Cash-strapped Lions tighten belts

Cash-strapped Lions tighten belts

The Golden Lions Rugby Union insists it will be able to pay its players despite having ‘financial difficulties’.

GLRU deputy president Altmann Allers told the Sunday Times that the union is in ‘the process of huge restructuring’ and that ‘people have been retrenched’, but dismissed reports that player salaries would not be paid this month.

‘I wonder if the rumours will go away when the players get paid this week?’ Allers countered. ‘It is true that we are going through some financial difficulties but the players’ salaries will not be affected. I don’t know if it is a misunderstanding or if someone misinterpreted the situation, but we are going to meet our obligations in 2012 and beyond. We are in financial difficulty but that is exactly why we are cutting back.

‘There are a number of players whose contracts we didn’t renew,’ he added, careful not to go into specifics. ‘We are in negotiations to terminate [the contracts of] 13 others.’

Allers estimates the union will have 40 to 45 senior contracted players in 2012, 30 fewer than last season.

application was about to be brought before the North Gauteng High Court in a bid to force the department to abide with the ruling of the Regional Court.

Modise said a statement on the matter would be released by the department shortly.

He insisted that the department did not agree with the order that the pair be released on parole.

“We are not happy with the court order. We want to challenge this.”

Tiedt and Van Schalkwyk were among a group of four men convicted of killing a homeless man and assaulting another at a park in Pretoria in 2001. They were each sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.

Van Schalkwyk and Tiedt have served three years of the sentence.

The remaining two were being held in another prison and not included in the release order.

    AP

Adolf B, left, sits in a courtroom in Nuremberg.

A German court on Monday jailed a pensioner for two years and eight months for having *** with his daughter over three decades, but threw out charges he repeatedly raped her.

Sexual relations between 69-year-old Adolf Bergbauer and his now 46-year-old daughter had been consensual, the court in the southern German city of Nuremberg ruled.

But it sentenced him to the jail term for incest and coercion.

Bergbauer had been charged with nearly 500 counts of rape, but while he admitted *** with his daughter in testimony before the court, he denied he raped her, saying she had consented.

Prosecutors however said he started to rape his daughter when she was 12, fathering three children with her, and had demanded 14 years behind bars for the defendant. They said they would consider an appeal.

Judge Guenther Heydner said the court had not been able to conclude that the daughter was forced into sexual relations through violence.

“With testimony which changed in key aspects from charge to charge, we could not establish proof,” he said.

Bergbauer, who is illiterate and used to work as an occasional labourer, claimed the first sexual contact took place when she was 17. “She was a willing participant,” he insisted.

He said they had consensual *** around twice a week.

However, according to prosecutors, the daughter said he raped her in her parents’ bedroom, in her own room and later in the woods in the back of his car.

She also said he forced her into *** at knife-point, which Bergbauer strenuously denied.

Of the three sons born as a result, two died and the other is handicapped. – AFP

Good god Keo is a warzone today. That Capo, the internet cliche of “I cant tell if a troll or just stupid” really applies to that ******.

Suarez is a real ****…a waste of space, there are few people I hate, and he is one…..the attitudes that soccer players have is part of the reason I cannot watch the game anymore.

Just because you can never have enough Stormers stories, this from news 24:

    By Jody Hendricks

The Stormers released a packed pre-season calendar of events ahead of the 2012 Super 15 competition. Some mouthwatering clashes await rugby fans in the Mother City with the Cape side playing home games against the Boland, Lions and Sharks as well as an away match against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth.

They’ve named a pre-season training squad of 53 players. All of them will be involved in the pre-season matches before the squad is trimmed down to 30 players for the Super 15.

This is a fairly young and inexperienced squad compared to previous years. They have lost several key players to overseas clubs and other SA unions. Team management is likely to select second string sides against Boland and the Kings while experimenting with combinations and fringe players in the Neo Africa Tri-Series.

The weakness in the squad is at Flyhalf and Centre. They don’t have an experienced no 10 and the only recognized flyhalf, Peter Grant is only expected back in the Cape after the doing duty in Japan.

The Stormers are also looking thin in the midfield. They failed to secure a deal with Former Springbok centre Adrian Jacobs and the departure of Jacques Fourie to Japan, Tim Whitehead to the Sharks and Johan Sadie to the Bulls has left them with very little back-up to stalwarts Jean De Villiers and Juan De Jongh.

They have however recruited some new players. Former Springbok prop, Deon Caarstens, Bulls wing Gerhard van der Heever, Fullback Joe Pietersen from France, Flyhalf Burton Frances from the Lions and former Springbok scrumhalf Bolla Conradie, who was instrumental in helping Boland win the Currie Cup first division title last season have all been included. The team will also be boosted by the return of lock Andries Bekker, the tallest player in Springbok history has recovered from a long injury lay-off and is expected to play a vital leadership role in the team. .

The Cape Side will be depending on other experienced players like Bryan Hababa, Gio Aplon, Duane Vermeulen, Captain Schalk Burger, Tiaan Liebenberg and the midfield combo of Jean De Villiers and Juan De Jongh to spearhead their attack. While youngsters like Siya Kolisi, Danie Poolman, Nick Fenton-Wells and Rynhardt Elstadt are expected to make a major impact in the tournament.

    The Stormers training squad
Gio Aplon, Reuben Johannes, Donovan Armandt, Rohan Kitshoff, Andries Bekker, Steven Kitshoff , Wicus Blaauw, Berton Klaasen, Tom Botha, Siya Kolisi, Marcel Brache, Nick Koster, Schalk Burger, Adrian Kritzinger, Nizaam Carr, Deon Carstens, Clement Lewis, Demetri Catrakilis, Tiaan Liebenberg, Kurt Coleman, Hilton Lobberts, Bolla Conradie, Frans Malherbe, Juan de Jongh, Scarra Ntubeni, Jean de Villiers, Joe Pietersen, JP du Plessis, Danie Poolman, Dewaldt Duvenage, Quinn Roux, Rynhardt Elstadt, Louis Schreuder, Eben Etzebeth, De Kock Steenkamp, Nick Fenton-Wells, Tim Swiel, Schalk Ferreira, Ricky Schroeder, Deon Fourie, Gary van Aswegen, Burton Francis, Gerhard van den Heever, Peter Grant, Hein van der Merwe, Nic Groom, Michael van der Spuy, Bryan Habana, Willem van Wyk, Brok Harris, Allister Vermaak, Yaya Hartzenberg, Duane Vermeulen

Pity about Chavanga being released by the Lions.
Was at the game in East London when he scored those 6 tries against Urugauy.
Also met Roberto Cannesa that day, the guy that survived the Urugauy Rugby team plane crash in the Andes. This guy and a few others survived a plane crash in the Andes and was kept alive by eating their fellow team mates who died in the crash.

@Jeraldjay-673: directly after that match, the drunk, Solly T went on a 3 day drinking binge. I wonder why the Bok captain and his provincial captain, Mr Plod kept quiet?

Rather a drunk than a puke player like Watson in the team. You just have to admire the thinking of the fat boys.

Oh and rugby journalist, such as Keo were culpable by keeping Solly’s addiction a secret.

@Bod-671: scarra is that wee little hooker that they have, nothing to write home about …. If Liebenberg pulls up lame they will be left with that blind one eyed hooker who is not straight – you could say that his throwing style into the lineout is brokeback  – and they will have the terror know as Scarra.

@Dawn-678: why did Keo not expose his drinking ways earlier, what was his motive? Can you imagine the hits he would have generated if he reported on the wet party that Solly had with his bro’s and ho’s.

  • 680.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@Bod-671: He’s a hooker. met him, he played in some of the warm up games, very promising. He’s not a small fella, bigger than Deon, maybe even as Tiaan, quite chunky, and young. Part of the new school coming through.

His name is Siya, but since there are 2 of them they call him Scarra.

Expect him to get some game time in the league this year. He has a lot of promise.

  • 681.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@Dawn-675: It had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with class in his case, of which he has clearly none.

I’d be amazed if he was able to log on tomorrow after his comment to Treehugger earlier quite frankly.

Calling someone a “wh ite B!tch” is tantamount to hate speech IMO.

If he said that in my company he’d leave the room with his head held high

    and his feet held higher.

Last year we needed more than 5 flyhalves lol.

I think that fact that we are trialling so many of them obviously speaks to our potential weakness in that area.
