Wits snatched a late 20-16 win over CUT while Fort Hare downed UWC 23-21 in the sixth round of the Varsity Shield.
Wits trailed CUT for most parts of the match in Johannesburg, with the defending champions holding a 16-12 advantage at the death. However, loosehead prop Katlego Kgame powered through from a maul to score a late try and secured a big win for the hosts. The result sees Wits top the Varsity Shield log.
In Belville, UWC were humbled with a defeat by Fort Hare. The hosts were in top form as they beat CUT and UKZN in the previous two rounds, but the students from Alice ended their winning streak.
Fort Hare flyhalf Banda Masixole delivered a Man of the Match performance as he scored two tries and kicked two conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 18 points.
