Sharks mix it up

The Sharks have gone with a blend of youth and experience for their warm-up match against Boland in Durban on Friday.

Pat Lambie starts at flyhalf, where he is expected to play for the majority of the Super Rugby season. He is partnered by Frenchman Frederic Michalak at scrumhalf.

In the forwards, young Dale Chadwick starts at loosehead in Beast Mtawarira’s absence, while Pieter-Steph du Toit, elevated from the Sharks’ junior ranks, slots into a back row of Keegan Daniel and the promising Marcell Coetzee at No 8.

Tim Whitehead, recruited from the Stormers late last year, pairs up with JP Pietersen in midfield. The Sharks have also named an extended bench in the hope of giving game time to most of their squad.

    @wpallday-50:

    I wasn’t talking about goalkicking, I was talking about tactical kicking.

    Pinning the opposition in their own half… that way you very rarely concede tries, especially with a good defense.

    With Heyneke, we’ll be playing a tactical kicking game… meaning Morne boots the ball down all day until we have the ball close to the opposition 22. Things like up-and-unders are not in the past. It will continue.

    Really, it’s smart rugby, and I hope Heyneke picks the right guys to play that game. Morne, or yes, Goosen, are good candidates for the 10 jersey.

    And no, Steyn can’t just take the kicks, because his line-clearing kicks tend to take far too long to get off. He needs a good 3 steps to launch one downfield.

    Okay I hear what you are saying, but Lambie is one of the better tactical kickers in south African rugby, one just has to look at his game against the Crusaders last year, one passage of play between him and carter was a superb example of skilled out of hand kicking.

    I also agree with you about the way the Boks will play under Meyer, and I’m slightly worried.

    I like the look of that back-line but would like Sithole to get a run. Could someone tell me what happened to Mjekevu?? Why won’t anyone give this kid a shot. He seemed to have the worlds potential – great athlete big strong, decent speed and sounded like he had a good head on his shoulders!
