No guarantees for Guildford

Crusaders wing Zac Guildford is back from suspension but may only be included on the bench for this week’s match against the Highlanders.

Serving a ban for his boorish behaviour in Rarotanga at the end of 2011, Guildford missed the Crusaders’ pre-season matches and the first official Super Rugby game against the Blues. The preferred starting No 11 of last season, he is now available for selection, although coach Todd Blackadder has said that Guildford will not be guaranteed selection in the starting line-up.

The Crusaders fielded Tom Marshall, Israel Dagg and Sean Maitland in the back three last week, and it could be that Blackadder prefers to stick with a winning combination. The fact that Guildford hasn’t played any competitive rugby since last October means he is also not match fit, and it’s for this reason that he may start his season on the bench.
