CUT, UWC off to winning start

CUT downed Wits 25-12 while UWC thrashed Fort Hare 36-13 on the opening day of the Varsity Shield.

Defending champions CUT came back from an early 12-0 deficit to triumph in Bloemfontein over last year’s runners-up Wits as they scored three tries. Captain and flyhalf Inus Kritzinger, scrumhalf Stephen Griesel and reserve prop Danie van der Merwe crossed the chalk for the victors.

Wits were in the game at half-time (trailing 13-12), thanks largely to inside centre Ryan Odendaal’s try, but they couldn’t score any points in the second stanza as CUT impressed on defence and closed off the contest.

Meanwhile, in Alice, UWC wing Cheslyn Robert scored a hat-trick of tries to give his team a 23-point win over hosts Fort Hare.
