Blitzboks fall at last hurdle

GARETH DUNCAN, reporting from the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, watched the Blitzboks concede a last-minute try in a 31-26 Cup final defeat to New Zealand on day two of the PE Sevens.
The inaugural PE Sevens finished in 20 minutes of madness.
Ahead and during this fixture, the crowd created a magical atmosphere – something that was missing throughout the weekend’s festivities. The St Georges band arrived late during the day and their presence ignited an electric mood around the park, especially with the large All Blacks club who sat themselves in the seats below them. It was a fitting stage for the Blitzboks and New Zealand, who were clearly the two best teams at the tournament.
For New Zealand, it was their eighth consecutive Cup final appearance while it was only the hosts’ third in their history, having previously won one and lost one – both to the former. And on this occasion, the Kiwis went on to win their ninth South African leg Cup title thanks to Tomasi Cama, who scored and converted a try in the last move of the game.
It was a close contest in the first half, which ended 17-14 at the break in the Kiwis’ favour. DJ Forbes led from the front and powered over for the opening try, which was cancelled out by Bernado Botha’s finish. The hosts were then dealt a blow when Boom Prinsloo was yellow-carded for a professional foul at the breakdown.
From a defending scrum, the Blitzboks crumbled and Cama capitalized to dive over for his first five-pointer. Once South Africa returned to seven men, Botha went on to score his fourth try of the tournament – but New Zealand held a slender half-time lead after Frank Halai crossed the chalk.
The Blitzboks dominated the early parts of the second half, surging into a 26-17 lead with Steven Hunt and Cecil Afrika running over from close range. But defensive lapses at the death saw Halai and Cama complete their braces, the latter score a controversial one as a few South African players believed they were tripped during the final play. But Australian referee Anthony Moyes waved play on as Cama broke South African hearts.
The day’s results sees Fiji and New Zealand share the World Series table lead with 51 log points each. The Fijians performed badly on day two, which ended with a 48-0 thrashing from Wales in the Plate final. The Blitzboks find themselves third on the table with 48 log points while England (47) and France (38) trail closely behind.
Earlier in the day, the Springbok Sevens downed Samoa 12-7 in the Cup semi-final.
It was a physical clash and one the hosts handled well as they kept the game tight and capitalised on favourable field position. They spent most of the first half in Samoa’s 22m area, and they finished two scoring opportunities to take a 12-0 half-time lead. A Branco du Preez side step and break opened the scoring while Botha showed great power out wide to finish in the corner. Samoa ended the half with six men when Afa Aiono was sin-binned for striking Kyle Brown with the forearm.
After the second stanza restart, South Africa placed a greater emphasis on restricting the Pacific Islanders – which they did to great effect. Samoa struggled to break into the hosts’ red zone but managed to score a late try through Paul Perez. The Blitzboks, however, still did enough for a place in the Cup final
In their first match of the day, Cecil Afrika scored two crucial tries in the Springbok Sevens’ 26-12 win over France in the Cup quarter-final.
Coming off a 19-5 Cup defeat to the French in the same fixture at the Dubai Sevens last weekend, the Blitzboks ended on top on this occasion thanks to their hometown playmaker. But it didn’t come easy, as an attacking error saw Terry Bouhraoua put the opposition 5-0 ahead.
An Afrika run set up Boom Prinsloo minutes later while the former also dotted down after sniping a gap. But Renaud Delmas finished off a late attack, which capitalised on the hosts’ shaky rearguard. The half-time score read 12-12.
The Blitzboks produced a strong second half showing to seal their place in the top four. Brilliant stepping from Afrika saw the speedster grab his 70th World Series try while Botha finished off proceedings after chasing down a Du Preez chip.

i’d just like to take this opportunity to thank all you wonderful South Africans for supporting the World Champs against South Africa in the final of the world sevens in PE today.
You guys were amazing,I don’t think we could of done it with out you.
To see proud Africans wearing All Black shirts almost brought a tear to my eye.
Its awesome to see the silver fern and all it stands for[strength,courage and fair play]gallantly worn by wonderful Africans.
The final was a great advertisement for sevens rugby and who knows with a bit more application the’Prancing Proteas’ as I like to call them,lets face it ,Blitzboks is a little jingoistic,could actually win a tournament.
Anyway fellow World Champ fans,see you all in Soweto…..One Love!!

Diary of an AB fan – yet another day passes as World Champions..
I really do think the NZRFU should refuse to play SA teams any more, we seem to beat them with such regular monotony, we really should send them an email asking them to up their game.. we should also refuse to send teams to the Republic because those teams will be accused of being thieves, what with the amount of silverware we seem to bring back with us Im surprised it hasnt happened earlier to be honest…
for a supposed rugby “superpower”, SA teams have as much spark as a 9 volt battery at the end of its life cycle..
and as a rugby fan, i truly do hope the Argies can step up in the 4 nations, that way at least SA will be able to match it with one of the other competitors… Lord knows they cant beat Aussie, losing 5 from 6 recently against the bros across the tasman…
anyways, must be off now, I heard that Bill was making yet another of his famous appearances, and like all kiwis, we just cant seem to get enough of the fellow’s eclat style…

I stopped visiting this site just after the world cup began because the over-the-top bickering was driving me up the wall. This is the first time I’ve been back since and I’m amazed that instead of hostilities ending, the situation seems to have got worse.
All this name-calling and point scoring is a drag. I’m a Kiwi but enjoy checking out the opinion of some S Africans who post here because they clearly know the game, and I find their perspective throws a whole new light on things. But some NZ and Bok fans enter into absolutely puerile, ***-for-tat, foaming-at-the-mouth dog-fights that do no one any credit. A lot of it is the stuff I used to see in the school playground as an 8-year-old. It’s hard to believe grown, intelligent people can behave in this manner.
It makes me wonder whether any of these people have ventured beyond the borders of their homeland or ever mixed with supporters from other nations. I’ve met a few S Africans after matches in NZ and abroad and we’ve always enjoyed each other’s company. When you meet the guys from “the other side” in the flesh you soon realise we all have a lot more in common than might first be imagined.
Remember when our teams weren’t allowed to play each other? What a horrendous gap that left in test rugby. We should be grateful those days are gone and appreciate what we have. I guess what I’m trying to say is NZ-SA rivalry is one of the great sporting contests and it ought to produce a bit more respect and a lot less hate between the fans. After all, this is rugby, not football. Let’s not travel as far down the path of contempt as so many fans of that code have ventured.
Regarding the sevens final: I thought NZ were incredibly lucky to win. The try that sealed it was extremely fortuitous. To me, man for man, SA looked to have the superior team but made a huge mistake in kicking the ball away twice in the last few minutes. The Boks looked so threatening with ball in hand that I’m sure they’d have scored at least another try, to sew it up, had they chosen to run it on those two occasions.
In the last few years SA have had some exciting sevens sides but I think this may be the best yet. Plenty of pace and lots of guys who can beat a man. On the other hand, NZ appear desperately short of pace and don’t look as strong as the NZ sides of recent times. We hung tough today and had some luck, but we’ll need more than that to win any more tournaments this year.

I had to be at a dinner dance at 19 h 30….refused to budge as final had to be watched! Arrived halfway through some sppeches……a little heartbroken and shell shocked !
A few beers later all was good again though……high theatre……

With my beloved Man U crashing out of Europe , coupled with the bloody WC shambles…..and the Stormers and WP semi final loss…..I certainly have had better sporting years!

The TOTAL picture of any person’s time in his or her pursuit of success of choice has ALWATS to be seriously considered but in some cases cannot because of the infringements placed by ssocial evils like APARTHEID.
This, the holistic approach, has always to be taken when South Africans are involved in the equation.

Cheers. I remember the first time I gained respect for SA rugby. It was in 1965 and I was six. My dad took me to watch Dawie de Villiers’ Boks train in Wellington. He pointed to this huge man, called Piet Botha, and said he was the tallest guy in the team. I checked my clipping of the squad that I’d cut from the newspaper and was astonished to see Botha was listed as 6ft 5in. I couldn’t believe it. Here was a man who was a whole inch taller than Colin Meads! Talk about stunned. It was unbelievable. I’ve been in awe of the Springboks ever since, lol.

Come on, mate. In the league, we lost to the Aussies in the one-off test this year, then were beaten by them and the Poms in the recent four nations and didn’t even make the final, lol. They were woeful. Hardly a team to brag about.
As for the Aussie Rules, we may be No 2 but only about three teams play it.
And as I don’t believe Aussie Rules and league are even played in SA it’s hardly relevant to bring them up on a SA rugby union site is it?

Read an interesting article in Rapport last week.
In it the writer that a long time ago there was something in SA politics called “Boerehaat.”
“It was a reference to Afrikaners in general and that was apparently how liberal English people saw the dumber, fairly uncultivated, racist and unmistakenly Afrikaans backbone of the NP.” (my translation)
This “Boerehaat” has now been replaced by what he terms “Bantoehaat.”
It is just that this new “hate” isn’t confined to just politics but to every sphere of life, it seems.

the problem is that too many white people feel it is not their problem and only really happens in the poorer, less educated black and coloured communities… this quite literally is a hangover from our apartheid past and perpetuated by our (mainly) white owned media… but nothing could be further from the truth… south african men are equal opportunity ******** and pigs… women are consistently and continually abused in all sectors of society… yes even I’m the affluent and leafy suburb of bishopscourt… one of the big differences is the white community is not honest enough with itself and simply pretends it doesn’t happen… and there is incredible pressure on white women from their own families and froends not to report rape and abuse and destroy their ‘respectable’ husband’s career because they all go into denial that this ‘upstanding’ man could have done such despicable things… also many white women get married early and have no skills or work experience and can’t see a life for themselves so submit to the rape and abuse for their whole lives…
I could go on… and I know I have generalised to make the point in a brief space… but south african men of all colours, classes and cultures are despicable animals… every day I’m ashamed by what south african men do to our women…
and no JR… you weren’t out of line… this is not a subject we should sweep under our blood-stained carpets…

Cape Town – There’s currently no offer on the table from the Golden Lions to lure the services of Springbok centre Frans Steyn to Johannesburg.
Steyn’s agent, Gerrie Swart, confirmed to the Volksblad newspaper last week that Steyn is considering a return to South Africa, which sparked renewed interest as to which union would be interested in Steyn’s services.
“We are busy negotiating with Racing (Steyn’s club in France). Frans will always consider playing in South Africa. He wants to play for the Springboks. But there is nothing concrete,” said Swart, who was in France discussing future plans with the Bok centre.
The Lions fought hard for Steyn’s services earlier this year when the union’s former business partner, Robert Gumede, was keen to lure the Springbok to the union. But the split between the GLRU and Gumede’s GUMA TAC-consortium put paid to such hopes at the time.
And Lions’ provisional CEO, Ruben Moggee, confirmed to the Rapport newspaper that they haven’t made any offer for Steyn.
This comes, despite their coach, John Mitchell admitting they would enjoy having a player of the calibre of Steyn on their books.
The Lions have since forged a new business partnership with businessman Altmann Allers, but it looks unlikely that they will spend big in the near future.

was quite hard to place a favourite.
hendrix won – eventually – because we’d both had a glass on wine…

Hendrix was, in my opinion, one of the greatest ever.
Sambora is technically very good.
Knoffler is also a genius, a unique style that is unmistakable.

If you stuck a bunch of the “greats” next to the technical wizards like Satriani, Vai, Morse, Petrucci not many of them would stack up on a “riff off”
But that’s not what their contribution is about.
It’s about the ground breaking work that they did, the songs the wrote and performed (particularly in Hendrix’s case as “live” was what he was all about.)
The icons they are.
There are many of them, and they are subject to constant scrutiny, in fact Rolling Stone just released their all time greatest list of guitarists.
You should read what Pete Townsend writes about Jimmi Hendrix. It sums it up the best.
At the end it’s just opinion, such as it is.

stevie ray vaughn, best guitarist of my era. 2nd would be Eddie VanHalen (roth days). watched an MTV unplugged show with joe satriani and SRV and joe made the mistake of singing. he sucked, however SRV was in his element and just blew the audience away on an acoustic guitair. the man was a legend but not sure if he was ever heard in southAfrica.
hendrix was the mozart of guitarist. a purist and technically superior to anyone since for his rock style and originality. not my cup of tea but as a muso u cant ever hope to reach his level of artistry.
george benson for a chilled talented easy listening riffs.
all talented and all contribute to the history of guitarists. like this site they present different flavours and colours to the world of music.

But there are too many to mention.
I’m a big Gary Moore fan.
Satriani, Vai, Vinnie Moore, Petrucci, Di Miola et al are great but tend to overplay a bit for my taste.
The oldies like Clapton, Blackmore, Page, Beck, Mcloughlin, Barre (Jethro Tull), Knoffler are great to listen too.
As are the american Blues players like SRV, Santana, Albert King, also great.
Too many to really mention, as soon as I click submit i will remember a whole bunch more.

Hendrix was a blues man first and foremost.. one the absolute best even as young kid he played for Little Richard in his backing band and they tried to shut him up cos they were scared he’d steal their thunder.. then the Animals toured the US and Animals lead guitarist saw this maestro and hijacked him to the UK… and history did the rest.

One of my favourites to listen to though.

Pity I had to leave asy night and could not take part in discussion , but I just read through the posts.It is obvious that each have their favourites and as the styles differ one cannot really say who is the best.Someone once wrote of the Rolling Stone Magazine top 100 rock guitarists of all time that Hendrix is number one and no 2-100 should all be no 2.
Interesting though that bloggers who contributed last night mainly named “older” playes as their favourites. Some of the more modern blokes are just as good- for example Tom Morello (Rage against the Machine) and Jack White (Stripes, Dead weather, Raconteurs)
Morello must certainly be on of the most creative and innovative rock guitarists ever- he might not be the fastest or most accurate but he certainly brought something different , “new and fresh” to the party at a time when things were becoming a bit stale.

I decided to rather give it a skip on Sunday – blokes are taking out more then they are allowed to and I do not really like to be part of that- have taken out my license though and will do some dives over the next few weeks.
I also read a guy drowned while diving for RL at Soetwater this weekend- interesting that ET was talking about Soetwater RL on Sat night, lol.
Here are many “cowboys” taking to the water these days- no training and just about zero experience – not saying the bloke who drowned was one of those – but if you look at some of them its only a miracle that we do not get more drownings.
And on your side? – still spearfishing using the kayak as dive- platform?

ja look, i have no respect for guys who take more than their quota. zero.
i belong to a club and we are pretty strict about the rules and regs. also pretty cool as i am getting to dive with guys who have a lot more experience than myself and so the learning curve is far more rapid.
thankfully the bug season is over here, allows me to concentrate on the spearfishing which is about as addictive a sport as i have ever known. hell, i am turning into a fitness freak just so i can extend my bottom time lol.
Got a few very nice bronze bream this weekend (all in the 3-4 kg mark) and a very nice bludged (fulvie) kingie too. dont really normally target the reefies but the viz didnt allow us to targe the pelagics unfortunately.
Just came back from blackrock (kosi bay area) two weeks ago. LoL we got taxed of our bludgers and kakaap by the biggest tiger i have ever seen. he towed my two mates around the ocean like they were matchsticks.
it was awesome!
i wanna dive for tuna in the cape now, thats on my bucket list.

Spearfishing tuna in the Cape waters has become quite popular but it is fairly extreme- they target yellow fin and longfin mainly i think.
It will be better to go with a professional charterer

Over 300 posts later and I was hoping for a far more mature dabate regarding the raping of South african women.
Surely if police officers (agents of the state) are raping innocent women of the public who are going about their daily lives, South Africa as a country is in serious trouble. I don’t know what the statistical racial bias is (black on white rape vs white on black rape) but regardless, if cricket can support breast cancer why the hell can Rugby not be a powerful light supporting the protection and plight of our mothers, sisters, girlfriends, daughters and wives (no particular order of importance!).
Where there is a will, there is a way. Wake up guys, look around you and get SARU to make it clear that rugby stands for the protection of our women and children, especially where state thugs are involved.
The question is: do the rugby authorities have the guts to do this as it will publicly embarass the ANC government.

I believe is the architect of Barca’s golden era is Frank Rijkaard,brought back winning culture back to Catalans.Also changed system to play the quicker-one-touch football but in his era they played with more flair & ridiculous trickery. I just believe now under Pep they are more clinical,slicker and more consistent.

Adam Thomson has had his two prized World Cup jerseys stolen from his home in a burglary.
The 29-year-old tweeted his misfortune after arriving home to find his Dunedin apartment ransacked in what he described as a ”meticulous” job.
Thomson, who has recently been overseas, posted the following tweet: ”Came home to find my apartment has been meticulously burgled. Real scum of society who think they have the right to invade a person’s home.”
He then followed a few minutes later with: ”I don’t care about the replaceable things, but what lowlife steals my worldcup test jerseys?”
It’s unclear how long Thomson’s home had been unattended but he played for the southern hemisphere side in the Heroes Rugby Challenge match in London last weekend to raise money for Britain’s injured servicemen and their families.
Some of his 5,226 twitter followers were quick to join in his anger and offer the 24-test All Black their support.
David Clegg summed up what most people will be thinking in tweeting: ”Wow that really sucks. I hope they catch the scumbag and give the All Blacks front row 5 minutes alone with them.”
Another tweeter offered hope that the thieves had not found Thomson’s World Cup winner’s medal.
Thomson played two matches at the World Cup before succumbing to injury and had a key role in the 37-17 win against France during pool play.
