Leading SA’s rugby revolution
26 Dec 2011
What do Francois Hougaard, Bismarck du Plessis, Gio Aplon, Johann Sadie, Andries Bekker, Pat Lambie and Juan de Jongh all have in common?
They all have the X factor, something that sets them apart from the rest.
If the Springboks are to achieve consistent success against the world champion All Blacks over the next four years, they will have to change their conservative mindset and play an expansive game when the situation demands it.
These seven players can lead South Africa’s rugby revolution and take our game to the next level.

I know a man
He came from Capetown
He wore his passion for his Team
Like a thorny crown
He said cane
I live in fear
My love for these loser’s is so overpowering
I’m afraid that I will disappear
Slip slidin’ away
Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away

sharks to learn crucial lesson of life, namely: it is hard… on the 24 feb, loftus, 7pm
5 Jan 2012, 12:12 pm
@rangerman-702:
It could be that they pulled out because they don’t want to play in that shithol_e called Newlands.
Lions don’t mind cause they are used to playing in a shithol_e

@Mr Black-696:
sharks can’t fill the tank for a semi final… so don’t think a play-play warm-up match is going to attract too many shark fans…
and they certainly would’ve got some of the tv money… so does seem a strange decision to me…
but no skin off our nose… at least the cheetahs will come and play rugby and not try to disable as many stormers as possible before the season…
but i do believe warm ups need to be hard and tough… to get into gear and hit the super 15 at full speed…
the stormers bye in the first week last year hurt us and we were behind the pace initially at the beginning of the season…
isn’t it the sharks turn for the first week bye…?
it’s a lot of crock this bye business… why is it not rotated around the three countries who can rotate it around their franchises to ensure that each team will only have the first week bye once every 15 years…?
anyway…
good luck to all the sa franchises… hope the lions can produce in the s15, that the bulls get back to their best soon, that the sharks produce the goods, that the cheetahs bliksem all the foreigners in bloem and away… and that… the stormers… finally… put a descent year together… the mayans will have us believe this is last chance coral for the stormers…

@cane-706: I was watching a program the other night about a man in Wellington NZ, who supports the Canes and worked at the Wellington zoo … one day he decided to feed the Lions
and was mauled, bitten and licked by two beautiful Lions …. dramatic footage I tell you.
The feeding victim survived only because he tasted weird.

Fair enough lets get some good honest debate going about the current state of SA rugby , why no trophies at any level and a ranking of 4th, unless you want to keep cutting and pasting articles about NZ?

@Roar my Lions …. Currie Cup Champions 2011-704:
funny that because just the other day hg gave me a detailed, well worded breakdown of how ffucking financially successfull the sharks union is, par none.
and this was excluding any commercial sponsorship / marketing tie-ins.
i was quite impressed as, by his calculations, it seemed like they were/are the richest union around by some distance.

@NZINCHINA-712:
in a nutshell,
our problems start firstly with the south african rugby union and then follows very closely with the (almost always, usually inept) coach / coaches appointed by them / it. this is principally, and probably, the sole causes imo.
there is nothing wrong with the actual players, playing structures, different competitions, various super franchises (for the most part) as we have certainly been very, very competitive in the comp in the past five years, and just about any and every other aspect in any way related to rugby and how its conducted.
the ja-broers… english and afrikaans, black and white, political and transformational, greedy and self interested… are killing us…

It seems, that across the board it is time for some pragmatism in SA Rugby.
The Soccer WC has gifted SA Sporting Codes with top notch, state of the art-Venues.
Difficult decisions lie ahead for Unions that own “Dinosaurs” that they cannot afford to upgrade or maintain.

Bakkies perfected the flying headbutt from that pioneer of filthy play Corne Krige, now he was absolute filth
5 Jan 2012, 13:05 pm
@cane-730:
its actually the opposite at the moment.
the dinosaurs are paid for and making money while all the new stadiums (for the most part) are running at rather astronomical losses (for the most part).
of course the solution is to marry the top notch, state of the art (upgrades included) to the paid for and making money parts of the equation.

Quote from PdV.
“I don’t like to prepare the guys to cheat and it seems to me (it is) the only way going forward”
Any other International Coach would have lost his Job within 72 hours of this outrageous statement………………………………………………………………..but not in the land of Bakkies.
5 Jan 2012, 13:30 pm
@cane-740: Hey Porksword, nothing like Dean Richards at Quins (Banned for actually cheating), Warren Gatland (“Cheating” Statements At the World Cup – not fired) and Johnny Wilko’s Coaches (Blatant Ball “cheating”/switching incident at WC – also not fired)….
Come now, you dishonest little duplicitous sheepshagger… Tell the truth for a change, eh and then we’ll all get along fine….

bob dwyer on the all blacks:
On the negative aspects of All Black play, which has resulted in much criticism – and, as I have said, from many parts of the world. Just as the All Blacks value the necessity of quick ball for their own attack, they clearly recognise the threat that opposition quick ball poses to their defence. In fact, I thought that the All Black defence was unusually vulnerable to attack from quick ball, as evidenced by two quite simple Springbok tries in their second test in Wellington and a few similar efforts by the Wallabies. They strive therefore to limit such recycles from their opponents. Nothing wrong with that – all teams have a similar agenda – so long as they do so within the laws of the game.
It is here that I, and many others, question their tactics. Black jerseyed tacklers finish on the ground, on the wrong side of the ball, so often, that I can’t believe that it’s by accident. This prevents their opponents from arriving quickly to support their team-mate and allowing other All Black support players to attack opposition ball on the ground. Further, opposition scrum-halves are having difficulty getting in close to clear the ball and are forced to “lift” the ball for their pass to clear Black bodies. This slows down the clearing pass and gives valuable time to the defence. And, it’s illegal!
On New Zealand ball at the tackle. Whilst they, generally, arrive “through the gate” on opposition ball, they enter from outrageously off-side positions on their own ball – sometimes they are clearing out opponents from positions a metre or two BEYOND the ruck/maul. This has the beneficial effect of limiting opposition hands to the tackle ball and allowing their “early, long place” ball for instant recycle to their excellent support players. If any one doubts this, they should Google “All Blacks at the Breakdown” and view an excellently compiled video from the Wellington test v the Springboks. It is even on the increase. All players play their part, and while McCaw, Franks and Smith have been serial offenders, Kieran Read has recently perfected his technique also. It is dramatically effective and frequently brings tries – and it’s illegal!
