Some of the top Eastern Cape schools will kick off their 2012 season at the Graeme Rugby Day this weekend.
In it’s 15th year, the Graeme Rugby Day will host 14 Eastern Cape schools, including Grey PE, Dale and Queen’s. While the 1st XVs will go head-to-head on the main field (Somerset field), there will also be U15 and U14 matches played on the Marais A and B fields, making it one of the top annual festivals in the region.
Last year, 7 000 fans came out to support the event, and tournament director Nico van der Meulen believes there will be another large turnout this weekend.
‘We normally have an average crowd of 5 000, so having 7 000 supporters show up last year was great to see,’ said Van der Meulen. ‘I believe this year will be another exciting rugby day. Grey PE only show up every second year, so there’s a lot of buzz about their match against Hudson Park. The Dale-Marlow clash will also be a good one, while the feature game will see St Andrew’s take on Framesby.
‘This is also an important weekend as the schools want to start their season off on a strong note. So you can expect all the teams to be hungry for victory and some closely contested matches.’
