Stormers approach them.
Pity guys like Ricky, Hanyany Shimange and Bobo did not tell them to vokkof after they were overlooked in the first place by WP/Stormers.
10 Dec 2011, 02:27 am
@nama1-73:
WP gave those latter three extended careers they arguably did not deserve at top dollar…
Calling Gurthro who debuted in CC rugby for the Cheetahs at 19 ‘over-looked’ is a bit rich…
Calling JPP, who followed his uncle and cousins over to the Sharks as an 18 yr ‘over-looked’ is a bit rich…
Or you going to name every POC teenager born in the Cape over the last two decades ‘hard-done by’ for not being given a WP jumper?
Complex much?
10 Dec 2011, 02:52 am
Might be wrong but I believe Tank played a few games for WP after Gary Pagel left.
He was not too bad. Good scrummer but not your Beast/Gurthro type frontrower around the park. More a Tommy Laubscher type.
10 Dec 2011, 07:23 am
@bryce_in_oz-74:
So WP contracted Ricky, Bobo and Shimange at the wrong end of their careers. Why did they not see their potential when they were younger? Remember how JW pleaded with unions to give Ricky and Ashwin (forgot about him) contracts? WP flatly refused. Why?
“Complex much?”
Every time I see one of these (“chip on your shoulder/over sensitive are some others) I know that I scratch at some place where it probably did not itch.

not the fittest prop ever but one of the few men who made chuck norris back down…
10 Dec 2011, 10:03 am
If Stormers are really interested they should have offered Jacobs a contract, why wanting him to join without a guaranteed contract, his track record surely prove that he is quite loyal and not a money chaser
10 Dec 2011, 12:29 pm
@Upho-78:
I watched a match where Tommy was up against Heinrich Rogers at Newlands in 1994 once. Never saw such a straight back from a TH. Every scrum was cheered by the crowd as if a try had been scored.
You know how he became a Bok despite him not having all the skills and not being the fittest player around?
Apparently Kitch Christie sent a questionaire to all the LH playing at that stage in which he asked them who the strongest TH was that they’ve ever encountered. The unanimous answer was Tommy Laubscher.
He promptly drafted him into his Bok squad.
Pity we don’t breed them strong like that anymore.

Surely you should do more than just ask a guy to come train with you given the **** WP is in at center?
12 Dec 2011, 09:09 am
@PissAnt-85: Yes that sounds a bit “slapgat” to me.
Agree with your post 100%.
Unless they don’t think that they are in that muck poo at centre after all……
12 Dec 2011, 09:40 am
@stormersboy-86:
Like him or not, Adi is an experienced Bok center, not some club player or youngster you ‘invite’ to a training session.
Sit down and discuss details with him. If he has to play himself into a contract at least communicate the deliverables to the guy and what is expected?
WP are a bunch of morons, 2012 is not going to be a very good year.
12 Dec 2011, 12:08 pm
@PissAnt-87:
Exactly PA
A 20 sumthin test veteran & a 2011 Bok even isnt a “invitee”
Frikkie Welsh even got a contract with Wp a few years ago without “invite” to get a place rubbish.
13 Dec 2011, 12:09 pm
I wish Adi could`ve joined the Stormers.
Sure he might not have gotten a lot of game time, but he missed the opportunity to show Plumtree how big a mistake it was to stick with those cart horses instead of giving him an opportunity.
Have your say
