Chiefs steal it late

Chiefs steal it late

RYAN VREDE reports on the Chiefs’ 29-22 victory over the Brumbies secured through a Jackson Willison try at the death.

It was by no means convincing but the Chiefs continue their early-season march, giving further fuel to the growing belief that they will be among the teams involved in the business end of the tournament. To progress beyond the play-offs they need to exorcise the demons that sporadically tempt them to abandon a balanced approach in favour of crowd-pleasing panache.

The Chiefs at times resembled the rudderless side they were last year, shifting the ball laterally without any platform to do so effectively. Where purpose had characterised their attacks prior to this match, there was too much hope of individual brilliance, which was in short supply. It was no surprise that both their tries were built on pragmatic phase play.

Credit to the Brumbies for their structure, accuracy and power on defence – hallmarks of a Jake White team. The pressure they were able to exert in this regard contributed significantly to a string of handling errors the Chiefs committed, although a number of their cough-ups were simply schoolboy.

The Brumbies should have been ahead at the break (tied 9-9) having shown greater composure on attack but lacking the killer blow in the red zone. Their phase play and rolling mauls troubled the Chiefs, who lacked the gainline physicality to stifle the former and the organisational skill to quell the latter. Their lack of punch in the tackle compromised their breakdown contest and resulted in them conceding a string of breakdown penalties, which Christian Lealiifano duly banked.

He traded three pointers with Aaron Cruden, the flyhalves kicking five apiece to lock the scores at 15-all going into the final quarter. However, you sensed that the Chiefs had the edge. With their cavalier spirit reigned in slightly they were able to exert pressure in a manner they never were in the first half. They worked through phases and rewarded when Sona Taumalolo drove over from close range. Cruden converted to give his side the lead with seven minutes to play.

But then the Chiefs showed their tactically naive side once more, attempting to run themselves out of their territory instead of punting deep and forcing the Brumbies to take risks. They turned over possession and with four minutes to play Brumbies lock Sam Carter burrowed over the whitewash. Lealiifano held his nerve to level the scores once more from a difficult angle.

But the Chiefs redeemed themselves immediately. They depleted the Brumbies’ defensive line through multiple phases before shifting the ball to Willison for the match-winning score.

Off the topic but do you know what happened to that lock from Crusaders, Isaac Ross?

Been a slowish first half but enjoying the play of Chiefs #9 since last week already,.

The most impressive part of his game is that he doesn’t wave his arms at the ref at each his ruck or takes two steps to his side before he sets his runners away, and he can take a half gap as well.

    Good player.

Just need to be sharper in contact and maintain that defensive effort. At the very least, regardless of outcome, they have exposed several shortcomings in this Chiefs side.

@wpstormerbok(wpstormerbok)-26: They played a clever territorial game in that first half and opened it up in the second. It was a good tactical game. The ONLY reason fans were unhappy was because they wanted a try fest. That’s the Aussies for you, but I see doff Saffers have expanded on this by saying they now play a Saffer game simply because they have a Saffer coach. The Brumbies have played a lot of running rugby bud.

Playing it safe and kicking away every ball you get in your own half is effective territorial play yes, but at the same time overly conservative, the same criticism we’ve had of most SA sides in Super Rugby and even the Boks.

Opponents who can run at them at speed and stretch them over the field will expose them, the only thing that’s let the Chiefs down in this game is their handling.

But credit to the Brumbies as well, so far their defence has been good.

Brave defence by Brumbies all night but in the end their bodies couldn’t handle it anymore if you look at the way they got run over in these last 4 minutes.

Brumbies will lose a lot of close games against the better sides this year, unless of course they too decide to run more often instead of winning field, keeping it tight and defending for most of the game.

ergo… they ****** scrummed straight cos they were beibg watched.

    Highlanders
    Chiefs
    Canes

    Tier 2

And you can call me Doff, clueless and a fool as much as you like.

How did the Brumbies score the try to level the score at the end, wasn’t it through their forwards?

What instruction did the Chiefs coach give to his players that they decided to take the ball up close around the fringes at speed instead of trying to spread it the whole time since the Brumbies were not committing too many players to the rucks and when they did they cleverly counter-rucked and flooded that area, slowing down the ball?

What area of the game was the tightest, the backlines running at each other or the scrums, line-outs and rolling maul?

Didn’t the Brumbies get another score levelling penalty from an impressive rolling maul?

Interesting that only Jayasuriya nd Gangully (on the list) scored more 100′s in ODI’s than in tests.

Jayasuriya in fact scored twice as many hundreds in ODI’s in comparison to tests. He of course revolutionized One Day International batting by becoming the first international player to successfuly attack from the first over in order to take advantage of the early fielding restrictions. It was during the days when we were still used to the “Kepler style” of batting (defend for 40 overs and then attack only if there are wickets in hand)

Well, since this is a Chiefy Thread, and the fact that a certain Robbie Robinson plays for the Chiefs,

    Artist: The Band
Song: Somewhere Down The Crazy River Lyrics

Yeah, I can see it now
The distant red neon shivered in the heat
I was feeling like a stranger in a strange land
You know where people play games with the night
God, it was too hot to sleep
I followed the sound of a jukebox coming from up the levee
All of a sudden I could hear somebody whistling
    Fromright behind me
I turned around and she said
“Why do you always end up down at Nick’s Cafe?”
I said “I don’t know, the wind just kind of pushed me this way.”
    She said “Hang the rich.”

    Catch the blue train
    To places never been before
    Look for me
    Somewhere down the crazy river
    Somewhere down the crazy river
    Catch the blue train
    All the way to Kokomo
    You can find me
    Somewhere down the crazy river
    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Take a picture of this
The fields are empty, abandoned ’59 Chevy
Laying in the back seat listening to Little Willie John
Yea, that’s when time stood still
You know, I think I’m gonna go down to Madam X
And let her read my mind
She said “That Voodoo stuff don’t do nothing for me.”

    I’m a man with a clear destination
    I’m a man with a broad imagination
You fog the mind, you stir the soul
    I can’t find, … no control

    Catch the blue train
    To places never been before
    Look for me
    Somewhere down the crazy river
    Somewhere down the crazy river
    Catch the blue train
    All the way to Kokomo
    You can find me
    Somewhere down the crazy river
    Somewhere down the crazy river

    Wait, did you hear that
Oh this is sure stirring up some ghosts for me
She said “There’s one thing you’ve got to learn
Is not to be afraid of it.”
I said “No, I like it, I like it, it’s good.”
She said “You like it now
But you’ll learn to love it later.”

I been spellbound – falling in trances
I been spellbound – falling in trances
You give me shivers – chills and fever
I been spellbound – somewhere down the crazy river

    Hi Rosso…

    May I correct something…?

That song is by Robbie Robertson – solo – not The Band. Came from his self-titled album in 1987.

An awesome album… also had Broken Arrow on it… (which was covered by Rod Stewart but much better by Robbie)… and a superb song called Showdown at Big Sky… among others…

Daniel Lanois produced and U2 did backing stuff for him…

He also had a song called Shine your Light… which was used for a movie called Ladder49… Great song!

Robbie also did two albums of songs for native americans… which imo opinion are some of the most powerful poignant songs ever written anywhere anytime…

listen to Ghost Dance… gives you goosebumps on your soul…!…

    “you can kill my body…
    you can damn my soul…
for not believing in your god…
    and some world down below.

You don’t stand a chance against my prayer…
You don’t stand a chance against my love!”

The Band were giants and pioneers in rock history…

And Robbie Robertson is one of the deepest thinking people, let alone rock stars, ever…

    An amazing human being…!!

@ufo(ufo)-201: A great guitarist and songwriter. Always enjoyed his stuff although I don’t own any of his albums.

Only one I have of his is Harvest. Not a bad song on the album. It’s a must in anyone’s collection.

@Tartan(Tartan)-222: I have those plus an album he released in the early 90′s called Sleeps with Angels. Very moody with grunting guitar and echoey riffs. Great album for driving.
