Canes backlash buries Chiefs

The Hurricanes scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to steal a 23-19 win against the Chiefs in a warm-up match on Friday.

The Chiefs led 9-6 at half-time thanks to three penalty goals by Aaron Cruden. The Chiefs added a further seven points after the break through a Brendon Leonard try and a Cruden conversion, and at 16-6 looked to be in control as the game entered the fourth and final quarter.

But the Hurricanes enjoyed a late surge, scoring a try on the hour through Jack Lam. Michael Bent crashed over with six minutes remaining and another successful conversion saw the Hurricanes edging into the lead. A further penalty by Daniel Kirkpatrick put the result beyond doubt.

The Hurricanes will play the Stormers at Newlands next Saturday while the Chiefs will host the Highlanders in Hamilton.

    This is a surprising result… I thought the Canes would be the weakest NZ team this year after losing so many major players. Hard to say how reflective this is without seeing the teams but still, interesting.

    @Tarlo(Tarlo)-1: Yes quite interesting. I think the Chiefs just imploded in the end. Stormers will still wipe the floor with this Hurricanes team.

    @Sasuke(Sasuke)-2: Very surprising result though…

    Think you’re right though, Chiefs pack is very average so I reckon we should stuff em at Boolands. This will surely boost their confidence though.

    Unexpected result, but still really difficult to say whether anything definitive should be taken from a warm-up result – especially when one team seems to just have let a formality slip away.
