Cash-strapped Lions tighten belts
18 Dec 2011
The Golden Lions Rugby Union insists it will be able to pay its players despite having ‘financial difficulties’.
GLRU deputy president Altmann Allers told the Sunday Times that the union is in ‘the process of huge restructuring’ and that ‘people have been retrenched’, but dismissed reports that player salaries would not be paid this month.
‘I wonder if the rumours will go away when the players get paid this week?’ Allers countered. ‘It is true that we are going through some financial difficulties but the players’ salaries will not be affected. I don’t know if it is a misunderstanding or if someone misinterpreted the situation, but we are going to meet our obligations in 2012 and beyond. We are in financial difficulty but that is exactly why we are cutting back.
‘There are a number of players whose contracts we didn’t renew,’ he added, careful not to go into specifics. ‘We are in negotiations to terminate [the contracts of] 13 others.’
Allers estimates the union will have 40 to 45 senior contracted players in 2012, 30 fewer than last season.

@David-898: what about the ‘two black wingers’ syndrome still steadfastly being adhered to by 99 percent of saffa provincial teams?does white rugby playing south africa really wants to change or do they see mandela’s plea to the irb back then to unban them as hitting the jackpot….and refusing to share with the rest?

900@…David lolololol that was funny, u men r useless navigators.

@mvk-901:
The problem is that SA rugby is living in the past. The game is based on perceived “traditional” South African strengths and values which tends to preclude a lot of the different talents brought by black players.
Anyway, I could go on about this for a while, but dinner calls.

@Treehugger-902:
No, we just find it difficult to follow orders.

@David-904: @Treehugger-905: Men do hate the old line “were lost, just ask for directions”. When I’m told that I just can’t help but get stubborn…and then proceed to get more lost then before

@David-903:
Did you see Herschelle’s innings today in the Aussie domestic 20/20. He was on fire.
Scored a 50 odd off 36 balls facing Shaun Tate bowling 150 plus.

@David-903: Indeed. I’m still amazed that Cecil Africa has not been given a shot at higher honours. I’d love to see him run out for my beloved Cheetahs
Ebersohn and Cecil running at any defense is a daunting prospect when they are on form.

@Sasori-907:
We’re not lost, just reorientating ourselves.
@Jeraldjay-908:
I reckon he still might have a future with the Proteas.
22 Dec 2011, 21:18 pm
@David-910: Gary Kirsten sticking with Boucher, might as well bring Gibbs into the 20/20 setup.
This Aussie sabbatical will do wonders for Herschelle’s game.

@Jeraldjay-911:
I agree. I reckon Garys time in India has taught him a lot about talent. Have you noticed the change in Kallis? He’s far more aggressive and exhibiting the flair that excited me when I first saw him and I suspect that Gary has given him that freedom, as opposed to an anchor role.
22 Dec 2011, 21:42 pm
@Sasori-909:
Yup, he’d be a natural 15 or even 10. Apparently his 7s position is equal to a 10 or sweeper, rather than the winger that most class him as,
22 Dec 2011, 21:51 pm
@David-912: A Kallis with the attitude of a Gibbs would just be demonic, I would not want to bowl to that.
The only thing with Cecil is he is really small and his channel would be targeted if played at 10.This potential weakness would be minimized at wing, but depending on his skill under the highball, positioning ability I would think his best use would be at 15.
Unfortunately we don’t create enough space in South African professional rugby to really utilize a guy like Cecil. But perhaps at either the Lions or Cheetahs he could be devastating at Super rugby level.

@David-912:
I’m I bit concerned whether Gary can rid the Proteas of the choker label especially in one day cricket. He had no baggage going into the Indian position.
We all know the like Bok rugby, the players in the Proteas set up makes most of the calls. Gary has played with the nucleus of the players in the current set up so will he be able to make the difficult decisions.
22 Dec 2011, 22:13 pm
@Sasori-914:
He’d be wasted at wing.
@Jeraldjay-915:
I’ve faith in Gary, especially after his India experience.
Anyway, night guys.

Afrika would not cut it in the bigger 15 man game, he’s perfectly suited to 7′s… and if he tried to step up to 15 man rugby his talents would be negated and he’d be out of his league and exposed, he needs the space that 7′s provides, 15′s is far too tightly marked and physical for a player of Afrika’s stature.
As for this moered in the head ignoramus dunce… @stormer in a teacup-846: seems some idiots not only need re education in terms of Pagan ritualism but they also need re education in history…. what is it they simply yet to understand…??
