Cash-strapped Lions tighten belts

The Golden Lions Rugby Union insists it will be able to pay its players despite having ‘financial difficulties’.

GLRU deputy president Altmann Allers told the Sunday Times that the union is in ‘the process of huge restructuring’ and that ‘people have been retrenched’, but dismissed reports that player salaries would not be paid this month.

‘I wonder if the rumours will go away when the players get paid this week?’ Allers countered. ‘It is true that we are going through some financial difficulties but the players’ salaries will not be affected. I don’t know if it is a misunderstanding or if someone misinterpreted the situation, but we are going to meet our obligations in 2012 and beyond. We are in financial difficulty but that is exactly why we are cutting back.

‘There are a number of players whose contracts we didn’t renew,’ he added, careful not to go into specifics. ‘We are in negotiations to terminate [the contracts of] 13 others.’

Allers estimates the union will have 40 to 45 senior contracted players in 2012, 30 fewer than last season.

they are snakes those cousins, no two ways about it.
would not put anything past them.

i have said it before… sa rugby needs hardmen of yore…

a revamped louis luyt type to lead us, and teach those naughty antipodes some good lessons, who is hard for the right reasons but not verkrampt and fixated on the old racial issues.

The Toyota Cheetahs will have the honour of opening the newly built stadium for top New Zealand franchise, the Canterbury Crusaders.

The Seven-time Super Rugby champions will move to their replacement stadium – Rugby League Park – after a season in the travelling wilderness following the devastating earthquake in Christchurch earlier this year that deprived them of their regular ground – the old Lancaster Park (these days Jade Stadium).

But with the news that a new ground will be built for the 2012 Vodacom Super Rugby season, the Crusaders announced today that they will officially open the stadium against the Cheetahs in their second home game on March 24.

Hamish Riach, CEO of the Crusaders, said that contractors were working incredibly hard and were making good progress on converting the grounds to a first class sports and outdoor entertainment centre.

“This has been an ambitious programme from the start and we are delighted that we are getting closer to having home games in Christchurch.”

Riach said that the Crusaders were thankful of the great support they had received from Central Government and the City Council in helping turn Rugby League Park into a first class rugby ground, complete with state-of-the-art structures, new floodlights and new turf.

No venue has been decided for the Crusaders opening home game on 9 March against the Chiefs, with a decision to be made early next year.

The Crusaders spent the entire 2011 Super Rugby season playing away from home, and did exceptionally well, making the final where they lost against the Reds.

    Some news:

Cardiff – Welsh forward Luke Charteris will leave the Dragons at the end of the season, and has said that he will no longer ply his trade at clubs within Wales’ borders.

According to the allblacks.com website, the lock is seen by many to be Wales best lineout forward, and his loss to Rodney Parade will be a big blow, especially considering that coach Warren Gatland has said in the past that those outside of the principality will unlikely be considered for selection.

To combat this, Charteris agent Christian Abt told the Wales Online that he is trying to insert a clause that will allow his client’s release for international rugby.

Apt admitted that inserting a Wales Test call up clause into a contract outside of the country was difficult, but said he had interest from a French, Japanese and Super Rugby club.

“We are also speaking to a couple of other franchises. We have had interest from one Super Rugby franchise and also from a Japanese organisation

@stormersboy-359: Imagine it’s the Stormers. With Charteris standing alongside Bekker you’d be forgiven for thinking the Twin Towers have been resurrected. Fckn long piece of timber, that Taff. And bloody good. Made an excellent partnership with Alun Wyn Jones.

Crusaders travelled to the moon and back this year and were only narrowly beaten at the last hurdle, they will win the S15 next year.

A bigger maybe than any other team though, what they did this year was incredible, beating the Stormers with 10 front line players injured and away from home was very impressive ( and not one complaint about travelling maybe there’s a lesson to be learn’t there for some other teams)

lets just say they should be the bookies favourite as usual but this is not a guarantee of success. 1 title in 5 years could easily become 1 title in 6 years.
thorn, reechee and carter are still central to the teams success, no?

just read that the maties will provide substitutes for sarries second team next month.in light of this, is it possible according to sanzar rules for the lions to count on their fellow s14 teams to do the same for them seeing that they are on a mission to get rid of their players?
