CUT, UWC win big

CUT eased to a 34-19 win over Fort Hare while UWC thrashed UKZN 61-10 in the fourth round of the Varsity Shield.

CUT continued their unbeaten start to the tournament with their third successive win. They scored four tries via prop Danie van der Merwe, wing Alec Mhlanga, reserve fullback Charles Hitchcock and lock Shaun McGeer as they thumped the students from Alice in Bloemfontein.

In Bellville, the Impis continued their woeful campaign as UWC ran riot in a 51-point hammering. The hosts crossed the chalk on eight occasions, with wing Cheslyn Roberts scoring a brace. Fullback Ambrose Steyn also kicked well by adding seven conversions.

UWC 61 (37) – Tries: Cheslyn Roberts (2), Warrick Rhoda, Charlton van Jaarsveld, Oswill Mentoor, Denzil Lindoor, Denzil Willemse, JP Kellerman. Conversions: Ambrose Steyn (7).
UKZN 10(5) – Tries: Levi Swartz, Leon Stevens.

    Is there promotion/relegation between the Varsity Cup and Shield? It will be interesting if U-Dubs makes it to the varsity. They will probably switch with NMMU or TUT. Transformation wont be hurt if NMMU gets relegated….there are lots of coloured and black players in the UWC team.
