Hougaard to miss Blues game
4 Mar 2012
Francois Hougaard has received a one-week suspension following his dangerous tip tackle on Robert Ebersohn.
Sanzar duty judicial officer Mike Heron accepted a guilty plea from Hougaard for contravening Law 10.4 (j) (Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground while that player’s feet are still off the ground). The scrumhalf was red carded in the 62nd minute of the match at the Free State Stadium.
Hougaard will now miss the Bulls’ game against the Blues at Loftus on Saturday, with Jano Vermaak set to start in the No 9 jersey.

@Transformation(Transformation)-47:
I felt Hougaard was trying to drive through the tackle and did not realize he had lifted him so high thats why he did not let up.
Yes based on the laws a red but too harsh i think still

Indeed I am. Watch the clip. I have done so.

It’s simple.
If a guy lifts your legs into the air, you can either fight to stay upright, or force yourself downward to try and place the ball for the ensuing ruck.
If you choose to do the latter then that should not be your opponent’s fault.

@Tacitus(Deucalion)-52: I don’t think any rugby player (or any human beign) can act in the air in the fashion you described.

willievz: hahaha exactly, that’s what i was saying to Tac earlier…it’s reflex, ven renen ranger swung his body as soon as jdv lifted him past the ‘horizontal’.
tac: the day nonu & mealamu pull what they did to Bod in 05 to francois hougaard or to cj stander & crock him you won’t be as willing to forgo the LAWS. U break the law u cop the ban, klaar

@willievz(willievz)-54: I don’t know Willie, maybe some players can do that. I’m actually surprised that someone hasn’t milked a red card that way.
The current laws do mean it is a red card but the law is stupid. If you do an Undertaker style tombstone piledriver it should be red. Maybe if someone can provide stats as to how many players have been injured in pro-rugby by tip tackles I’ll change my mind.

I so dig john malkovich

@H(H)-59:
Exactly.
Drive a player into the ground – red card, no problem.
Lift him and let him go – what’s the big deal? It’s only a metre or so. If a lock is not supported after his jump at the line out, he gets to fall 2m or more. And they all come out OK.
This game is becoming too soft.

@ H: someone must be crocked for you to believe the manoevre puts players’ careers in jeopardy? Aiight then
4 Mar 2012, 21:14 pm
I agree with the principal of your post, however that’s not what the rules currently say.
Hougaard will be back fine though. It’s a long season so they were going to rest him anyway.

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-66:
I’m not worried about Hougaard’s enforced 1 game rest. Vermaak was probably getting a bit restless sitting on the bench in any case.
It’s the principle that irritates me, as it can happen so easily and spoil any game at any time.
Basically, I am against removing players from the field at any time, for any reason whatsoever. As soon as it becomes 15 against 14, the game is over. Unless one team totally outclasses the other.

@Tacitus(Deucalion)-61:
You are allowed to work up to 2m from the ground WITHOUT a safety harness.
I assume this means it’s ok to the safety department if you free fall from that height
But yes, some milking taking advantage of this law is probably possible. Difficult, but possible in some instances.
When you get your legs taken from you when you’re in the mindset of powering forward drive, it can take you by surprize, and very often it’s very difficult to bend or twist backwards.
The judicial system should be able to make room for some initiative.
Oh well, extra-long bye for Hougie, he can use his rest day to practice his tactical kicking. Also, I’d like to see JJ get a start at 14 some time soon…maybe against the Lions, you know…one of those guaranteed wins..

Also, I don’t see enough people praising Francois Venter’s beautiful passing technique. Don’t you people watch out for these things?
He impressing me with a few opportunities that he got, acceleration, good angles, good hands, smooth ball, aggressive defence. Good man.

Two w-ends, two rounds completed and two diabolical TV decisions made by the 3rd referees in S.A. Bear in mind this is the 3rd ref. in front of a screen who has all the time in the world to get it correct and seemingly without any emotions influencing his decision making.
The situation worsens every season that passes except possibly in the NH.
1st w-e the ‘Canes try not allowed against Stormers at a critical stage after a valiant fight-back by the Canes.
2nd w-e the equally shocking 1st Bulls try against Cheetahs. This one had the hallmarks of a clearly multiple grounding and is easily seen first time by anyone watching.
The front-ranker grounds the ball short of the try-line, realises this and moves it forwards onto the line seconds later. Not satisfied with that and wiith much force and counter-force coming into play over many further seconds he eventually succeeds to roll it over the line after that epic struggle.
At the point of the first grounding there was no forward momentum to carry that ball onto the line. Thus surely a 2nd movement is required.
What can be expected in week 3 and who will lose out and who will benefit from another questionable decision?
4 Mar 2012, 22:14 pm
There is a huge gap in class amongst SA teams, Bulls v Cheetahs a foregone conclusion.

I thought it would be a red the instant I saw it during the game – the landing was really awkward and looked dangerous. Agree there was no malice, the tackle just went on a little longer than Hougaard would’ve liked and he lost control of his man momentarily as he drove upwards. But on initial viewing it looked a lot worse than it was.
Personally, I’m a little disappointed that these new laws make a slight tip and a driven spear the same on-field punishment.
As for the Blues – they’re playing a 12 at 10 and their forwards are in disarray. There’s no platform to build on, no quality ball and in defence they’re missing tackles all over the place. They’ll be glad Hougaard is out since they couldn’t cope with a running scrumhalf at all this weekend, but they’re still shaping up poorly.
4 Mar 2012, 22:42 pm
Tartan: yep, i also knew he was a goner as soon as he dropped him, based on the laws and not how i subjectivel wish rugby should be played.
Did u see those Landers make it 2 wins in a row against the Saders? Jamie josephs handing out smacks to toddy!
4 Mar 2012, 22:49 pm
Yeah, was really glad I bothered getting out of bed for that one. Best game of the weekend, Peyper had a good game in the middle too I thought.
‘Landers look good early doors again, but we’ve yet to see if they’ve any depth – looked good at this stage too last year. Supposedly they’re quite thin in the front 3, which isn’t exactly a great place to be short.

Only ONE week? Way too soft!
5 Mar 2012, 04:26 am
Andries Strauss has been suspended for two weeks after a dangerous tip tackle on Wikus van Heerden at Ellis Park.
Strauss, who accepted a guilty plea, contravened Law 10.4 (j) (Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground while that player’s feet are still off the ground).
As I said at the time, no problem with the 2 weeks as long as they stay consistant…so much for that!
5 Mar 2012, 08:02 am
@TheTackler(TheTackler)-76: Like your tottie.
Rules are rules but there was nothing serious about the whole thing like drilling the guys face into the ground. One week more than enough.
Laat dit n les wees vir die res.
Where is my buddy CAPECRUSADER. What happened to your heroes son. Lekker hard gemoer ne? Arme donner.

@Neil(Neilanate)-70:
i agree, i thought that canes try definately was a try…..
but in the case of the bulls try I would hypothesize that the law is at fault and not the refs. Basically the 3rd ref needs to venture an opinion on anything leading up to the try currently he cannot with the “Try or no try” or “Any reason not to award the try” callings.
Saterdays ruling was technically 100% correct but both refs, except it was a dodgy try for sure. Ironically, i thought the basson atempt a few minutes before that was more of a try.
go figure
