Sarries down Biarritz for vital win

Saracens are favourites to advance to the European Cup quarter-finals after their 20-16 win over Biarritz in Watford.

While fullback Alex Goode was named Man of the Match, it was outside centre Owen Farrell who starred with boot for Saracens as he kicked five penalties to clinch the four-point win.

The English Premiership defending champions, who spent their week training in Cape Town, led 14-6 at the break before scrumhalf Dimitri Yachvili (who scored all Biarritz’s match points) spearheaded his team’s second-half fight. The French international’s third penalty created a one-point game at the death, but Farrell nailed a 77th minute three-pointer which helped his team to their fourth win of the tournament.

Saracens now top Pool 5 by five log points and will travel to Treviso for their final group game.

In Sunday’s other fixture, Leinster recorded a 23-16 away win over Glasgow in Pool 3 to secure their spot in the next round.

    Saracens could not buy a win in the HC last year before a certain aura came into the mix… this year they top their table and will actually go through to the play-offs!

    saracens could not buy a win in HC last year when brendan venter was the coach, they ditched him & miraculously their fortunes seem to have changed.

    @Transformation-5:

    Brendan Venter was great in taking them to a AP premiership… but they wanted to go one further and appointed John Smit as a coach that would take them further… fantastic decision clearly!

    @bryce_in_oz-6: smit, who has no domestic competition winner’s medal of any kind :roll: – both seasons when the sharks worn the currie cup he was ubiquitous by his absence. the lard that blocks the works, so to speak.

    @Transformation-10: he has a wc and two 3n (out of the 3 we have won) so he probably isnt too concerned at snipers who played basketball for 163rd ranked south africa :lol:

    @rangerman-11: :lol: nice try

    8-match tournaments are a totally different kettle of fish compared to league-based ones, smit failed in all his seasons in the currie cup & super rugby. tri-nations & rwc, he was playing with the BEST talent in the country, at the sharks his ineptitude showed, where he couldn’t rely on other franchise cappies like vic, juan etc to bail him out.

    Once freed from the quota shacles of the Beast and Steenkamp (at test level) JS demonstraes what he can do with decent props.

    @Biscuit-21: Apart from the terrible high tackle near the end (he was lucky to not get carded), he was very solid.

    @>^..^< katman-26:

    I missed that tackle . Got distracted.

    Your comments are about the game so great. If it was a bad high tackle then he was lucky. But solids you say.

    What winds me up is thay any thread somehow degenerates into a smit bash.
    Last week smit was in SA and got asked questions about the sharks.
