Cash-strapped Lions tighten belts
18 Dec 2011
The Golden Lions Rugby Union insists it will be able to pay its players despite having ‘financial difficulties’.
GLRU deputy president Altmann Allers told the Sunday Times that the union is in ‘the process of huge restructuring’ and that ‘people have been retrenched’, but dismissed reports that player salaries would not be paid this month.
‘I wonder if the rumours will go away when the players get paid this week?’ Allers countered. ‘It is true that we are going through some financial difficulties but the players’ salaries will not be affected. I don’t know if it is a misunderstanding or if someone misinterpreted the situation, but we are going to meet our obligations in 2012 and beyond. We are in financial difficulty but that is exactly why we are cutting back.
‘There are a number of players whose contracts we didn’t renew,’ he added, careful not to go into specifics. ‘We are in negotiations to terminate [the contracts of] 13 others.’
Allers estimates the union will have 40 to 45 senior contracted players in 2012, 30 fewer than last season.

I haven’t seen you guys much this year. But wishing you all every blessing a wonderful holiday.
A little snow falling outside. I should not complain it is very late.
But here’s a greeting said much better than me.

well that was it
You all missed it
21st December , winter solstice in NH and summer solstice in SH, zenith point of turning from winter to summer, and vice versa, shortest or longest day or night depending which side of equator you at.
So you all got your dates screwd up, because some dilly Roman decided it was around Dec 25th you gone and missed your pagan ritual festival day, you planning your bloody debauchery for the wrong day, its just gone.
Santa’s been and gone already and so has JC superstar, too bad you missed it but its happened and is already gone. Better try again for better luck next time.

@Roar my Lions …. Currie Cup Champions 2011-708: i see the Oirish have imposed quotas on their clubs, so all those saffas that apparently left because of quotas here in SA are in a bit of a pickle.
@stormersboy-748: anyway, i was trying to say suarez for me is no different from darren scott. he says in uruguay the word “negrito” is not malicious and only means “little black fella”. now that could be the case but my question is why that word popped numerously in HEATED moments of the match. he is not friends with evra so why would he think referring to him as a wee black fella is appropriate?
both he & john terry should be punished!

Who says anyone missed anything. We dont celebrate the solstices or the equinoxes. The amount of daylight in a day does not require special commemoration. Meaning is attached to events. It is not inherent. We haven’t planned anything for the wrong day. There is nothing to stop you dancing around naked and baying at the moon if you want to any day of the year. You have no idea about what we want to do, and how, so keep your phony philosophical judgemental krapola mutterings to yourself. Happy solstice. I hope the ivy didn’t scratch your scrotum during the virgin sacrifice.

For the sad sorry posts of Dec.21 , clearly there is not a bell that rings and therefore there can be no angel with wings!
In these troubled S.African times let me give purpose and direction to the problem here and in the world of sport and that is? RACISM
INCIDENCE ‘A’
Part 1. – Suarez BANNED for RACIAL ABUSE
Part 2.- Suarez VERDICT a STAND against RACISM
Part 3. – Suarez determined to RESTORE image
INCIDENCE ‘B’
Part 1. – Chelsea’s Terry facing RACIST CHARGES.
Part 2. – Terry denies RACISM CLAIM
These are the headlines thusfar of two high-profile world football players’ RACIAL incidences.
Everyone here knows this topic in sport in general is my prime concern to educate all the many LOUTS that prevail here.
Part 2 of INCIDENCE ‘A’ avails itself well in that regard here; it is a TEACHING MOMENT supreme.
22 Dec 2011, 07:42 am
@ashampoopaloo-755: Actually the solstice is the middle of summer/winter, and the spring/autumn equinox the middle of the transtion from winter/summer, but don’t let facts get in your way.
22 Dec 2011, 07:57 am
This particular article is demanding and fairly difficult for thorough comprehension by the LOUTS in rugby. The real nuances and “niceties” is surely lost on most of them and the hidden irony and “HUMOUR” and such like are beyond them too.
Suarez VERDICT a STAND against RACISM
{{ Negro or ‘negrito’, it doesn’t really matter now. Sometimes it’s not what you say so much as how you say it, and how many times you do so and the effect it is plainly having in the hair-trigger atmosphere of a match between such ferocious rivals as Liverpool and Manchester United.
That certainly was the conclusion of the independent regulatory panel of three which on Tuesday night accepted the allegations of Patrice Evra and banned Luis Suarez for eight matches.
As they did so they swept aside the sophistry of the brilliant Uruguayan’s defence that he had done nothing worse than slip into a cultural divide, that what he said to an enraged opponent two months ago wouldn’t have raised the eyebrow of a black compatriot back home in Montevideo.
It is the kind of argument which can hold up a court for some time – as it did in this minefield of a case which represented such a huge challenge to the nerve and the working morality of the rulers of the game – but had it been accepted the chances of success in similar prosecutions in the future would have slumped to around zero.
There would have been a precedent for the niceties of one man’s understanding of what might constitute a serious offence against the pride and the dignity of another.
Instead, the judgement was that if Suarez had offended in a way that may have been more subtle than when he bit an opponent in the Dutch league – and earned the nickname of the Cannibal of Ajax – he had still crossed an unacceptable line.
The implications are heavy for anybody who, had the outcome been different on Tuesday night, might have been tempted to join in any regression to the days when racism was such a harsh reality in English football.
Certainly it creates a new level of tension for John Terry, the Chelsea and England captain who awaits the deliberations of the criminal prosecution service as they the weigh the evidence in the charge of Anton Ferdinand that he too was a victim of racial abuse.
The adjudicating panel was led by Advocate Paul Goulding but it is hard not to believe that he received powerful underpinning from his colleague Denis Smith.
A magnificent centre half for Stoke City, and a manager who knew both success and failure, Smith went into the hearing under the bizarre suggestion that an old professional connection with Sir Alex Ferguson’s son Darren might make him a less than impartial arbiter.
For anybody who knew him at all, the theory might have been etched crudely in crayon rather than twittered.
Indeed Smith’s long, injury strewn but superbly indefatigable involvement in the hard end of professional football made him eminently qualified to note the difference between nuances of language, and intention, and the realities of serious provocation and insult.
Even so the long days of deliberation suggest a near forensic examination of the claims and the counter claims. Surely, it had to be so.
That Evra once had a similar charge to the one he made against Saurez rejected, and had evidence at another hearing categorised as ‘unreliable’ no doubt emboldened Liverpool’s defence of their outstanding player.
It is also true that Tuesday night’s verdict could easily have been shrouded in inconclusive platitudes and irresolute action.
Instead, the men charged with arguably one of the trickiest decisions in the history of football discipline were unequivocal in their conclusion.
Liverpool, predictably, are indignant and later issued a powerful statement of rebuttal.
From the tone of it, it would be surprising if they do not take advantage of the two-week suspension of Suarez’s sentence which allows for an appeal.
Liverpool said the decision was extraordinary in that the issue had come down to the word of Evra against Saurez and that their player had no record of racism, pointing out his mixed-race heritage.
They also cited Evra’s comment that he did not regard Saurez as a racist.
Saurez was, the panel decided, guilty of misconduct and insulting behaviour and the use of racist language.
You could say that in another context Saurez would have been guilty of nothing more than cultural clumsiness.
The decision was, however, much more emphatic. It said that Saurez had succeeded in inflaming his opponent in a calculated and unacceptable way.
The gut instinct here is that a difficult but vital stand has been made. And, you may ask, against what precisely?
Hopefully, it is the idea that racism, however it manifests itself, is in English football indeed consigned to the past.
Suarez himself admitted it had been a tough day, writing on Twitter: “Today is a very difficult and painful day for both me and my family. Thanks for all the support, I’ll keep working.”
The commission’s ruling, which emerged just after 8pm, stated: “An Independent Regulatory Commission has today found a charge of misconduct against Luis Suarez proven, and have issued a suspension for a period of eight matches as well as fining him £40 000 (R520 000), pending appeal.
“Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1). The insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra’s colour.” – }}
a) How much of this ” Sometimes it’s not what you say so much as how you say it, and how many times you do so and the effect it is plainly having … ” is blissfully overlooked and denied and trampled upon as they merrily engage in stereotyping, sectarianism, ethnicity tinged slurs and blatant racism.
b) note the lack of Caucasian features of the victims relative to the perpetrators for it tends to delineate the flow of all these social, sick -isms , such as RACISM.
c)” the judgement was that if Suarez had offended in a way that may have been more subtle ………….. he had still crossed an unacceptable line.” How many here have the wisdom of this Advocate and his two assessors? How many times thus are the lines crossed here daily many, many times?
d) ” The implications are heavy for anybody who, …………. , might have been tempted to join in any regression to the days when racism was such a harsh reality in English football ” . Note NO going backwards will ever be tolerated, so you are wasting your time and energy.
e) ” …, pointing out his mixed-race heritage.” Note too (esp.David) the greater world out there accepts the offensiveness of British-origin racial tags and do not use them officially.
f) ” The gut instinct here is that a difficult but vital stand has been made. And, you may ask, against what precisely?
Hopefully, it is the idea that racism, however it manifests itself, is in English football indeed consigned to the past.” Clearlly only progression is acceptable and regression is confined to the trash bins of the world.
So for Patrice Evra and ‘ipso facto’ NON-RACISM, the third time is the CHARM as he has twice before lodged similar complaints. His DIGNITY is clearly of supreme importance to him.

As I have always maintained here, racism is alive annd well and especially among those who hail from the lands where the ugly social evil got its birth.
Chelsea’s Terry facing RACIST CHARGES
{{ Chelsea and England football captain John Terry will face criminal charges for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.
Terry has been ordered to appear in a magistrates court on February 1 over the incident in a Premier League match in October.
Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London, said: “I have today advised the Metropolitan Police Service that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments allegedly made during a Premier League football match between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea on 23 October 2011.”
She added: “After careful consideration of all the evidence, I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case.
“Mr Terry will appear before West London Magistrates Court on 1 February 2012.
“He is now summonsed with a criminal offence and has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that nothing should be reported which could prejudice his trial.”
After the allegation was made, Terry issued a statement saying he was “disappointed that people have leapt to the wrong conclusions about the context of what I was seen to be saying to Anton Ferdinand.
“I would never say such a thing, and I’m saddened that people would think so,” he added.
Chelsea have been steadfast in support of Terry and ahead of the CPS decision, manager Andre Villas-Boas said: “The only thing I know is that I will be fully supportive of John Terry, whatever the outcome.
“He has my full support, he has the club’s full support.
“We know exactly his human values and personality. They are never in doubt.”
The decision to press charges came a day before Chelsea, fourth in the table, travel to third-placed Tottenham for a highly anticipated London derby in which Terry is expected to play.
The CPS decision regarding Terry came a day after England’s Football Association handed Liverpool striker Luis Suarez an eight-game ban for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra during a league match in October. }}

Terry denies RACISM CLAIM.
{{ London – Chelsea and England captain John Terry will be prosecuted for the alleged racial abuse of Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in a Premier League match in October, British authorities said on Wednesday.
The decision comes a day after Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches on Tuesday and fined 40 000 pounds by the FA for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during another game earlier this season.
Terry will appear in court on February 1 and could be fined up to 2 500 pounds if found guilty. That is a fraction of his weekly wage but the damage to his image could be more costly.
Police had been investigating a complaint that Terry racially abused Ferdinand during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat by their west London rivals in October.
The complaint came after video footage of the incident was posted on the Internet.
“I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case,” Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London said in a statement.
“Mr Terry will appear before West London Magistrates’ Court on 1 February 2012.”
Terry has repeatedly denied making a racist comment to Ferdinand, younger brother of the England captain’s long-time international team mate Rio.
“I am disappointed with the decision to charge me and hope to be given the chance to clear my name as quickly as possible,” Terry said in a statement reported by British media.
“I have never aimed a racist remark at anyone and count people from all races and creeds among my closest friends.
“I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence.”
“I have campaigned against racism and believe there is no place for it in society,” he added.
Chelsea, who play at Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, stood by their captain, a hero with the club’s fans for his loyalty and commitment, and he remains available for selection.
“John has made it clear he denies the charge and is determined to do all he can to prove his innocence,” the club said in a statement on their website.
“Chelsea FC has always been fully supportive of John in this matter and will continue to be so. The club finds all forms of discrimination abhorrent and we are proud of the work we undertake campaigning on this important issue.” – Reuters }}
And with all that for the many LOUTS to digest the rest of this day beckons and the nearby beach is extremely appealing for one who should be experiencing the cold northern hemisphere winter right now with its blizzards/white-outs, snow and/or rain.

Apologies in advance for the long post…
But things are slow on keo… so… read… don’t… no skin off my nose either way…
Sheesh…
Feel the hatred…!
Why do posters use examples of other people’s behavior and comments to generalize and judge other people by the actions of these other people…?
We can all find examples of disgusting behavior and abhorrent actions and beliefs committed by people of every colour, creed, religion, nationality, income bracket and whatever other criteria by which people choose to group themselves and others…
It is a futile exercise to try and beat people down with such cherry-picking and doesn’t make the person regurgitating the heinous actions one iota superior to the people he’s trying to brow-beat… quite the opposite in fact… because it raises the issues of why such a person feels they have a need or right to constantly judge other people through the anonymity of a faceless blog…
Judge people for what and who they are… and what they do and say… as individuals and take issue with them one-on-one… as individual people… not as a representative of any group of people… No poster here represents anyone other than themselves on this blog… So don’t speak for anyone but yourself and don’t brow-beat anyone else in the belief you are righting any historic, cultural, racial or national wrongs and crimes… deserved or not, true or not, right or wrong… because you’re not…
Rather than proving anyone else to be inferior or a criminal or a thug… in most cases you’re only showing yourselves to be arrogant haters…
What I find really interesting is that most… if not all… of the haters are people who do not live in South Africa… most are people who once did live here but have chosen to live elsewhere and are obviously neither comfortable with their decision or in their new homelands… They are obviously not accepted in their new countries and never will be… they’ll always be uitlanders… belonging nowhere… being accepted nowhere… and not being relevant or respected in their new homelands…
They still see South Africa as it was when they left… they are stuck in a timewarp…
While we in South Africa have moved along, not always forwards, but together for better or worse… WE are affected by and have to live with the current happenings here… So why are the loudest shouters those who chose to emigrate…?
It seems they have to justify their choice to everyone and mostly themselves because deep down they know they’ll never truly be accepted where they are now.
It seems they come onto keo and post offensive comments to force people to take notice of them and to give their lives some sort of relevance… even if only in a virtual space… because they are not noticed or taken seriously where they live. They certainly seem to spend more time on Keo than the average resident South African.
My advice to all my South African brothers and sisters is… simply ignore these haters… Haters will hate… if they can’t find anything to hate they will manufacture something to hate…
We know who and what we are… we know we’re far from perfect and have our problems… but we are also far from the evil mindless imbeciles that some of the ex-pat saffas, kiwi and aussie posters try to make out we are… We don’t have to be defensive at all… We live the reality in South Africa… and we’re more comfortable… and IMO we’re a lot more honest… with each other… than most other people are in most other countries…
Let them post what they will… and let’s all just ignore them… don’t respond to their comments bad or good… because often the good comments are just to draw someone into a hate-filled fight…
Of course these same people will all flame me and my comments and they’re welcome to… but I will take my own advice and simply ignore them…
Enjoy the holiday season in whatever way you do… Use the time to share with loved ones and friends and make meaningful memories… forget bucks in the bank… the true wealth of every person is measured by the number of wonderful, loving memories created and shared with the special people in their lives…
Again… apologies for the long post… hopefully gunther with forgive me…
See y’all next year…
Go Stormers…!!!
I’ve gotta feeling that next year’s gonna be a good year
?That next year’s gonna be a good year
?That next year’s gonna be a good good year!!

@Upho-770: YO. good read and great to hear some positivity.
Just want to say: some of us who are living abroad have not ‘emigrated’ as such but find our(my)selves still here by circumstance and lack of strategy.
My wife and I support a family of 4, and have a big old debt in £, which I cannot just diss.
Ontop of this, my chosen trade has nothing to do with my higher education, so getting work in SA will be an issue competing as an uneducated mid 30′s white guy. To be honest, until Co-location Data Centres become big there, there won’t really be much opportunity, regardless!
I would return to SA yesterday if the opportunity arose. My wife on the other hand? she’s a bit spooked by words like ‘Rape’, Murder’, etc. especially having daughters. she’s a South African btw. But we’ll see…
That being said, I’m not unhappy here on the old Mud Island living in the Big Smoke. I love this city. I enjoy my job. My kids are in a good school. I’ve had 3 free and succesful major surgeries. I have a large circle of friends. The cherry on the top, is that if you, like me, live and breath rock and mthrfkn roll, you will not find a better place on this blue rock to go and see bands!
