Edinburgh sign Cheetahs prop

Cheetahs tighthead prop WP Nel has agreed a three-year deal with Scottish club Edinburgh.

Nel, who started his career with WP before securing a senior deal with the Cheetahs in 2009, will leave for Scotland at the end of Super Rugby. The 25-year-old made his breakthrough in the Currie Cup three years ago as he formed part of a formidable front row with loosehead prop Wian du Preez (now at Munster) and hooker Adriaan Strauss. Du Preez and Strauss were selected to tour with the Boks at the end of the year while Nel started for the Barbarians in their 25-18 victory the All Blacks.

‘My experience at the Cheetahs has been fantastic and I can’t thank coach Naka Drotske enough for all that he has done for me but when I got the chance to go to Edinburgh. It was an opportunity to gain new experience and develop my game even further,’ said Nel. ‘To be involved in that set-up and experience northern hemisphere rugby and conditions can only improve my game in two great competitions – the Pro 12 and the European Cup – and I’m certainly looking forward to the challenge.’

This is because the Cheetahs are a low budget team. They went through a massive culling exercise last year as they can only afford to contract 30 players – they rely massivley on the Griquas to prop them up – so to speak.

I’ve just had a look at their 30 man Super squad – they have about 8 Griquas in there and zero locks. Their pack is in for a moering of note! They simply do not have the depth to last.

What makes things worse for them is their pay as you win Toyota sponsorship – the less they win the less they get :) and I though the Lions adminstrators were stupid.

Good luck states you will need it.
