Daniel to skipper Sharks

The Sharks have named Keegan Daniel as their captain for the 2012 Super Rugby campaign.
It was always known that 2011 Currie Cup skipper Daniel and Bismarck du Plessis were the front runners for the Sharks captaincy following the exits of John Smit (Saracens) and Stefan Terblanche (Ulster). And head coach John Plumtree announced on Monday his decision to stick with 26-year-old Daniel for the new Super Rugby campaign.
‘I was really impressed with Keegan during the Currie Cup last year, the way he grew as a leader in what was a difficult campaign,’ said Plumtree. ‘It was a campaign where we had to deal with a number of interruptions, through injury and the Springboks coming back. So it was difficult to manage and I thought he did really well.’
Plumtree added that most of the Sharks players backed Daniel as their captain.
‘He has the respect of all the players in the team which is obviously very important and also for the way he plays. And his friendliness and the person he is off the field make him a popular leader. I’m giving him this opportunity to keep the growth going and we’ll see how it goes,’ continued Plumtree.
‘I think the biggest thing – and I can’t emphasise it more – is that he has the support of all his team-mates. Ultimately, he was their choice as their leader. You can’t get a better endorsement than that from your peers.’
Du Plessis, who is set to become the first-choice Springbok hooker this season, will still play a leadership role as vice-captain. The 27-year-old will takeover as skipper should Daniel be unavailable for selection.
‘Keegan can’t play every game, so Bismarck du Plessis will be vice-captain. Again, it’s the same thing – a guy that leads by example. He’s also very astute in terms of tactics so I am keen to have his leadership and to give him the responsibility to grow within the group as well,’ said Plumtree. ‘Both of these players are ultimate competitors, they are real Sharks men with a real love for this jersey and it means a lot to them.
‘The majority of your leadership comes through actions and often words come second. Both these boys are right up there in that department.’

Looks like Jean Deysel is set to play at no.4 then with Daniel the capt and going to be in the team and Alberts and Kankowski at 7 & 8 respectively

@Rhys7-1: would be crazy to play Deysel at 4, way too short to even win his own lineout ball and heavy as hell to lift … big mistake playing the nothing Daniel as a starting player. He is a good splinter player to have though.

@Transformation-6: @John Galt-5: Yip Thorn a bit taller but a go to man in the lineout. Guppies should consider turning Kankowski into a 4 lock, get him to put on 5kg’s of muscle then maybe he can emulate Thorn, but it won’t happen, he has no mongrel in him.

Sharks are fine upfront,more than enough quality

Paul Jordaan has been released from the SA Under 20 training squad, hopefully so that he can concentrate on Super Rugby. Now we just need Wandile Mjekevu to partner him in the midfield and the Sharks will be looking pretty dangerous.

@RL-15: I don’t know if that would work. Kankowski played lock at school and he excelled there but wasn’t known for his rucking ability or for getting down and dirty. He was the same as he is now, better used in the backline with ball in hand. Also, when he applied to sharks academy t was as a lock and they turned him down because he was too short, thats why he ended up as a loosie. Which is ultimately better.

@rangerman-23: Looking at that list I’m surprised you aren’t worried! Mjekevu doesn’t yet have the skills or experience (nor if we hear correctly the contract) to play 13 for sharks. Jordaan and Whitehead have a lot of potential but not enough experience to be a force in the S15. Joubert is WAY past it. And Bosman is just kak.

The problem with the Sharks squad is that if you look at them with no preconceived ideas or expectations, they aren’t too bad. They’re certainly not EMBARRASSING.
In fact, they might even do ok.
However, when you look at them with the the expectation tinted spectacles of possible title contenders, well, then they suddenly start looking fragile in all kinds of areas that didn’t draw much attention before.
The reality is simple: The Sharks have a decent squad, but it is neither balanced enough, nor does it have enough quality depth in most of the crucial positions to make them serious title contenders.
This is not an attempt to compare them to any other SA franchise. Just an honest appraisal of their chances, if you had to decide where to invest a R100 000 bet with the bookies.
Skip the Sharks, and look to put your money on some other team, would be my advice.

this is not news, if the coach doesn’t have a certain player in his plans then it is NOT greedy when the player seeks what he percieves as greener pastures. i don’t even think a sharks reject like ross cronje will be asked to take a pay cut but wandile, with more rugby pedigree must vreet kak…

What rugby pedigree exactly, apart from a moderately impressive showing for the junior Boks and half a handful of decent games for the Lions? I think he has talent and could become a decent player. But all this “pedigree” rubbish is way premature.

I was just watching a re-run of Carel du Plessis’ opening try against the ’84 British visitors. The ball retention and ball skills exhibited by the Bok backs then are far in advance of any current SA backline, provincial and national. It makes me sad
