George set for Sevens spectacle
12 Feb 2012
Media reports indicate George will host an IPL-style Sevens tournament in December.
Rapport reports that the tournament, to be hosted a week after the Port Elizabeth leg of the official Sevens series, has already been sanctioned by the South African Rugby Union.
The South Western Districts have confirmed that well-known sports promoter Willem Strauss has bankrolled the project, which will see players earn up to R100 000 for the tournament.
The newspaper indicated that players would be approached prior to the Port Elizabeth tournament then join their respective franchises in George following its conclusion. It is proposed that franchises will be owned by businessmen or organisations.
SWD president Hennie Baartman said: ‘We lost the IRB tournament but not our capacity and hunger [for Sevens]. We have personnel with 10 years experience in hosting Sevens tournaments. Willem’s skill in this regard is well known and we were pleased to get him on board.’

Do they really believe that franchises will release their players from pre season training squads to go into All Black territory and toss a ball around.

Vrede I told you two days ago about the letter that the existing 5 franchises sent to Hoskins, telling him to get stuffed. Well now a famous Afrikaans newspaper is revealing details of that letter.
Wake-up my boy …. the real story was not about the merger rebuff.

All franchises belong to their national bodies and can be cancelled to be replaced with new ones.saru might have the upperhand here if the licenses expires at the end of this super season.
