Olivier’s injury comeback curtailed
11 Jan 2012
Wynand Olivier’s quest to be fit for the start of the Bulls’ Super Rugby campaign has suffered another setback.
The midfielder, who is recovering from a shoulder operation, broke a small bone in his wrist at the weekend. The injury requires three weeks to heal, which means Olivier will only be able to resume full training three weeks before the start of the tournament.
However, Bulls team doctor Org Strauss said they expected Olivier to be in contention for selection for their opener against the Sharks on 24 February.
Meanwhile, the Bulls will attend a three day training camp at Royal Marang Sports Palace near Rustenburg from Wednesday.
‘We just need a little bit of a change of scenery,’ Bulls coach Frans Ludeke explained. ‘The guys have been working very hard at Loftus, so we will break away and continue the hard work somewhere else for the next couple of days. I am very pleased with our progress thus far.’

bulls to struggle this year
11 Jan 2012, 08:38 am
More of a blessing than a loss
11 Jan 2012, 08:40 am
As seen on Twitter:
“Olivier injured his hand in a freak perm accident”
11 Jan 2012, 08:49 am
I expect Wynand to be eased back into action very carefully this season. I think this hand injury will clear up sooner than his recovery from the operation.
It will probably be some time before he can run at full tilt again.

Keo trying to ingratiate himself with Ewen Mckenzie again, I see.

@grant10-1:
The Bulls have been dreadful 80% of the time in super rugby, they are just reverting back to the norm. Mid table finish.
11 Jan 2012, 09:12 am
@Tacitus-5: he reminds me of that small geeky kid in school who buys the jocks lunch so he can have the honour of carrying their bags and being seen with them. if mckenzie followed this site closely he’d have known that less than 2 years ago KEO had nothing good to say about the ‘rubble reds’ and called their adventurous revolution “touch rugby” on a regular basis.

@NZINCHINA-6: I truly cannot see a SA team winning super 15 this season….all outfits have glaring weaknesses in my opinion.
as for my Stormers…the less said the better
11 Jan 2012, 09:24 am
@grant10-8:
The winning side will probably come from the Crusaders, Blues or Reds. My Blues have bought well in the off season so im hoping they make the final, have the Stormers beefed up their scrum that was a little embarassing at times last year?
11 Jan 2012, 09:28 am
@PissAnt-3:
I’ve heard reports that he smashed his hand on the wall by mistake while performing a dance routine to Cindy Lauper’s “Girls just wanna have fun” while singing into his GHD.
11 Jan 2012, 09:40 am
@NZINCHINA-9: i hate to break it to u but Piri and Nonu become something else when they put on that black jumper but in the super seasons…well, they play like they’re playing for a salary and not much else. Thats the problem with the kiwi franchises. too much player movement means desire for the franchise jersey isn’t strong enough. i mean, its like a bloody merry go round, SBW at chiefs now, nonu and weep in blue, cruden moved. the only stability seems to be at the crusaders, and surprise surprise, who’s the strongest most dominant NZ franchise?
11 Jan 2012, 09:45 am
@flanka-11:
you have a very short memory my friend go back a few years and check out the Canes results, finalists and always into the semi’s a few years back with Nonu and Piri there, the big move last year was a coaching issue with Hammet, the Blues will finish higher up the table than any SA franchise this year.
11 Jan 2012, 09:46 am
@NZINCHINA-9: stormers scrum not beefed up….have lost CJ VD Linde but gained deon Carstens….who is a better loosehead than 3 imo….hoping young Frans Malherbe and kitshoff come into there own….but Brock and Blaauw will probably be the favored 1 and 3…
11 Jan 2012, 09:52 am
What kind of name is Org?
11 Jan 2012, 09:56 am
@>^..^< katman-14:
I think it’s the afrikaans version of George.
11 Jan 2012, 09:59 am
Well I guess we will now see what Allistair Coetzee can do without Rassie at his side.
It’s make or break for him.
11 Jan 2012, 10:03 am
@NZINCHINA-12: i don’t doubt canes can make the playoffs…but thats what they are, perennial bridesmaids. not realistic title winning contenders. and thats what they’ve ALWAYS been. Similar with the blues. And to show u im not bias i can tell u i think the same of the sharks (whom i support) and stormers. perennial bridesmaids but lacking the killer edge to win the comp. and i’ll be the first to say when the canes issues started in the boardroom last year anmd nonu was being called a ‘troublemaker’ i said on this very site that the source of trouble was the coach, not the boys. Hammy was trying to make nonu a scapegoat for the season being so poor and he wasn’t having any of it…and the proof was in the pudding due to the massive exodus of players.
11 Jan 2012, 10:03 am
@David-15: It sounds pig-like.
11 Jan 2012, 10:05 am
this year will be similar to last except waratahs will be more powerful and bulls weaker, with stormers simply making up the numbers in the finals. sharks need a solid midfield and half of that HAS to be Fransie…non-negotiable. offer him whatever he asks.
11 Jan 2012, 10:12 am
@Tacitus-16:
This will be Allister’s last season at WP.
11 Jan 2012, 10:14 am
@PissAnt-20:
any ideas whispers as to who we can look forward to next year…?
dobson… roux…?
11 Jan 2012, 10:16 am
@ufo-21:
Much too early to tell. Someone gullible enough to believe he can work with the admin there I guess…
11 Jan 2012, 10:18 am
@PissAnt-22:
how the hell do we shake the wp tree and get all the rotten apples to fall out…?? serious question…
11 Jan 2012, 10:20 am
stormers Wp need a top class coach set up…..I never really bought into the AC/ Rassie set up…..yes we defended very well bit somehow I always had the impression that we were not truly up there with the Reds [ last year ] or Crusaders at times….
Last years losses at home to Bulls, Reds and Saders underlined my perceptions….
We need a Mitchell type….someone who knows that defence is important but also that a more attacking brand of rugby is essential to take the extra step up and actually win titles.
I respect what AC/ Rassie hace accomplished….but feel they , as a pair, reached there ceiling…
11 Jan 2012, 10:24 am
@ufo-23:
The simple answer – there is no way.
To change how administrators are elected (appointed) in rugby you need the constitution to be changed – and the only people that can change the constitution are the clubs themselves (who think they are/own WP).
11 Jan 2012, 10:28 am
I want to see Venter and Sadie in the Bulls midfield, they will make a killer combo.
@flanka-19: I think your boy Fransie will wear the orange and white outfit on his return in June.
11 Jan 2012, 10:30 am
@PissAnt-25:
Can you give me a rough breakdown of the number of clubs in traditional and previously disadvantages areas respectively.
In other words, who holds the balance of power when it comes to voting time.
The Stellenbosch guys who actually know their rugby. Or the guys who are driven by political/ideaological agendas?
11 Jan 2012, 10:30 am
@PissAnt-25:
Pissant, just heard that AC is leaving WP/Stormers aswell. Is this just speculation?
11 Jan 2012, 10:32 am
@Jeraldjay-28: if that is true it seems that AC and Rassie may be new bok coaches?
11 Jan 2012, 10:33 am
@flanka-17: Agreed , Canes are always the bridesmaids………. Although i know my Saders will thrash all comers this season and now with a new ground wont be shagged out at final time , a team to watch this season will be the Highlanders … Jamie Joseph has installed great belief in this team and i expect a top 4 finish this season. Also interested to see how the England int holds his own in the S15
11 Jan 2012, 10:33 am
@JA-JA-26: killer combo with ball-in-hand but may be suspect in defence.
11 Jan 2012, 10:35 am
@JA-JA-26: 10 – morne, 12 – venter, 13 – sadie = none of these guys are proven solid defenders at Super rugby level!
11 Jan 2012, 10:35 am
@PissAnt-3:
11 Jan 2012, 10:37 am
SA rugby seems to be making the ultimate mistake – good players dont always make good coaches – look at all provincial teams in SA seems a common trend
11 Jan 2012, 10:40 am
@PissAnt-25:
yeah… i had a conversation once about four years ago with one of the wp brass… you are spot on the money about “they think they are/own wp rugby”…
i was left speechless… and the only thing more disturbing is that he didn’t even realize what he was saying… so entrenched is the sense of entitlement and ownership…
sheesh…
guess we’re doomed to perpetually supporting an underperforming team…
but…
this year we could really win the s15…! no really…!!
11 Jan 2012, 10:44 am
@Tacitus-27:
I think the number is around 92 clubs that form part of WP rugby. I will be speaking out of place here as I am not 100% sure if anything changed but all club votes counts for exactly the same – so no one club (or strong clubs) votes counts more as the next one.
WP Club rugby has 8 different division (from Super A league to Division 4) of about 10 clubs in each league – this excludes the Paarl and Rural leagues.
You can find a list of the clubs and leagues here: http://www.wpclubrugby.co.za/Fixtures/Download-Fixtures.aspx
@Jeraldjay-28:
I have not heard that he is quitting now – only that he will not renew his contract in October this year. As is the case with Proudfoot too apparently.
11 Jan 2012, 10:46 am
@ufo-35:
Yes amazing really…
WP’s biggest strength (the amount of clubs and thus talent they produce) is also their greatest weakness thanks to gutless administration.
11 Jan 2012, 10:47 am
Only 3 weeks in full training…only?
And that only starts in 3 weeks’ time?
Someone needs to address the length of pre-season for the Super 15. These guys started training in December, for a tournament that starts in late February. We all know there are too many games in a calender year, but the franchises can’t do a helluva lot about that.
But surely they can shorten (and intensify) the pre-season in a bid to have these guys fresher?
11 Jan 2012, 10:48 am
@PissAnt-36:
And would I be correct in saying that the number of clubs in say Pretoria is considerably smaller, and therefore a larger measure of central control can be exercised over them – hence the ability of the union to function more effectively?
11 Jan 2012, 10:51 am
@PissAnt-36:
You mentioned earlier that clubs and their members make all the administrative decision within WP Rugby but player contracts and decsions regarding the proffessional structures are made by WP Pty Ltd.
Surely the Pty top brass (will not mention any names) are accountable to the WP Executive board.
11 Jan 2012, 10:54 am
@Tacitus-39:
Substantially.
As far as I know there are 6 clubs in the top league (Carlton League) and about 20 in the Blue Bulls lower or reserve league which gives you a total of 26 or so.
Lions are even less than that I believe and you can imagine the boys from Bloem and Natal don’t even come close.
11 Jan 2012, 10:56 am
@Tacitus-16: AC is like Ludeke – useless without his handler. Remember 2008 when Heineke was not there to hold Fransies hand.
11 Jan 2012, 10:57 am
@Jeraldjay-40:
Clubs nominate and vote individuals into the WPRFU board. Just how much control PTY has over the board or the other way around, I don’t know.
What I can tell you and just reading the media in general, most decisions are made by guys voted on.
11 Jan 2012, 10:57 am
@Transformation-31: Well it’s a chance I think they should take.
11 Jan 2012, 10:58 am
@PissAnt-41:
Sorry I was rightfully corrected – I think the Lions have about 30 senior clubs.
11 Jan 2012, 11:01 am
@PissAnt-36: Tacistus is interested in who is black and who is white…get with the program.
11 Jan 2012, 11:02 am
@RL-42:
11 Jan 2012, 11:03 am
@RL-42:
I think Ludeke is a lot better than you Lions guys with your bitter grudges are willing or able to give him credit for.
11 Jan 2012, 11:04 am
@Transformation-46:

lmao
11 Jan 2012, 11:04 am
@Tacitus-48: Ludek is kak man
