Affies, Grey Bloem off to winning starts

Two of South Africa’s schoolboy powerhouses, Affies and Grey Bloem, were victorius in their season openers against Diamantveld and Duineveld respectively.

Affies and Grey Bloem travelled to Kimberley to kick off their 2012 campaigns against two of the Northern Cape’s top teams.

Affies, who were captained by SA Schools prop Pierre Schoeman, managed a 24-10 win against Diamantveld. The boys from Pretoria are expected to be a major threat this season as they have retained most of their 1st XV players from last year.

Grey Bloem, who enter a new era with only three 1st XV players from 2011, downed Duineveld 17-6 after trailing 3-0 at the break. The visitors scored three second half tries to seal the win.

Also in Kimberley, Noord-Kaap (who enjoyed an unbeaten 2011 which included a win over Affies) dominated Sentraal with a 76-0 trashing.

On the east coast, there were some exciting clashes and close results between the big KZN schools. Maritzburg College started their year with a 43-6 drubbing of Northwood. Glenwood edged Michaelhouse 14-13, after leading 11-10 at half-time. Kearsney and Westville Boys’ were also successful in their first outings against George Campbell (17-12) and Hilton College (16-14) respectively.

Other big results saw KES suffer a 21-17 upset against Pretoria Boys’ at home, Waterkloof thumped Florida 42-22, while there were resounding wins for Boland Landbou and Outeniqua.
