Maku blow for Lions
7 Feb 2012
Lions hooker Bandise Maku has sustained a torn pectoral muscle and will be out of action for several months.
The Lions confirmed the news on Tuesday via Twitter. Following surgery this week, Maku will miss a large portion of the Super Rugby season.
The powerful ball-carrier enjoyed a great Currie Cup competition last year, and news of his injury will come as a blow. Lions coach John Mitchell may look to hooker Martin Bezuidenhout, who also had a solid Currie Cup, to fill the void. Former Maties No 2 Callie Visagie will also receive more game time because of Maku’s injury.

Murray.
Maku.
One or two more and Lions will have no effectivedepth to be truly competitive over the course of a very long competition.

If I was John Mitchell I’d be close to packing my bags and running for the hills by now.
With all the kak going on at board level, and the likelihood that the Lions will be liquidated in the near future, plus the 22+1 player size of his S15 squad, the loss of any first choice player at this stage pretty much spells total bloody disaster.
How does he keep his chin up? There is literally no hope for them.

Not really a blow. He imo is a weak link in the whole lineout operation, he has to work on his throwing to become a blow (in future). Also as a ball carrier he tends to lose ball in contact more than normal.
Now it is the time for Bezuidenhout and Visagie to step up, hopefully Mitch didn’t cut Edgar Marutulle (sp) we need a VC cup hooker.

@Tacitus-5:
He’s not running because he knows that from next year he’ll be incorporating a lot of depth from over the Jukskei when the Lions and the Bulls merge to make way for the Chiefs… I mean Kings

@puff-7: which team do you support?cause let me enlighten you, when SARU entrenched the Kings into superrugby they basically said that the last placed franchise (other than the Kings) will drop out.
Now as you know puff there are 6 SA franchises and that is bad news for which ever team finishes last in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Lets paint a picture on what Jurie Roux wanted, automatic relegation!
In 2012 the Bulls end last in the SA conference and sit out in 2013, in comes the Kings.
In 2013 the Stormers finish 4th in the SA conference and sit out in 2014, to be replaced by Bullies.
In 2014 the FS end 4th in the SA conference and make way for the Stormers in 2015.
Get it … the Kings do not get relegated and this is what Jurie Roux is threatening.

How did he injure his shoulder?
I’ve never even seen him take contact.
My great auntie Agatha takes more punishment at her weekly bridge game.

@the artist formerly known as gunther-9:
Maybe cos he’s black he was out drinking and threw himself into a door.
He’s not a Bull of course.
Bulls aren’t that stupid to get injured in off-season.

@RL-8: So even if the Kings end stone last and concede 1000 points they dont get relegated?? Crazy!

@Dawn-11:
what’s your vibe?
why would he throw himself into a door?
seems very strange.
anyway he used to be a bull and we never broke him.

Callie Visagie just needs to get his opportunities. He really is an incredible player. When he played for Maties, their forwards absolutely dominated, but as soon as he left the park it all fell apart. His injury last season is the reason why Maties struggled towards the end of the comp while they thrashed everyone in the beginning when he was playing.
Lions would do well to give him a run. He’s much better than Bezuidenhout and if he develops as he could, much better than Maku too.

A real body blow,,,
I am sure the Lions will recover though
The Bulls did recover after they had unloaded Maku to win two Super Rugby trophies in 2009 & 2010, or didn’t they?

@Hondo-15: Maku was never the starting hooker at the Bulls.
Have your say
