Jantjies at pivot for Lions

Jantjies at pivot for Lions

Elton Jantjies will start at flyhalf in the Lions’ warm-up match against the Kings in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.

Injury ruled Jantjies out of their earlier friendly against the Stormers in Cape Town. Butch James plays off the wood as cover. Elsewhere there is a start for former Maties hooker Callie Visagie. New Zealander James Kamana will look to impress after an injury-ravaged 2011 season and starts on the wing. Doppies la Grange shifts to outside centre to accommodate Alwyn Hollenbach.

Lions - 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies la Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 James Kamana, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (c), 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Subs: 16 Francois du Toit, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Stephan Greeff, 19 Doppies le Roux, 20 Tian Meyer, 21 Butch James, 22 Lionel Mapoe.

Here’s hoping the Lions klap this BBBEE abomination into King dom come. A half-century sounds about right.

Lions were going to send a depleted squad as the Kings not fielding their best. Now the Lions are sending a full squad to make a statement. Expect 100 point from the Lions, if not more. Don’t mess with a wounded beast… especially if you are a political pawn kissing political bums…!

What was meant to be a friendly pre-season warm up to test combinations and depth has now probably been turned into a brutal and bitter war by the insanely stupid decision to promise the Kings a spot in the S15 without figuring out how to work it. The Lions are going to want to send a very strong message to Hoskins & Co that merit and Kings don’t belong in the same sentence. And the Kings are going to do their best to salvage a little PR from this clash. Expect a full on assault with injuries, yellow cards and plenty of hostility in the stands. Just what you need when you’re about to embark on a long tournament with a skeleton squad.

I expect the Lions to follow a similar pattern to the latter stages of the Currie Cup – push for points in the first 40-50 minutes then defend the lead to get defence practice before a final push in the last 5 minutes.

Unless of course they want to prove a point.

Now lets see if the Kings can earn a place in Super Rugby!!!

@>^..^< katman-6: Well, Cheeky did say the Kings are the rise with their close losses to the Cheetahs and Stormers as proof. LOL

Well the Lions need to beat them by at least 80 points to justify their inclusion in Super Rugby.

The sharks beat Boland by 62, and Boland is at least 18 points better than Kings.

Hoskins should send Cheeky and Kevin an email informing them that this game will double up as a qualifier for next year’s S15. Winner takes part, loser gets his arse in the promotion/relegation queue.

Imagine if the Kings run the Lions close or beat them

@clm-12: Are they going to play in half a SWD half Border jersey?

  • 15.Rage: Reply to this comment

@ 12 clm, correct…this game is to be played in George against a Border/SWD combination, unless it has been moved up to Gauteng for some reason.

    @ 14 Ja-ja,such a jersey would make Luke puke

heheheh well it was announced waaaaaay back that the game against the Lions will be an opportunity to give the SWD players a chance to impress Alan Solomons to see if they will make the Southern Kings’ broader squad. Mitchell initially baulked at the idea of playing a “weakened” team and said he won’t be sending his yster manne to Outeniqua Park, it’s good to see that he’s changed his mind :D

@Rage-15: I think they should just call it the Kings, if they are wearing Southern Kings kit then they are representing the Kings. The same as any other union does when wearing their kit.

If they want to be a combination of this and that they should get another jersey. This just sounds like making excuses to me if the Lions put 50 points past them.

When will we see Luke Watson back on the field. Wow i miss the days he was WP Captain… great guy who stands up for what he believes in and doesnt care what some naive people think.

  • 24.steblooi: Reply to this comment

It is great to stand up for what you believe in. Just a pity Luke the Puke is standing up for a mentality that dates back to the 1940′s – Afrikaans vs English blah blah – he is little more than a brainwashed boy doing his psychotic fathers bidding. I hear he drinks a cup of earl grey tea after games…. what a moron! Lions by 50 at least!

  • 25.steblooi: Reply to this comment

Luke might as well stand up for the Nazi’s… his mentality dates back to the same era!
