Harris to spearhead Reds

The Reds will start Mike Harris at flyhalf in their first pre-season fixture against the Brumbies on Saturday.

With Quade Cooper out with a serious knee injury picked up at the World Cup last year, coach Ewen McKenzie will test Harris and Ben Lucas as possible flyhalf options. Harris will get the opening opportunity against the Brumbies in Cairns, before Lucas takes over after half-time.

Cooper is expected to be sidelined for the first six weeks of the defending champions’ Super Rugby campaign.

‘We think there’s some exciting stuff that we can play around with tactically and both players offer us something,’ McKenzie told reporters. ‘We want to share that and see what they’ve got.’

Meanwhile, McKenzie will start a second-string side for their first training match of the year, as most of their Wallabies will feature off the bench. Squad skipper James Horwill, wing Digby Ioane and scrumhalf Will Genia are all named among the reserves.
