RYAN VREDE, writing in Business Day Sport Monthly, says the late Solly Tyibilika was always fighting a losing battle.
Solly Tyibilika’s career died long before his life ended. Indeed, a strong argument can be made that his life ended because his career died.
The why and how are important in equal measure when reflecting on his career and life. Why Tyibilika, who, by all accounts, had become mixed up with elicitors of trouble, was murdered in a hail of bullets in a Gugelethu shebeen on a Sunday afternoon, was still under investigation at the time of writing. How the 32-year-old went from crossing the tryline on debut for the Springboks in 2004 to lying in police chalk lines seven years later, is compelling. It is the rugby tragedy of our time.
I was lunching with a Springbok and former team-mate of Tyibilika’s at the time the news of his death broke. As details of its nature emerged – a calculated, gang-style hit that saw his body pumped with what an eye witness deemed ‘countless shots’ – his reaction struck me as strange. Tyibilika’s violent end was not unexpected. Through at least 20 text messages the player showed me it became apparent that this sentiment was shared by even those players who were closest to him. Certainly his death was lamented in these messages, but it was telling that most senders were not particularly surprised by its nature.
‘When Solly felt cared for he was invested in his career and determined to succeed,’ the player said. ‘When he felt hard done by he could be pretty self-destructive.’
There were to be increasing instances when his emotional immaturity manifested in this manner as his career progressed. But this wasn’t always so. Tyibilika caught the Sharks’ eye in 2003 off the back of impressive performances for Griquas. He would establish himself as a regular member of their Super Rugby squad – his pace, upper-body strength, work rate and robust approach placing him among the top openside flankers in the country at the time. He lacked the finesse, guile, vision and tactical appreciation that separated the good scavengers from the great ones, but attained a level of consistency that appealed to Springbok coach Jake White in late 2004.
There were muted grumbles of a political agenda when Tyibilika was named in White’s end-of-year tour squad. However, the overriding feeling was that Tyibilika had the potential to develop into a more than competent Test player.
He acquitted himself well on debut against Scotland at Murrayfield, becoming the first black African to score a try for the Springboks. He started against Argentina in Buenos Aires a week later and maintained a high enough standard domestically in 2005 to be a part of White’s squad for the Test season. There had been little evidence to support rhetoric about the wealth of world-class black talent in Tyibilika’s home province, the Eastern Cape. Tyibilika, it appeared, would be a groundbreaker in this regard, particularly since he was a forward, a rare commodity in a region renowned for producing backline players.
Then something happened that hinted at a delinquent demon that would surface with greater and lesser degrees of intensity as his career progressed. The Springboks staged a Test in East London against Uruguay. Tyibilika scored twice in the 134-3 rout and later invited friends who had travelled from his hometown, New Brighton, up to his hotel room to share a celebratory drink. He left three days later, having missed the team’s flight to Durban and depleting most of his not inconsiderable match fee.
Still, there were glimpses of brilliance that inspired. A month later Tyibilika would outplay Australian George Smith in a Tri-Nations Test at Ellis Park, before being injured and substituted at half-time by Schalk Burger.
The Springboks won 33-20 but Tyibilika only featured in the southern hemisphere showpiece again a year later, playing in losing sides in three Tests, although not looking an impostor in elevated company. This was particularly pertinent, given that in a post-match press conference a week before, White had intimated that Tyibilika was included because of the colour of his skin. There was a clamour for the in-form Luke Watson’s inclusion after the Springboks suffered a 49-0 defeat to Australia in Brisbane, but White explained his decision to go with Tyibilika, in light of Danie Rossouw’s tour-ending injury, saying: ‘We need to be honest about sensitivities of the make-up of the team and show that transformation is happening in our country. We have got a guy like Solly on tour. There is a relationship in a team structure and we need to be considerate to that dynamic between the players.’
In Burger’s injury-enforced absence White later called Tyibilika the best openside flank in the country prior to the Loftus Test against New Zealand. The 47 minutes Tyibilika played in that heavy defeat would be his last for the Springboks.
This had much to do with a move to the Lions in 2007, one, he said, necessitated by the lack of game time he was getting in Durban. Breaking into the World Cup squad was his top priority and White had offered assurances that he was in the planning for the tournament. Eager to make a good impression on his new employers, Tyibilika trained relentlessly in the off-season and was unrivalled in the conditioning stakes when tests were conducted in camps in preparation for the Super Rugby campaign. However, his contribution amounted to little more than hit-outs in a couple of pre-season friendlies. Deemed surplus to requirements, Tyibilika was relegated to the Vodacom Cup side, where, he claimed, the coach wasn’t aware of his demotion and not prepared to integrate him into his plans. Thus began Tyibilika’s descent, marked by regular absenteeism and an ever-declining appetite for the game and its demands. His hunger for hedonism grew in direct proportion. He was relegated to club rugby. This a year after playing the All Blacks. The Lions released him from his R700 000-a-year contract. His ambition of breaking into the World Cup squad lay in tatters. He would end up watching the final in an East London shebeen.
The South African Rugby Union (Saru) made weak attempts at rehabilitating a man it once claimed to have great faith in. The Lions are even more culpable. Certainly Tyibilika must not be mitigated for his self-destructive behaviour, but he was failed by those who professed to have his interests at heart.
He is not alone in this regard. There have been varying levels of incompetence and irresponsibility in Saru’s dealings with black players specifically. Top South African coach Heyneke Meyer relayed the story of Chiliboy Ralepelle and Hilton Lobberts’ selection to tour Europe with the Springboks in 2006 to me. Ralepelle and Lobberts were among the best in their positions in the world at U19 level. Prior to their announcement in the squad Meyer pleaded with Saru not to take them, citing their emotional and physical immaturity and stressing that they would be better equipped two years from then.
Lobberts is said to have blown the R400 000 he made on two Volkswagen GTIs, supporting Meyer’s former assertion. He hasn’t played for South Africa in five years and hasn’t looked close to doing so. Ralepelle struggled with recurring injuries thereafter, lending support to the latter offering. He also suffered at the hands of national coaches who told the world he was rugby royalty, but treated him like a leper.
There are others who exhibited a capacity to overcome setbacks, former Springbok wing Ashwin Willemse being the prime example. Despite being plagued by injuries, Willemse refused to allow his spirit to be killed. He regained fitness and was included in the 2007 World Cup squad. He now has a burgeoning career as an analyst on SuperSport that is far removed from the path his life could have followed had he opted to surrender to Hope’s assassin and return to the drug and gang culture that was a feature of his childhood. Tyibilika didn’t possess Willemse’s immense resolve. His tendency for self-sabotage demanded that he had a strong mentor, even a team of them, who could constantly reinforce his value, celebrate his talent and be prepared to talk hard when needed. In addition, he also needed brutal honesty and a clearly defined goal from his coaches. Instead he found the validation and emotional investment he sought from men who fuelled the beast within.
There is no question that Tyibilika was a fundamentally good man whose life course diverted from a route that promised a rich legacy to one that led to a premature and deeply saddening end. But that alone doesn’t warrant bringing his story into the national consciousness.
There are lessons in Tyibilika’s life and his violent death that must be heeded by the game’s administrators. History reflects that professional black athletes, specifically those from low socio-economic backgrounds, are more prone to delinquency than their white counterparts. A range of explanations has been offered for this, the primary one being the former’s generally underdeveloped emotional intelligence and life skills which compromises their capacity to adequately deal with their ascent from paupers to princes. This rings true for South African rugby players, where that division between privileged and poor is even more pronounced.
This is the stark education that Tyibilika’s story must provide. It is utterly unacceptable that 16 years into the professional era the game’s administrators still haven’t established a world-class programme that focuses on equipping young black players with the skills needed to negotiate challenges they will encounter in their careers. This must be an issue that commands immediate attention.
Tyibilika possessed some measure of fight even in the last moments, dragging his bullet-riddled body across the ground for a couple of metres in search of help. His physical wounds ultimately proved to be mortal, but the mental wounds he incurred in the latter part of his professional career had long since killed his spirit. How different it could all have been had someone cared for him enough to make his mind bulletproof.

Some good points despite the Barbara Cartland prose. Players from disadvantaged backgrounds all over the world often struggle to cope with success without guidance. I agree that ligeskills should be a consideration when equipping young players for the job. A lot of the most successful sports teams in the world pay ablot of attention to the education and preparation of their talent for life whether they become stars or not. We can certainly do more in this regard.

Lots of people are suddenly thrust into an unfamiliar world of money and influence and they have to sink or swim. They win an election to a high office, or score a lotto prize or inherit a fortune or get a high-paid job or whatever. They really aren’t “victims” but “fortunates” and ought to be seen as such. It’s ridiculous for them to be wrapped around by fretting, tut-tutting worriers who are invariably less fortunate, wealthy or influential than what they are. The Lucky One has to harden up.

This article is likely to start another “transformation”, “quota player” debate.
What is apparent in my opinion is that the treatment of talented black players is far from ideal, and they function in an environment that can be particularly tough. They are often elevated before they are physically and emotionally ready (Chiliboy and Jantjes, for example) and if they struggle, they are then derided in the press and called “quota players” by supporters.
This does however fit into a broader problem in South African rugby of poor talent development.
In the cases of Chiliboy and Jantjes, luckily they have decent provincial coaches who are willing to invest in them, despite the damage done by the national coach.
Interestingly, the Bulls have a pretty good track-record with black players, from Mametsa to Chiliboy to Dlulane, Ndungane and Heini Adams to name a few. All players who have been well supported and played an important part in the success of the Bulls. Dlulane was given a job at the Bulls after breaking his neck, for example.

@TheTackler-2: The Kiwis have support systems for their players. This is especially evident in the NRL, with their life skills programmes, but also in rugby union. See the support given to Zac Guildford for example. Exactly the same reasons have been used for his problems – instant fame and fortune – and the NZRU are going to absurd lengths to support him and teach him life skills.

@Transformation-4: The point is that all those players have received a lot of ongoing support (apart from Helberg who was a bit of a nothing player), often from within the team environment, and have been given plenty of opportunities.
This is not something that was afforded to Solly. There was no plan for him, or direction given. If this was the case for Guildford, or Cowan or Cipriani, they would likely end up in a similar place as Solly – contract torn up, and playing club rugby.

So many thoughts going through my mind here. The entire issue can be avoided in sports & business if there were no quotas or BBBEE.
Who puts the coaches in a position to pick younger players (CHilliboy & Lobberts) when they aer not ready?
Who expects the unions to transform at the top level of sports & not at the grass routes?
Who expects a 80% winning record (or at least wants one), tells the coaches that they have to pick a number of players that they might not really believe in, and puts them in a non-workable position?
I apportion the blame largely to the politicians & SARFU management who install a mandate without the support structures in place to assist that mandate.
I am not exonerating the blame from the players & the unions themselves, they too need to accept responsibility for not abiding by the rules they have in place, but essentially in sport & business, you are accountable for a number, its either a win ratio, a sales number, a operating income number, a target of people you support or whatever, you have a number.
When that number is going to be influenced by mitigating factors out of your control, you never fully assume responsibility for it, so the coaches hide behind the issue of transformation. That said, I dont see how a national or provincial coach is expected to win & play players who he deems not good enough.
This article is not an attack on Solly, players of colour, white players or anything like that. Its an attack on the ridiculous system that we have in South Africa that seeks to address injustices of the past, by instilling 180 degree turn arounds, and does not think that there will be equally disastrous outcomes.
Why dont we blame Hollywood for not instilling proper support structures for new actors who shoot to fame, then blow their money on drugs, fast cars & woman. Some of them die in tragic circumstances too.
I will tell you why, cause there are no quotas in hollywood forcing people who are not talented enough into acting, so nobody really gives a damn if some young thundercat chooses a life that he is not responsible enough to handle, goes off the rails because he is too immature to handle the rewards that come with that lifestyle.

The question for me is not talent. Talent is there, but we all know raw talent is not enough.
It is how that talent is identified, developed and maintained including the time frames it is done in and the goals that you are trying to achieve.
The day we stop playing a numbers game in transforming the game, is the day we will start seeing success.

No real good comes from revolutions. People die, governments fall, hatred manifests between those benefiting & those who are suffering as a result.

so all white comes from ‘high’ socio-economic backgrounds… and all people from low socio-economic backgrounds are black and coloured…??
how many other black or coloured players have proved prone to delinquency…?

we have all heard stories of rugby players doing delinquent things… just during the world cup the senior springboks stole a sign-post… a delinquent action… yet you don’t write that white players are prone to delinquency… despite lots of proof… why not?

to extrapolate the misfortunes of Tybilika over all black and coloured players is a crass generalisation…
IMO… the point should be made that SARU (and all sports bodies in South Africa and around the world) should have mandated counseling programs for ALL young players selected into positions where they make vast amounts of money. i believe it has nothing to do with colour, culture, creed or socio-economic background… it has everything to do with age and maturity and self-esteem…
we can all conjure up examples of good and bad examples of every colour from every background who have made it against the odds or lost it in spite of the odds…
when in south Africa are we going to start seeing people as people… nothing more… nothing less… just individual human beings… and stop categorizing and judging them by their skin colour…

Mandates in rugby are handed down from one level to the next, either officially or unofficially.
The new buzz-word for official ‘quotas’ is ‘responsibility’. You will often hear rugby officials say there are no official ‘quotas’ but they have a social ‘responsibility’ to transform the game of rugby.
It is government policy to do this, not that of Fikile or even Hoskins. So if they leave or when they are replaced by other individuals the words might change but the game will remain the same.
My problem personally with all of this is not that transformation is needed, but since SA became independent there has not been one sustainable plan implemented to achieve this. And by sustainable plan I mean short term goals and targets which can be achieved but with the main aim of achieving long term success or ‘real’ change.
Solly is but one case, and a sad one at that given how it ended. Our leaders (within rugby and government) are destroying the lives of those they are supposed to be helping and they are too stupid to see it.

My opinion is that Solly should in all likelihood not have been chosen at the time. He knew it, he started to “cruise” soon after.
There have been better “players of colour” that have deserved it more and never gotten that opportunity.
Many early success stories are like that.
I can name many young promising guys who reached some level quicker that they were expected and struggled to cope with all the fame and attention that came with it.
I think it’s patronizing to suggest that black players are somehow special in this regard.
What about all the PSL soccer players that get signed and are suddenly all the rage? Most of them seem to cope one way or another, there are some exceptions, just like there are in many sorts.
To say that Solly was hung out to dry is nonsense in my opinion.
You could say the same thing about any person who achieves early success in any field. Entertainment, business, anything really.
Should there be a support group for early achievers in life now??

What do the elite soccer players in SA earn compared to that of rugby players? Also not following the roundball game much, does soccer players enjoy (or not enjoy) the celebrity status in SA that their rugby counterparts do, from the same ages?
Personally I don’t know many 20-or-so year old’s that earns R1-mil or close to a year?

Look across the globe and beyond the realms of race-sensitive SA and you will see it is fairly common knowledge that people from low socio-economic backgrounds are more prone to burn out when they suddenly find themselves with heaps of cash around them.

I think that the reason this article came around is because it has happened to a black player.
There was no such article when Etienne Botha dies in a car crash at 3am.
The problem is that the consencus of th overriding belief by the members of parliament & governiing ministers are all in fact equally racist/generalist:
In SA, if you are white you have been advantaged and should know better
In SA, if you are black you are disadvantaged and the government should support you better
Unfortunately the situation is not as ‘black & white’ as that. Your article highlights a great point that I was trying to make, but not as eloquently as yours. It has nothing to do with colour, but in SA we make it about colour. We enforce quotas, then we justify this through generalisations about behavioural patterns etc etc.
I go back to my point, its not the role of the employer to hire the best person for the job, then put him on a program to help him deal with his salary. Thats a joke. Ultimately, when the employee loses his job for poor performance (being passed over for a promotion, then not showing up at work for 3 days cause he was on a booze bender), why is it the responsibility of thr employer to council this person.
My contrntion is that if the right person was hired in the first placem these situations would be far less common.
That said – the more we dont hire the right person (for whatever reason), the chancess of success are far less.

more an advisory group… to give young guys financial advice, investment advice, media advice, how to cope with childhood friends who may be much poorer than you, drug and stimulant advice… also that a sports career is not forever and they need to secure their futures financially as soon as they can…
that sort of thing… so that he doesn’t suddenly get a pay check of a few hundred grand and immediately blow it on cars and partying…

Another thing I wanted to add. How many 20-year old or mid-20′s individuals that have achieved great success in any field are from these communities in question? I would imagine that there are some, but the ratio would probably be the same as we see in rugby – those who succeed and fail or fall victim to drugs/alcohol/name it traps because of their success?

@PissAnt-23: I think the problem rugby will always face in SA is that it is far easier for politicians to throw buzz words around and be seen to be doing the right thing than it is to actually implement initiatives to address the problem correctly from the bottom up. At the moment they get to do all the shouting and finger pointing with zero accountability. They’re having their cake and eating it whilst the people on the front lines take all the heat.

This is a sporting phenomenon around the world. Look at the UK soccer guys. Always someone getting up to some career ending nonsense. It’s not confined to sport either. In any area of life where success comes to you young you are going to struggle to cope with it.
I think to racialise it is patronising.
Sure, not too many end up getting murdered in a shebeen, sure, but I think in this instance it had nothing to do with rugby or his popularity IMO. His mates were also taken out.
They weren’t hung out to dry.
He is just a guy who got into the wrong stuff who’s job once happened to be a rugby player.
I’m sorry that he’s gone, in the same way that I’m sorry that the hundreds who are murdered in SA every day are gone.
A waste all. They were sons, daughters, mothers and fathers.
The difference between many of them and Solly was that Solly had his shot once a while ago. And he blew it quite frankly.

i still think however that whatever the color or socio-economic background yong players should have the advice counseling as i outlines above…
for example…
if you win the lotto in SA… they offer every winner counseling advice from investing the money to handling the ‘fame’ and sudden wealth and how to deal with friends and money-grabbers you line up outside your door…
they offer that for every winner, whether you’re a rich or poor person, black or white…. it has nothing to do with what you are or are not as a person but everything to do with your sudden wealth… which is exactly what happens to every young person suddenly chosen for a top international sporting career…
if the lotto can recognize the need for such advice why can’t saru and other sporting bodies…?

@PissAnt-29: It’s not a rugby issue. I started my career in Private Banking, I saw many young black professionals (accountants and attorneys) who had started to earn a bit of money and managed themselves very badly. Bad Debt judgements, stuff like that. They were seemingly less equipped to manage their success, obviously because, for example, it’s likely that their parents would not have owned their own cars or had bank loans in many cases. They didn’t grow up with a first world concept of debt. There is a consequence to them as a result.
Where does it end?
Can our education system do better at equipping people at younger ages with good life skills? Absolutely. There is so much to be done, but to make this a SARU hung him out to dry issue is ridiculous IMO.

I disagree, and the Botha scenario is very different. The guy died tragically in an accident not because of a result of his lifestyle.
Solly’s death was no accident, it was a result of hundreds of things that ended up with him being involved in the type of lifestyle that was bound to get him shot and killed at some stage.
Another point; It should not be ‘hiring the best guy for the job and then put him on a program’ – that is exactly why transformation in rugby is failing.
Start the program before he is ‘employed’ in an elitist environment so when he does reach those heights he is prepared for it and those skills can then just be re-enforced from time to time.

The largest portion of this country’s population is black/coloured. The largest portion of that group lives in poverty. Poverty is a breeding ground for drugs, crime and all that **** we read in the paper. Most importantly, opportunities for individuals in those groups are very few and far between to break away from and do something different with you life. They lack basic education to achieve this but more so the social structures to support it being surrounded by the ‘easy’ way out (gangs and drugs) – it is a way of life in those communities.
So Ryan is right, although there are exceptions like there always will be, the chances of an individual that grows up in a stable, safe, and supportive environment falling into a life of crime and drugs are much lower than those who are exposed to that type of life every day from an early age.
We tend to forget, these individuals we talk about share one common thing with those ‘more advantaged’ – they just want to play the game of rugby.
They love rugby in Guguletu as much as they do Waterkloof. The goal should always have been to provide them with the same tools in life to develop into world class players in Guguletu similar to what they have in Waterkloof, or Paarl.
Not all of them will succeed, similar to how not all white kids succeed even with the best structures – but at least you are giving them the best chance to.
The ‘products’ our transformation programs are producing is a clear indication of its lack of success.

Leaders who aren’t being charged with corruption, rape etc, or who aren’t speeding through red robots killing innocent bystanders along the way with no consequence.

I guess he wasn’t bust again for mach fixing, but let’s be honest here, judging by what Hersch wrote in his book, it hardly seems to have put the breaks on his lifestyle.
If he wasn’t as supremely talented as he was he would have fallen out the bus much earlier. He was lucky to get away with it really.
The point is really that yes, some support at all levels is always required. But to suggest that they are to blame is to abdicate responsibility in a very reckless manner IMO.

We don’t much “mentor” lotto winners, sudden heirs, kids who become rock or movie or golf superstars. It’s patronising to treat them like primary school children who need chaperones and overseers. They grow up in their own time and at their own pace. And, if some fall by the wayside, (think Hendrix, Joplin, Winehouse, Morrison, Lohan, Maradona, Best etc) we just shrug and move on. It’s not our fault and neither is it our duty. They’re adults. It’s their own life and their own lookout.

There”s a lot of rather superficial comments, like Tacklers, that totally ignore the immense cultural background between black and white players in South Africa, that black players are expected to bridge and fit into. In almost all aspects they’re outsiders and strangers. This is also probably the reason why coloured players don’t have the same attrition rate.

Is it a cricketer who cannot play TEST cricket for his country of birth, S.A., but can play ODIs and T20 because the former is played in WHITE flannels while the later is played in all sorts of s bright, eye-catching “coloured” team strips?
Or is it, perhaps, an association football player who cannot play for Real Madrid or Leeds United(Mighty Whites),at home, or a rugby player who cannot likewise play for England because their home strips all are of the purist white; but they can play away for said teams because away strips always are “coloured”?

That despite a great help from Jonker, Pro Legota, Craig Joubert and few other referees.
That was also Chiliboi’s first season as a regular in the Bulls’ line up, now go figure the compound revenue losses incurred for the Bulls organization compared to 2009 & 2010 seasons?

@cane-57: Thats one little excerpt Cane, and out of context. Read Jake’s book for a more complete account. His logic is sound though – even in that excerpt. There are team dynamics and often a guy who has had exposure to the team is a better bet then a newbie.
SBW didnt replace Nonu, even though Nonu wasnt looking that hot and SBW set the world alight in S15. Dagg still had to watch Nils take the field. just 2 of hundreds of examples in various teams.
There are exceptions like Cruden being called up before Donald, and there is a place for that too.
Luke had never been a Bok and Solly had never lost a Test. Jake was right in asking how can he justify calling up Luke to the team and to Solly.

Those comments by JW if true, are as bad, as those he alleges were made against him to make him pick watson.
That right there is the problem with SA, corruption and amateur strong-arm heavies at every level – all that rubbish needs to be brought right into the open immediately – and whoever makes those offers must be hung out to dry and get taken to the cleaners as well. Strictly speaking rugby, he was inadequate for that level, interesting that RV opted to ignor what happened in 2005!
JW did select Solly in 2006 but that was a trick to deny Luke Watson a place in the squad!

this time hondo is correct, Solly was used by White to avoid Watson at all costs, he even said as much in the media when he intimated Solly was a transformation choice ahead of Watson at the time.
As capable and talented as Solly might have been in a correctly framed context within the team dynamic under more wholesome circumstances, he was simply used as a pawn in White’s instinctual self preservation game at a time when the imminent inclusion of Watson was staring him blindly in the face, which he could not and cowardly refused to accept or do.
